Japan's business sentiment plunges
TOKYO (AP) -- Sentiment among Japanese companies worsened to a record low during the January-March period as high materials prices and a strong yen ate into their profits, a government survey showed Monday.
The dismal results add to the storm clouds surrounding the world's second largest economy, with some analysts saying the Bank of Japan might be forced to ease monetary policy as soon as the first half of this year.
The large company business sentiment index -- which measures the percentage of companies saying that the economy will improve minus those saying it will get worse -- was at minus 9.3 in the first quarter. It was at plus 0.5 in the October-December period last year, according to the survey released by the Ministry of Finance and the Cabinet Office. more

I don't make a habit of reading obituaries but there was a memorial published recently about Joseph M. Juran. I knew the name in a hazy way so, curious, I read about him and learned about an inventive innovator. Juran, along with Edward Deming, revolutionized the way businesses are managed. Both worked in Japan after World War II and were major influences on that resurgent economy. Both preached the mantra of improving quality -- Deming in statistical methods, Juran on management methods.Juran argued that producing higher-quality goods might seem costly initially, yet the lowered costs for fewer repairs and charge-backs would result in a market advantage from the reputation for quality; a strategy that would pay off handsomely. Juran's take on the 80/20 principle stated that 80 percent of a company's problems came from 20 percent of the causes. If management would concentrate on the "vital few" rather than the "trivial many," it could improve its products and processes gaining both market share and efficiency. He formulated a theory of quality-control management, the Juran Trilogy, which focused on planning, control and improvement to create a management-led culture of continuous quality improvement. I wish more company managers subscribed to Juarn's theory. It would solve many of their problems and allow them more time, energy and capital to devote to creating new, better products and services while serving more customers. It is evident when dealing with companies that adhere to Juran's theories (even if they had never heard of him) that they are constantly evolving to produce better products and services to continuously satisfy their customers better and constantly working to improve every aspect of their business. They are working on the "vital few." Yet 80 percent of companies are working on the "trivial many." Their strategies often are whims focused on the idea of the moment, vague clichs and fads consisting of expedient short-term "fixes" instead of long-term improvements. They move in an endless cycle from "fix" to "fix," while companies that are able to work on the long-term move in a far more forward-focused, quality direction. Small Businesses Get a Helping Hand
Some of your tax dollars may go to help out small businesses in Eastern Idaho.
The Idaho Small Business Development Center consults selected businesses to start up or grow. If you haven't ever heard of this branch of the government, then you've probably heard of one of the companies they've helped. LawnTech would be probably be under new ownership now if it weren't for valuable perspective gained from the staff of the Idaho Small Business Development Center.
"It was a pretty good eye-opener for us. Areas that we thought we were strong, we weren't so strong, and areas that we wouldn't consider ourselves strong, we were probably better," explains Kim Johnson, who started LawnTech with his brother almost 26 years ago.
Three years ago, with years of success in the lawn care business, Johnson thought his company was ripe and ready to sell off.
"Here, a few years back, our thoughts were, 'we're tired, and we might want to sell our business.' We thought that would have been a good time to consider a sale and that would have been a big mistake, I think. We've grown so much since then."
The consultants with the Idaho Small Business Development center guided Kim's lawn care company to grow by 50 percent in only three years. more
