Postal service is failing businesses

Most Greater Manchester businesses believe the postal service has got worse over the last five years, according to a recent survey.

The British Chambers of Commerce survey revealed that 67% of businesses thought the service less reliable than five years ago. However only 14% of them said they had switched to one of Royal Mail’s competitors.

The survey comes after a report by postal watchdog Postcomm warned the universal delivery service was under threat following the end of Royal Mail’s monopoly.

Carol Hopkins, Local Manager for Rochdale at Greater Manchester Chamber, said: "These results are further evidence that Royal Mail's performance no longer meets the expectations of the business community. Citrix Partners with Ingram Micro to Foster Channel Community

Public restrooms planned for Front Street

City officials and downtown businesses have been clamoring for public restrooms for years and one of the few downtown public restrooms was lost in the Delft Square fire. After the fire, Bode realized the city needed to do better directing people to restrooms -- including one downstairs in the City Hall building -- and then he started working to simply create more restrooms. The idea has cleared the Community Development Committee and the Public Works Committee and will go through the Design Review Board for finalization of the building's look before Bode brings it to the full council for approval. He plans four individual, handicap-accessible restrooms in a stand-alone structure. “It needs to be on the street where people can find it," Bode said of the location. Because of space issues, he said the committee is leaning toward the parking lot across the street from City Hall. more

SiRF swings to $332.6M Q2 loss Silicon Valley / San Jose Business

SiRF Technology Holdings Inc. said Thursday it swung to a second quarter loss of $332.6 million, or $5.41 a share, compared to net income in the same period last year of $2.1 million, or 4 cents a share.

San Jose-based SiRF (NASDAQ:SIRF), a provider of GPS-enabled silicon and premium software location platforms, said revenue ias $63.1 million, a decrease of 10.6 percent from $70.6 million reported in the second quarter of 2007.

The loss included $215.7 million of goodwill impairment, $42.9 million in acquisition-related intangibles impairment and $34.2 million of provision for income taxes, $11.8 million of impairment on a note receivable, $10.3 million in stock-based compensation expense, $6.2 million in amortization of acquisition-related intangible assets, and $100,000 in restructuring charges. more

Breakfast to link Daylesford and Hepburn businesses

HEPBURN Shire's chambers of commerce will come together at an inaugural Daylesford and District Business Group breakfast next month.

Spokesman Peter Fitzgerald said the initiative was aimed at forming strong links between businesses and business groups across the shire.

"Jim Walsh from the Forest Resort will give us an insight into what has gone into pulling this multi-million dollar, golfing, residential, conference and holiday development together," he said.

"Douglas Hunt from Hepburn Shire will be talking about the region's economic development plans, Marg Giles will speak about the Creswick Arts Trail and Tess Brady will talk about Clunes and its success with its Booktown program."

Mr Fitzgerald said the meeting would also include an update on developments in Trentham. more
