Uganda: Israel to Train Ugandans in Business Leadership

Effective this September, the government of Israel will take 25 Ugandan middle class level business executives to pursue specialised training capable of developing them into top level managers.

The move aimed at improving the quality of Uganda's business leaders through skills and knowledge is expected to enable the country to be competitive in the global market at all levels and forms of business.

Pediatrix lowers Q2 guidance South Florida Business Journal

Pediatrix Medical Group said Tuesday it is lowering its second quarter and full-year earnings guidance because of declining neonatal intensive care unit patient volume.

The Sunrise-based owner of neonatal, maternal-fetal and other pediatric subspecialty practices now expects second-quarter earnings of between 77 cents and 80 cents a share, assuming that neonatal unit volume remains at current levels.

Pediatrix (NYSE: PDX) had previously forecast earnings of between 85 cents and 87 cents a share.

The company also said it expects to miss its previously issued full-year guidance of between $3.35 and $3.45 a share. It said it expects to update its guidance for the second half of 2008 when it releases second quarter earnings.

Pediatrix also announced that its board of directors has authorized a share repurchase of up to $100 million. more

Alsoft DiskWarrior saves the Time Machine drive

I am getting asked a lot about the outcome of my apparently bad Buffalo firewire drive that failed back when my MacBook Pro was having intermittent problems. The drive was my Time Machine backup drive and it reached a point where the drive was so bad that it could no longer be mounted by OS X. I tried a lot of recovery methods but nothing could resurrect the drive and since the MacBook Pro is the only device that can use the drive I decided to wait and try to resolve the problem once the MBP was fixed once and for all.

The MacBook had the logic board replaced and so far (knock on wood) has been working well so I decided to give repairing the drive another try. I bought and downloaded a good disk repair utility, Alsoft DiskWarrior, and gave it a try with the drive. The Buffalo drive still couldn't be mounted and the file system could not be repaired normally but I was happy to see that DiskWarrior could access it for repair anyway. DiskWarrior doesn't just try to repair the directory table which is a complicated beast when formatted as a Mac OS Extended drive (journaled), it uses a patent pending process to recreate the directory table by reading the individual file bits of the whole drive. I told it to rebuild the directory and for 25 minutes it scanned the drive and eventually reported that it had discovered quite a few errors. It then began a process of recreating a brand new directory table and once that was done the drive was not only mountable under OS X but quite usable too. The log file said that 25 files were probably no good even though DiskWarrior had repaired them to the best of its ability but the bulk of the Time Machine backup was now OK.

Since I had already rebuilt the MBP without the Time Machine backup I didn't want to take a chance that some of these repaired files would cause problems so I reformatted the drive to a pristine state and then did a full Time Machine backup. So far the drive seems to be working perfectly and my system is now being backed up regularly by Time Machine and I'm pretty happy with the outcome. DiskWarrior is a very good disk repair utility and the coolest part is I found out the company is located about 10 miles from my house. more

Amanda and Chris McDermott own a small business, plastic dollars, that produces and maintains stored cards for retailers.most of the cards they sell are gift cards,such as those available in various restaurant and store.they just started their business two years ago,but this year they hope to sell about four million dollars worth of cards.depending on the arrangement with the business,they may or may not maintain the data base that contains the card owners name and the current value on the card.therefore,although the business is doing well,money is still tight. Plastic dollars employ five people, including Amanda and Chris. two of the employees are full-time, and the other is a part-time worker who is also a college student. the business has two servers and three client computer work stations. they also have three phone lines that allow them to communicate with various retail and restaurant establishments in real time. The company has been "hit" a few times by various programmed threats. They know they should do more but they don't think the cost is worth it. Although they have no disaster recovery plan, they do back up their files every three hours, by encrypting and compressing their data and uploading it to a remote location. My Questions are: 1. I haven't established credit, yet. I'm 19 years old, and I just got myself a job, but I don't start until a couple months from now, so I'm looking for answers ahead of time. I'm also a college student. What's the best way for me to establish credit? Are secured credit cards still popular? I heard that there aren't many businesses accepting these anymore... I am a fourth year student taking up economics. I use a phone primarily for texting. It doesn't make a difference to me if a handset can access the internet or not. A phone's interface matters to me. Hello: So I am a undergraduate student completing my degree in Psychology. I intend to pursue graduate school after my I complete my degree. Anyways, I was thinking of getting some business cards printed up with my personal information such as my email, phone number, and personal website, as well as it saying "Undergraduate" where the occupation/position would be. I want to hand it out to potential thesis supervisors when we meet and others to begin networking a little more. So my question is does this come across as being tacky or trying to hard? Or does this seem professional and appropriate. I guess I am looking for some answers from some professors on how they would perceive this All other advice is also welcome :) more

Voting Question: Business Cards for college networking event, which ones to use?

Hi! My college program is offering business cards for students for their recruitment term. All of these cards look the same and many students have bought them, however the card is very thorough and professional looking. I also have business cards as part of a club that I work with (Ace Financial Services), which has different business cards, but have an email that will be renewed on a term by term basis. Is it unprofessional to write my personal email address at the back of the financial services card? Is it that important to look different? Note: all of this is in preparation for a program recruitment night, which has a big impact on future employment. It is the biggest employment night of the year and I will be competing with about 200 people. Should I just make my own business cards then?This event is tomorrow.... more

Citizens for a No Kill Philadelphia (CNKP) holds lecture series at Drexel School of Law and Hector the Pit Bull (Vic’s former dog) was STAR A panel discussion was held last night at Drexel University's Earle Mack School of Law titled The Importance of Creating a Safe and Humane Society for all People and Animals. It was hosted by Citizens for a No Kill Philadelphia (CNKP) and Drexel's Student Animal Legal Defense Fund. The main point demonstrated by speaker Donald Cleary of the National Canine Research Council was "The dogs called pit bulls are just dogs." The star of the evening was by no doubt, Hector the Pit Bull, a rehabilitated former Michael Vick fighting dog rescued from Bad Newz Kennels by BAD RAP a San Francisco based rescue group and adopted by Clara and Andrew "Roo" Yori. Hector delighted attendees with his gentle nature, loving attitude, and grace under pressure (of public appearances) in spite of his numerous eternal scars from his former life. Certified by Therapy Dogs International, Hector has passed the AKC Canine Good Citizen exam (twice) and the temperament test of the American Temperament Test Society. He carries his own business cards in his vest wherever he goes and is free with giving affection and pets with any human nearby. His job is being a therapy dog and an ambassador for the pit bull breed. Hector has passed 10 tests to become a certified therapy dog. And no, Vick did not stop by to see how Hector is doing. Cleary went on to point out that the words pit bull and dog are not used interchangeably; arguing they should be he clarified Dr. Randall Lockwood's position that dogs cannot be characterized without humans. He also defined the difference between family dogs and resident dogs. The former being a companion animal who is treated as part of a family, living indoors, cared for and loved with the latter being dogs used for guarding or protection, often chained and kept outside with little, if any human interaction. Cleary also noted negative impressions about pit bulls have been perpetuated by the media and used the examples of two dog bite incidents. One, a fatal dog bite of a six year old child by a non pit bull dog received only two published articles nationwide while a story about a minor pit bull bite incident received thousands of articles written about it. All speakers were in agreement it is important to bring to the public's attention the positive stories about pit bulls, like Hector's. Leigh Siegfried, certified pet dog trainer and owner of Opportunity Barks, a Jenkintown based company, spoke about canine aggression and the fact it is situational. An example mentioned was highlighted in a picture shown of a pit bull chained to her whelping crate with an oversized sized chain and her nursing pups. Another was allowing a child (or adult) to try to engage an emaciated dog in interaction; this can be a recipe for disaster because a starving dog is much more likely to bite than want to play. She stressed it is people that need to control dogs citing the importance of training and the ongoing impact of a loving owner upon a dog. Opportunity Barks also holds classes in Philadelphia. Next was Elise Van Kavage, Esq., Senior Legislative Attorney with Best Friends Animal Society in Kanab, Utah. VanKavage explained breed specific legislation (BSL) is in fact discrimination and called for legislation outlawing the practice. Pennsylvania is one of only two states that does outlaw BSL practice, thereby preventing townships and other local governments from enacting BSL. She dispelled the myth of a dog bite epidemic and quoted statistics showing a fourfold decrease in reported dog bites from the 1970's to present time. Moderator Stacy Coleman of the Animal Farm Foundation in New York stressed the importance of communities coming together to be the voice of the voiceless and reminded everyone to be respectful of each other's opinions and points of view when dealing with BSL. CNKP's Garrett Elwood introduced some local animal advocates including Dierdre Franklin of Pinups for Pitbulls, Allison Lamond from PAWS, Christina Voigt from ACCT, Claire Tillman, Humane Education Coordinator at CNKP and Alanna Burke from Saving Temple's Cats. Many attendees were able to pose for photos with Hector and Roo Yori. Questions from attendees were answered and participation was interactive. It was clear that those in attendance were dedicated animal advocates who want to make a difference in Philadelphia. But the U.S. can collect debts to federal agencies by "offsetting," or withholding Social Security and disability payments. The Treasury currently withholds benefits of 3.1 million Social Security recipients to recover defaulted student–, farm– and small–business loans, unpaid income taxes, amounts veterans owe for health care, and other debts to the government. Previously, the U.S. hasn't been able to withhold Social Security payments to recover most debts delinquent for more than ten years. But a provision in the 2008 Farm Bill lifted the ten–year statute of limitations on the government's ability to withhold Social Security benefits in collecting debts other than student loans—for which the statute of limitations was lifted in 1997—and income taxes, where the limit remains 10 years.oh no oh no!!! Resolved Question: Can I sue partner for misappropriation?

I am a web developer and full time student that traded one of my assets (a profitable website) for a 30% stake in a small business that sells a proprietary product in the United States. The situation is quite simple that I'm facing. My partner, who owns the lionshare (70%) of the company, decided we should sell the website since we had a good buyer (this is true). So we sold the website for $xxx,xxx.00, much higher than I anticipated. Now that we have a huge influx of cash flow after selling an asset, we have to make up for the lost revenue. However, my partner has been increasingly "frivolous" of his spending. I have confirmed my suspicions that he is using corporate funds for at least SOME of his personal pleasure. For example, for my 21st birthday he justified using the corporate credit card for our "night out" together. This is ok to me. However, I think that my partner has broken his limits as partner by, over a long period of time, using corporate funds to finance his lifestyle. As you may expect, this does not sit well with me. I have strong suspicions that he is using the money from the asset sale, and now he is spending of the cash on himself. I don't know if he THINKS i think it's ok. The website was something I worked hard on for three years of my life, so I'm obviously going to be more attached to the cash than him. But I am only 21 years old, and he is 33. So I'm pretty sure something is going on here. Bottom line, can I sue him for misappropriating funds? I don't want to talk to a lawyer yet because I would hate to make our business go sour if it is not true. Any advice and/or suggestions is very appreciated.We are an LLC corporation doing business in Illinois. Bear with me, this is a bit lengthy. I am female, nearly 40 with family, especially 76 year old father coaxing me to pursue a college degree to land "secure employment" with benefits. Let me shed a little light with regards to my particular situation. I reluctantly graduated high school in '88 *wishing I'd repeated that year citing personal reasons* and, with the persistence of both my parents, began that fall in community college, randomly choosing a major to 1) get my parents off of my back and 2) declare a major just for the sake of declaring a major. My grandfather put away money since the time I was a baby in the stock market for my college, but I used it to fulfill transportation, living expenses and a trade school instead *I had always wanted to be a barber -- since the age of five* This, not surprisingly, was an unacceptable aspiration and, several years later, continued to be coaxed to finish a four-year-degree. This time, not only by my grandfather, but also my father and my younger brother and his wife. To make an insanely long story short, I spent those 20+ years traveling, barbering *for 15 years total*, working in various administrative positions in various industries and had a blast, along the way, doing so. There's one drawback: I have an extremely tiny retirement *my fault*, no benefits other than health insurance through my ex *not that I consider THAT a benefit -- more so a necessity* and some of the best income produced of any field I worked in in the barbering industry, $6000/mo, to be exact. Not too shabby. Still, the barber *out of work, currently* that I am, and the part-time entrepreneur *in another field* that I've become, my family still hounds me about that four-year college degree. Now, I am no dummy. I can do math *citing reasons to be diswayed by bloated interest rates for student loans* and I know my personality. The biggest problem with regards to attending college or, shall I say, the biggest problemS with regards to attending college right now *for my personal situation* are the following: -- I cannot sit still through classes, much less sit still through four full years, more if I need to go part time. -- There's not one major in college that I care to pursue. Not ONE. -- Not that I have anything against them, nor do I realize that all fall within this category, but I don't want a white collar position. No offense to white collar workers. My whole family is white collar. I am the only one who isn't. -- I can do math. I am not stupid. I know what I would need to repay for student loans after private, public or community colleges. I shudder with the thought of even having a debt of $5000. I don't have credit card debt. I don't own a credit card *my wisdom*. I have marginal medical debt *thank you, knee surgeries and asthma issues!*, but that only totals an amount in the ball park of $2000 -- manageable, comparitively speaking. I don't wish to repay loans once I hit the age when I begin drawing social security. I don't qualify for a grant -- still *legally* married, and I don't qualify for academic scholarships, grades aren't good enough, thanks to my high course withdrawal rate and F's for failing to withdraw courses once I unofficially dropped them back in the late 80's. -- I want to own a business when the opportunity arises and don't see it as a possibility by taking out student loans. There's no such thing as good debt/bad debt. It's ALL debt and I'd rather be debt free once the time permits to apply for a small business loan. So, there you have it. My life in a fairly sizeable nutshell. Question is this: How do I effectively explain to my family, once and for all, that I am NOT college-bound and that I have other, more important, more attractive aspirations? My mom always criticises me. I personally think I do well in school and sports but she ALWAYS reminds me that I haven't done well in a subject, or I didn't get an A in something. She definately wasn't a bad student, but it's not like she was the TOP student. She always manages to crush my newly built confidence (I was never confident in anything) every time I bring home my report card. She has a thing against my social life. It's not like I go out as often as other girls in my grade do, but when I do go out she always rants about how she doesn't approve. I go to one of the best private schools in my country and there are many rich business family's kids. But I'm not as rich as they are and my friends aren't either. It turns out that my bro's friends are all the rich kids, and he goes out with them almost every weekend whne possible. Even if he's busy she'd make him go for an hour or so to their mansion. BUT when I want to go out it becomes a huuge ordeal, and I hardly go out with friends to socialise! She tells me that I need to stay at home and STUDY for the subjects that I didn't get an A in. That's perfectly normal, but the thing is she thinks that having to study means THE WHOLE DAY and I shouldn't have any time left to go out or check out my FaceBook page or whatever. For example, today I asked if I can go out for a movie (the cinema is just 10 minutes from home, the movie is less than 2hrs). JUST the movie, no dinner, no fooling around...I'll come straight home. She then started that idiotic ritual of hers, where she reminds me that my grades weren't so good (i.e. I got all A's except for 3 subjects) and that I need to study much harder. Yes, I need to study more but that doesn't mean I can't go out. And I'm on a 1 week holiday right now, does she expect me to stay home all week and do nothing? If I didn't go to the movie, it doesn't mean I'd be spending that two hours studying. I'd probably be PRETENDING to study (I'm not the type of person who can sit for hours and hours studying. I've got a limit where I say "Enough!" and can't study after that) by starting at my lovely wall the whole time. So what difference does it make? I can go out and have some fun instead of slowly rotting my brain at home! I am SO sick of her expectations and her control-freak attitude. I'm still 16 so I can't live on my own or anything. welllll, being young and naive I sort've got myself into a little mess with credit cards. I owe about 30k in credit card debt and a bank loan + 5k in student loans. Well, I'm having hard times, perfect credit for 12 years until I lost my job at the post office. I was working thru temp 1 day a week, now I'm working minimum wage and haven't paid on any of 5 cards in 3 months. I explained the situation to the creditors and told them to please stop calling me so much, I recieved 20 calls in a day from the one company! So my car blows up too.. I did have the ball together, was starting my own business,, now everything fell apart, car blows up, gal left w/ kid, living in hell,,, please help my broke asz.. has anyone used Greenpath debt management? Chase sent me there way, they said they will get the cards down to 2%, consolidated, and paid off in 59 months. I don't care about my credit so much, I just want get my life together again.. OK, here is the deal. I was studying PhD genetics and had full scholarship for that, they were even paying my living expenses, $1000 a month. I was a top straight A student and submitted the best project proposal. But for the following reasons I decided to leave the PhD after 1 year of studying it and work my own business, so I registered a company online, prepared all the paperwork, business cards, bought a domain and I am 100% confident that with hard work it is gonna make me wealthy. And I prefer money over status. I was enjoying the studying part of PhD but I can't stand another 6 years of a poor student life and then a maximum $60-$70 K salary of working in the lab. I see myself more a business person than a scientist. But my father is so angry with me, he wants to cut off all the contacts. He wanted me to get the PhD so much that he can't even think that I did quit it. I feel guilty that I disappointed my father, but at the same time, I really want to change my financial life. I am 31, have married a jerk for 4 years and have a baby who is 2.5. In order to divorce my husband and provide for my baby and be free from his abuse, I had to make that decision now. But my father thinks that the only way I won't starve in this economy is to get the PhD. He is very tough headed and I can't even explain to him why I made that choice. What do you think? Plus. my parents are both involved in the education business. my dad is an elementary school principal and my mom is an elementary school guidance counselor. i am a freshmen in high school and i just got my report card for my 2nd marking period. my grades/comments are as followed: concert band-92, history-75 (work inconsistent is the comment), honors lit and comp- 67 (performs poorly on tests is the comment.) but..with the gpa, they add 10 points if it's an honors class, so that 67 is really a 77. science-77. gym-94, choir-100, french-75 (always cooperative is the comment), and math 90. and, i have missed 5 days this marking period. also, we got our mid-term grades. history-74, lit-61, (71, cause it's honors), french-58, and math-79. i already showed my mom my report card and she said i should work harder and told me to stay for extra help. in middle school, i was an a/b student..so this is not normal for me. i am very stressed..and now sick because of all this stress. i am scared for how my dad will react. This brings to light the dodgy business colleges which provide student visas which allow back door entry into Australia, an immigration loophole which is now closing due to the obvious ruse. Resolved Question: How to get young teen to stop antagonizing me?

I teach karate lessons and have a young teenager in the class (14). I have seen this girl do amazing things over several years. I have known her since she was 5, Though she just tortures me. I have proven countless times that I will stand up for her and protect her when I can. I would say that our relationship is more than just student/ teacher (nothing romantic) I am very much a mentor figure. Last night she tells me that some guy at the mall told her she could be a model and wants her to come to his house to take her picture, said he didn't have a business card with him but said she was positive he was legit. Warning bells and red sirens started blaring. she left me to try an explain why that is a HORRIBLE idea. I mean I was so worried I called up the girl's parents to tell them what she was planning to see if they knew or if I could talk them into going with her. Her parents apologized saying this was all just a big joke, how the girl knew this is how I would react and thought it would be funny. I felt positively stupid. Here I am caring so much wanting to see this girl safe and happy and she is just playing with my feelings. I can take a joke, but I do not find this funny one bit. But this is not the first time she has done this to me. I am getting up there in age and I swear she will give her a heart attack. I am seriously considering making her write me an essay on "why it is unacceptable to make others think you are in danger for your own amusment." Would that be too much?
