Business leaders slow to adopt Web 2.0

Another 22.4% are "interested in these tools but we haven't figured out how to apply them to our business." Twenty percent haven't yet seen the need for Web 2.0 at their companies, and 11.9% said they're unfamiliar with the tools. "That's a relatively even distribution among those familiar with Web 2.0 tools. But it is interesting that less than 50% of businesses are using them now, despite all the rhetoric about these services. The other 22.4% who are interested would expand current usage by half again. These are relatively cheap media forms. Why hasn't business adopted them more fully? It would appear that marketers of Web 2.0 platforms and services haven't done as good a job as they might of explaining what they have to offer. Voting Question: Web Development Question?

I am trying to start a small business website. It's gonna work on subscription based. I used to do some programming (a long long time ago...), but most likely I am going to hire somebody to do this. Just need someone fresh in the field to give me some general outlines: 1. What does it take to program a secure part of the site that requires credit card payment? Web hosts like Yahoo! can set up the site to accept PayPal payment. But that would be more applicable to selling product. I will be selling content (nope, it ain't porn, although the structure will be very similar). 2. Where could I find a good programmer to do something like this? 3. What is the going rate for web programmer these days and how does the contract usually work?  more

Voting Question: What is the best shopping cart solution?

I run a start up web design business and up until now, I haven't been designing any sites that require an e-commerce component. A new client that has signed up has requested us to build an online store for him and I need to choose a method that will allow him to maintain his own online store after we sell him the web site design. He's not very computer savvy and I need to keep it simple for him. I don't want to get sucked into constantly updating his site every time he adds a new item. I also need to make sure that the shopping cart option we provide will be a secure service and were he will have the ability to authorize credit cards instantly and integrate with shipping carriers. I looked into 3D cart but are there any other (possible better) options out there?  more

Resolved Question: Help Me with This Tough Choice.?

I have been working for the same company for 15 years now. I am very well respected, considered the best at my position, and am scheduled to interview soon for a promotion. The catch is, I have 2 felonies from before I even started working there- credit card fraud, and uttering false documents. Currently, I am in a Union position. The promotion means leaving the Union. I would hate for them to find out later, only to get fired. I am in the retail business, with a company that has 180 stores in 4 states. It wouldn't even look right from an outside perspective that this company have a felon running one of their stores. I'm thinking of just declining the interview. I know the offenses were from 15 + years ago, but I think it will matter to them. This company has changed hands twice since I started with them. I've worked too long and too hard to lose my house and destroy my marriage, not to mention probably have a hard time finding another job, and not making what I'm making now either. I know I did the crime, fortunately, there was no jail time, just restitution and community service. I live pretty comfortably and have a secure job, and am well- respected. Perfect credit now, I did file bancruptcy in '94 With the internet nowadays, it's too easy to pry into anothers' life. I looked myself up on the states free court case board, and there I was........ FREE, didn't pay a cent. Didn't have to walk into the courthouse. Just for kicks, I looked up some people at work, and saw all the info from their divorces and bancruptcies, how much they had to pay alimony and such. It was sickening. I always thought in the back of my mind, that short of murder, a background screening company would go back 10-12 years at the most, but I don't even see why they would need one of the companies if they can go right to the state. At the time I was hired, I hadn't been convicted yet, so I didn't disclose that info. I think I'm going to play it safe, and keep what I have. I was thinking of telling them in the interview my reasons for not moving forward just to see what they say, but either way, they are going to be let down, and I don't know what good it will do for them to know my business. I guess when all this happened (when I was 21) I was in debt up to my neck, got fired from my job, (had a motorcycle accident, missed too much time), and took risks that didn't pay out. It really has shaped who I am, and I have been clean ever since. I was so disgusted with myself after this all went down 15 yrs ago, that I soon after had a vaesectomy, thinking I couldn't possibly be a good role model. 15 years later, I'm disgusted with myself all over again.  more

I'm looking to get a secured inventory loan. I'd like to find a funding source of about 50K that is secured by my inventory to remove my personal assets/financing from the equation. It states the company as medium risk. The only tradelines the company has are business credit cards that are secured personally by my partner and I. Voting Question: Someone has used a fake credit card to buy an item at the company I work for, who foots the bill?

It's a small company with an internet site set up for secure payments. The payment went through all right, passing the checks, but now the bank has come back to say that the delivery address and that of the payee aren't matching, so the payment has been made on a cloned card. The bank claim the company must pay the money, so they're going to lose out on the goods and the payment. Is this correct? I thought the bank had things in place to protect the business in this case, but I'm not sure what they are. My boss feels there's nothing he can do, but I've got him to check with the police who say it's the bank that should foot the bill. Can anyone help, or point me where to find out more? Thanks! Details added: the first instance is about £1500, the second (today) £129. Thanks for answering so fast! My boss is pretty down about this as you can imagine.  more

Right now I am in high school, but after this year I will be in the Air Force. As an E-3 I will be making around 19k (before taxes, etc.). If I can spare maybe $500 a month (might not be that much, depends where I will be stationed) should I buy some stocks and bonds, or just find a more secure investment while I am in the military? Since I WILL be away from home, I am not sure how often I can update and check how my stocks are doing. After I get out of the military I plan to make buying and selling stocks my career, and maybe own a couple businesses. I am not like most teenagers and my eyes are open to world events, my future, family, children, taxes, credit cards, most everything that a majority of teenagers shut out.  more

Resolved Question: How do I seek out and obtain business partners?

I'm looking to open a cafe and have started putting together all of the details. I need more information, like where to find and how to compare rates on food distributors, advertising, business startup loans, etc. Keep in mind I have NO credit and for whatever reason can not GET a line of secured credit through anyone, banks, credit unions, online cards. I'm a "foodie" so I would like to find quality products and am perfectly creative in the marketing department, if only I knew what methods of advertising have been proven successful for others.  more

Resolved Question: Should I give up on my dreams? Is it time to pack up and get serious? ?

I've wanted to work in the film industry since I was little. I love movies, and I loved escaping into them as a little girl with a semi-harsh childhood. I grew up in New Zealand, but have ended up here in LA - and yes, I work in the film industry. What I want to be is a writer, but that's a long and winding path. I'm working on it. I've been writing as much as I can, and never quite giving up hope. I work for a production company here in LA, and I like the people I work with (for the most part), but although I'm a fairly integral part of the office, I don't see my bosses giving me the real money and position any time soon. And for that matter, I'm not sure I'd want to be a producer/executive in Hollywood. It's so full of BS and I'm a terrible networker. I do still want to be a writer, and I do still write. They did give me a kind of token title change and extra responsibilities lately, but that was only because they realized I was actually going to leave if they didn't do anything. They like me. I know how to keep my mouth shut and do my work well. I have a metric shit ton of student loans that eat up most of my salary. I earn about $45k per year, plus overtime. But since the WGA strike I really haven't had much overtime to earn. $750/mth goes to my student loans. $610 goes to rent. I have $4k in credit card debt that I try to pay down (i put $600/mth on that bitch) but I always end up having to put shit on it (like my car (an 87 honda civic) needed new brakes and a bunch of stuff and that was $450) and so I never manage to get it down very far. Also, I'm not perfect and sometimes I put stuff on the card I really don't need... but never big stuff. Anyway. I've been in LA for three years. Two years spent at this job, and it's is basically going nowhere. Who knows if I'll ever have the career I want. I'm a female, nearing 30 (just over a year away), in a youth/looks obsessed city, and I don't want to be answering someone else's phones when that birthday rolls along. I just broke up with my live-in boyfriend and I have to search for a new place to live, and because of my loans, I have no savings to pay for a security deposit on a new place. I might have to end up living in my car, or sleeping at work providing no one notices. So my question is: Is it time to just pack up and go home? I know I can write from anywhere anyway, but conventional wisdom says if you want to succeed in the movie biz, you have to live in LA. Or should I forget the dream too? I have British Citizenship and could go live with my dad (I didn't grow up with him) who lives about an hour and a half south of London by train. I could commute (with a 12 month season pass it works out to about 14 pounds/day) to London and try and work there - god knows what I'll do, but hopefully something where I'm a little more autonomous. London is infinitely more interesting to me than LA. I have a B.A. from an American University (not a prestigious one) in Film. Yeah. I know. I suck. I also have completed one year of a Bachelor of Business Science from Massey University in NZ by correspondence. I could potentially finish that in two years. Should I do it, move to the UK? Will I be making a mistake career wise if I leave LA? Will I be likely to earn enough to be in an equal or better financial position than I am now? (note, the majority of my student loans are in NZ$ now) Does it matter? Am I really about to pass my use by date when I turn 30? What hope is there for me for a secure future and a family and a real career if I don't have it sorted by then? Should I just say fuck it all and go back to NZ and find a nice dairy farmer in the Bay of Plenty to settle down with?  more

Resolved Question: $$$TURN $6 INTO 24600?

As Seen On OPRAH & 20/20 - TURN $6 into $24600 Earn money using PAYPAL as seen on Oprah & 20/20 THE PAYPAL 6 DOLLAR MONEY-MAKING METHOD AS SEEN ON OPRAH EARN HUGE $$$$$$$$ all you need is: 1) An email address 2) A PayPal account 3) $6.00 THIS IS A 2007, CURRENT EMAIL LIST Ever since the internet became popular, the word "scam" has become a daily term. I have never once tried any money making "system" outside of this because of that very reason. However, after reading reports on the validity and reputation of this money making system (seen on Oprah, CNN, and other media forums) I decided to give this one a shot... Especially since the so called "risk" is only $6.00. I mean, for the chance, what a joke right? Anyway, only hours after implementing this exact system I about fell out of my chair as money ACTUALLY started rolling in. I couldn't believe it and for that reason, I wrote this intro and became a believer in this system. WHAT IS IT? The idea is that of a system that takes advantage of the power of compounding. And in a big way, let me tell you. First and foremost understand that there are countless spin-offs of this system that try to make a "quick buck" off of people. Long lists, the 5 & 10 dollar trees, the birthday systems, etc... Those spin-offs do make money because of the ease of implementation of this idea, but they do NOT use the compounding advantage. This system is THE legit and profitable one. Here is how it works... There is a list of 6 email addresses (you'll see it as you read further). Each of these people has already taken part in this system. When someone new comes along (such as yourself) he/she removes #1 off of the list, moves the other five email addresses up one position (i.e. #6 goes to #5, #5 to #4, etc.), and places their PayPal email address in the #6 position. This process is what develops the power of compounding. The bottom line is this... Honesty and Integrity creates Profitability. Following this EXACT process is what creates the money, and that is why this system has been raved about in the media. Altering the system creates weak results. The legality of this system comes from the idea that you are of course creating a mailing list, and a "service" is being provided (more on that later.) Now on to how your $6.00 creates BIG money... INSTRUCTIONS: STEP 1: The first thing to do is highlight and SAVE this entire post in word or notepad on your computer so you can come back to it later. After that, if you are not already a PayPal user you need to go to the PayPal website at https://www.paypal.com/au/mrb/pal=CW4RHQW7BQJKC and SIGN UP. If you want to be able to receive credit card payments from other people then you will need to sign up for a PREMIER or BUSINESS account (not just a PERSONAL account). This is highly recommended to allow others easy payment options. In order to place the initial $6 into your account, you will have to verify your bank account with PAYPAL (which may take a few days). PAYPAL is 100% secure and is used by millions of people worldwide. STEP 2: Here is where the action occurs. The first thing to do is to send a $1.00 payment to each of the 6 email addresses on the current list from your PayPal account. To do this quickly and successfully, follow these simple steps: 1. Login to PayPal and click on the "Send Money" tab near the top of the screen 2. In the "Recipient's Email" field enter the email address 3. In the "Amount" field enter "1" (This is your $1.00 payment) 4. In the "Category" field select "Service" (Keeping it legal) 5. In the "Subject" field type "EMAIL LIST", and in the "NOTE" field enter "PLEASE PUT ME ON YOUR EMAIL LIST". By doing this, you are creating a service and maintaining the legality of the system by "paying" for the service. 6. Finally, click on the "Continue" button to complete the payment. Repeat these steps for each of the 6 email addresses. That's it! By sending the $1.00 payment to each address, you are implementing the compounding POWER of the system. You will reap what you sow! Here is the current e-mail list: ************************************************* The email list: 1) 2)veemartinez@gmail.com 3)corina@bigpond.net.au 4)apriladelaide@yahoo.com 5)haneefgroup@yahoo.com 6)oliviapinkney@yahoo.com ************************************************ STEP 2: Now take the #1 email off of the list that you see above (from your saved file), move the other addresses up (6 becomes 5, 5 becomes 4, etc.) and add YOUR email address (the one used for your PayPal account) as number 6 on the list. This is the only part of the document that should be changed. ** Make sure your email address is the one you have registered with PayPal ** STEP 3: Post your amended article to at least 200 newsgroups or message boards.  more

Resolved Question: How do I get over this anger with my husband who has ruined us financially????

My husband has ruined us financially. He went into a business deal that I suggested he not. He obviously did not take my advice. When he did this, I asked him to at least secure some things for us. He did not- he put everything we had on the line. The business failed leaving us with no money, no home. Additionally, he has significantly affected the credit and finances of my extended family by not being able to follow through with what he promised them. I understand that it was their ultimate decision, but I feel badly because my husband can be very convincing. He got me to take 100m on credit cards which we cannot now pay. I have always been a very stable and successful person financially. He has been irresponsible in the distant past but had been stable for 10 years or so. How do I get over this anger? Has anyone else experienced anything similar and how did your marriage survive? BTW, we have little children who love their daddy. Otherwise, I'd be gone. Since I can't, I need help making this work and I first need to get over this anger.  more

Resolved Question: Social security number and theft?

Is there a way to find out if someone is using your SSN for employment? My husband works at a resteraunt in the kitchen and knows for a fact that there are some illegal people working there. The managers knows these people aren't legal. Which, great. Whatever. It's their place of business. That's not my concern. We were discussing that people's social security numbers must get stolen and may get sold so that people can "verify" their legalization status so they can get a job. I am assuming his coworkers filled out applications and put a "social security number" on their apps. I was just wondering if there is a way to find out if someone is using or has used your SSN for something other than applying for credit cards, etc? I haven't had any issues, but I honestly wouldn't appreciate my number being used unlawfully. We all deserve to have our numbers secure, which we know they are not.  more

Resolved Question: I'm a college student who has no credit and has never had a job, what is the best way to get good credit?

Let me tell you what I'm planning on doing for my first business venture. I live in a college town where subpar housing is rented out for crazy prices. What I want to do is to start purchasing some of these properties while the market is down, and rent them out to college kids for as much I pay monthly on the mortgage. The problem is, I have no money to use as a down payment and no credit to secure a loan. I could always have my dad co-sign for me, but I would rather undertake this venture on my own. So I figure I'll have to either fully finance any properties and be hit with PMI, or get seperate loans. Even then, I still have no way of getting a loan. So my question is, what are the best ways to start off my credit history on a positive note so I can be approved for a loan? Getting a credit card and paying payments on time? What else? And even if I do eventually make my credit good, will I be able to get a loan if I do not have a job (since I'll be relying on renters to cash flow)? I am a full time student and I am NOT looking for a student loan for school. My father pays for my education, thank god.  more

Resolved Question: Small business credit cards that do not require owner's social security number?

I am a small business owner trying to establish credit. I've been in business for 2 years, incorporated for 4 months. I want to keep my personal credit completely separate so I refuse to sign up for credit cards using my social security number. I only want credit attached to my tax id number. So far a Staples vendor credit card for $750 is all I have been able to secure. Can you make other suggestions for business credit cards that do not require my social security number? I am interested in any type of vendor. Thanks so much. I am incorporated. I do have a business bank account separate from my own. It is possible to get store credit cards. just so your aware, heres my situation in life : and how will i accomplish my goals and dreams at such a late stage in life at many disadvantages ? the dreams of leaving the uk, (emigrating ) to a hot climate, attaining a good paying computer job...finding a loving wife...attaining a secure happy life...my own home ? how will i ? ive been out on some errands today, to the bank, to see about getting a credit card & then to the hospital concerning the cracked skin on my penis head ( dermatology ). i notice people outside happily going about their business, with a purpous....friends together.....couples.....business associates.....i feel left out.....alone in the world....on a solitary mission to salvage a life for myself.. people carry on without me oblivious to my struggles through life...oblivious to my presence.....i feel on the fringes...left out of society....like everyones miles ahead of me in life......everyones happy...i notice big grins. this makes me feel angry, bitter and isolated. plus heres my situation in general : i feel alienated and singled out in life.....like on my own like no ones really suffered or missed out in life as much as me... im 30 now, waiting for psychotherpy, suffer with borderline personality disorder and ptsd......im building my life up from scratch..virtually.. ive missed out big time.....never formed any relationships ever......always suffered extreme low self esteem..........never been employed......never gained any qualifications.. i live alone in a one bedroom flat on disability.....ive been extremely lonely and vulnerable all my life...have a long mental health record...acriminal record going back 8 year.. suffered severe abuse mentally and physically throoughout my life...bullying etc.. have no social support network plus never had one either.. i feel so angry and bitter im sorry.......because who has had it as bad as me to me degree ? i feel so alone, singled out....perceieved by society as a sad loner who nobody wants to know.. everybody else to me looks happy like their out living their lives being contented.. i feel like nobodies had it as bad as me or have missed out to my extent... i want to overcome these feelings but how do i when ive had it so bad ? i dont want to be known as this loner sad guy who had it worse than everybody else.....whos suffered more.. and yet i worry thats how people see me sometimes.. * before i was watching italy vs france in the football.....and it showed you a snapshot of some blonde girl in the italian fan crowd.. she looked about 22, she had a huge wide ridiculous grin watching her team winning, celebrating.. a huge wide grin. watching that made me feel really angry, i clenched my teeth really tight. everything i have to cope with in life and there is someone carefreely enjoying her life oblivious to the depth of my struggles.. why do i feel like that and how can i stop it ?  more

Resolved Question: Are we doing the right thing?

My hubby is 57 & saves $20,500 + employee contribution in his company's 401k per yr. I am 40 & save $1333 per month in an investment account &I also contribute a portion of that to my SEP. We also put away approximately $15k-20K a year in another investment account. We have a financial advisor who oversees our accounts. My husband will have a company pension of about 45% of his ending income. We have no bills except for my husband's early retirement car (BMW 335i cvrtbl) which is financed at 4.20% for 24 months and we owe 20 more payments. My question is, are we doing the right thing? The stock market is horrible and it's hard to keep sending in money to our investment accounts. We have a reg. savings acct for emergencies. His job is very secure (Oil Drilling Company) and I'm self employed & thanks to Katrina my business is steady..Can anyone suggest anything else?Life/health insurance is good. Two kids in college no loans. no credit card debt. Email me for more information When he retires he'll also rec. a lump sum of about $70k. Sorry..forgot to add only serious people please. The first two posts were stupid. Trying to see what other savings or investing vehicles may be availble  more

Resolved Question: Do u use your credit card online ?

Do u use credit card for making payments online? Do u feel secure in using ur card online?. Actually i am appearing for this Oxford business plan cometition where in we are developing alternative payment methods for online purchases , we plan to open payment kiosks at various locations (like grocery stores etc) where u can pay cash for ur purchases , what happens in our model is that you order something online u get a order code for that particular order , which is valid for a fixed time , u got to the store and pay in cash the amount for that order and ur order gets processed , other wise the order terminates if payment is not made in that period , so the model is pretty safe as well.., so wud u prefer to use our mode of payment instead of the credit card ? for using our service u just need to sign up ( like for email ) and pay a little annual fee... please give ur suggestions for developing the model Thanks!! thanks bubblegumbum.... how about if we placed the cash recieving counter in every apartment building ? or we ensure that the counter is accessible to all that is the person can just go there as a evening walk.. like it is so near to u that u can just go for a stroll and make payment in the evening for ur day's purchases ? Please give ur suggestions...  more

Resolved Question: Where can i get help building my business credit?

have a brand new business and I am seeking a business credit card that does not require a personal guarantee. My business is so new that I have just started receiving clients so I don't show a profit yet. Are there any RELIABLE & Trustworthy credit card companies that will issue a credit card, even for just a few hundred dollars worth of credit, so that I may start building a credit rating for my business? Unsecured is prefered but I would settle for secured if need be. Thanks in advance for your help!!  more

Resolved Question: Considering Filing for Bankruptcy in Virginia?

I have recently lost my job after being in the telecommunications industry for ten years. I have had no luck finding a new 9-5 job with a regular salary. I have been forced to take a job full time at a restaurant. I have over $29,000 in credit card debt most with APR's in the high 20's. I have done my best over the last 6 months to keep up with my minimum payments but am finding it impossible recently to balance my debt along with my living expenses. By living expense, I do mean the bare minimums. Rent, utilities, gas, food etc.. I have not wasted funds on entertainment or purchases other than does required for work. I had an hour long conversation today with a debt consolidation company. It is has been in business since 1965 and is non-profit. I actually used their services in the past to consolidate debt that I managed to pay off about 8 years ago. They analyzed all of my assets, income, debt and overall financial situation. They determined that I was running at a 65% deficit between what I am brining in and what I owe. They recommended that, although it may sound harsh, my best option was to file for bankruptcy. They determined that I would not be able to keep up with any type of repayment schedule that they would negotiate with the banks and that a fresh start may be my best option. I have avoided the thought of filing for bankruptcy in the past for several reasons. But now that my income is at an all time low and my job prospects do not seem to be sorting themselves out in the near future, I do not now what other options I have available to me. Needless to say, the stress of the whole situation has been making life extremely unpleasant. I am single, have no kids, and will not be purchasing a house in the near future. The only asset I own, is an 8 year old car. I have five questions: 1) Other than having a bankruptcy ruling on my file for the next ten years and not being able to secure credit, what are the other disadvantages of filing for bankruptcy? 2) I do not have disposable income. I am making enough to pay for essentials. Would my chances of having the entire debt excused be good? Or would I still be responsible for paying a percentage? 3) I know from my corporate experience that my credit file would be reviewed during the job applications process. I am considering a career with the Federal Government. How would a bankruptcy ruling be looked upon by the government during the job application process? 4) How much with a reputable bankruptcy lawyer cost me? 5) I have also read that another option is to do nothing and ignore my creditors. The following excerpt below is from http://bankruptcy.findlaw.com/ . Is this plausible? Do Nothing Surprisingly, the best approach for some people deeply in debt is to take no action at all. If you're living simply, with little income and property, and look forward to a similar life in the future, you may be what's known as "judgment proof." This means that anyone who sues you and obtains a court judgment won't be able to collect from you simply because you don't have anything they can legally take. (As a famous song of the 1970s said, "freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose.") Except in unusual situations (being a tax protester or willfully failing to pay child support) you can't be thrown in jail for not paying your debts. Nor can a creditor take away such essentials as basic clothing, ordinary household furnishings, personal effects, food, or Social Security, unemployment, or public assistance benefits. So, if you don't anticipate having a steady income or property a creditor could grab, bankruptcy is probably not necessary. Your creditors probably won't sue you, because it's unlikely they could collect the judgment. Instead, they'll simply write off your debt and treat it as a deductible business loss for income tax purposes. In several years, the debt will become legally uncollectible. And in seven years, the debt will come off your credit record. I am planning on contacting a bankruptcy lawyer for further advice but wanted to get an idea as to what I am dealing with before I further the process. I appreciate any feedback the Yahoo community is able to provide! Thank you in advance!!  more

Resolved Question: Bit complicated any advice please?

My partner Adam and his friend Tom worked at the same place but had opposite shifts so when one of them was in work the other would be off. Adam decided to set up his own business and began going about it but the only problem he has was finding the money to start it going as he had nothing to secure a loan on and had bad credit from a few years back.Tom suggested that they should go into business together as a partnership and that his father would lend Adam the money as a personal loan. This was agreed and a contract was written and signed about the repayments. Although the business name is in both accounts the accounts are only in Toms name because of Adams bad credit. As soon as the business took off Tom quit his job. My partner is still in his employment and also runs the business three days a week. Tom treats the business as his own as Adams money came from his father ands uses the bank card for personal expences and takes a weekly wage from the account. what rights as Adam got?  more
