'Make use of UiTM design grads'

Entrepreneur and Cooperative Development Ministry secretary-general Datuk Musa Muhamad said the ministry would boost cooperation with UiTM in the furniture industry.

He said entrepreneurs should also open their businesses overseas to compete with Thailand and Indonesia.

"There is market potential in South America, India, Africa and the Middle East. We have also been to Dhaka and there is a big opportunity to market our products there."

He said furniture exports were expected to reach more than RM10 billion in 2010. The United States remains the biggest importer of Malaysian furniture, followed by Japan and the United Kingdom.

He said last year, furniture exports were worth more than RM8 billion.

The three-day event aims to give entrepreneurs new ideas in design and marketing, and to introduce local products to the international market. more

She said, "Each piece of garment in the season is given a story. Our customers are drawn to the appearance of the garment and also empathise with the narrative. This becomes our unique brand personality in the marketplace." The sales revenue of her company currently exceeds tens of millions of renminbi annually.

Less crowded segments in China

Garment for particular occasions such as evening gowns can serve as a promising niche segment in the country. "The key is that a label often reflects the personality of the owner. Alternatively, it is at least something the owner familiar with or fond of," said Mr Wong. more

BROKER CALL - China's Focus Media unaffected by Olympic ad laws

Focus Media's shares closed down 4.17 pct at 24.58 usd yesterday on fears that its outdoor advertising business in Beijing is subject to a rule that only Olympics sponsors can advertise on the medium in August and September. Goldman Sachs said the new rule only applies to a few television screens in the company's Beijing travel and hotel network, while its commercial network, poster frame, in-store and online businesses are not subject to the rule. "The travel and hotel network is immaterial to revenue and earnings," Goldman Sachs said in a note. The Nasdaq-listed company will report its second quarter results in August. Start-ups 'should take online shopping opportunities'

According to Entrepreneur.com, the tightening economic climate may provide startups with the opportunity to look past price comparison sites and give customers new ways of looking for online bargains.The website pointed to research carried out by the Pew Internet & American Life Project last year, which found that 43 per cent of consumers feel frustrated over not being able to find the information they want online.This is something that new companies could capitalise on through their online lead generation strategies, Amanda Kooser of Entrepreneur.com said."Price comparison, shopping assistants, bargain finders and product lead generation aren't new to the web, but entrepreneurs can find ways to improve online shopping," she remarked."Startups that succeed in this space will leverage the growing social nature of the web or focus on underserved niche areas."David Smith of online retail trade body IMRG recently said that the fashion sector offers the most growth potential for UK web stores. more
