City will focus on keeping businesses

Keeping Stow businesses from moving to other municipalities for financial advantage remains a key initiative to the city's plan for economic development.

"We need to spend a lot of time on retention," said city of Stow Mayor Karen Fritschel. "Seventy-five percent of [economic] growth nationwide comes from retention. We're trying to be proactive, making the process of businesses going through planning and commission [as quick as possible.]"

Summit County Executive Russell M. Pry and the Stow-Munroe Falls Chamber of Commerce hosted an economic development forum July 23, addressing the topics of keeping business in the community, facilitating economic growth and improving the use of city resources.

"We want to encourage a company to come to Stow but we won't poach them from other communities." Fritschel said. more

MILLER: Oppenheimer's Gheit says the other big issue facing major oil companies is government interference including the possibility of a windfall profit tax in the U.S.

GHEIT: As higher oil price push earnings to record levels, governments, including our own and others, they can be greedy. They want to balance their budgets. They want to do a lot of things, so guess what? The most convenient things is to dip their hand in the pocket of oil companies.

Inmarsat, United Utilities, Britvic: Business round-up July 25

United Utilities, Britain's largest publicly traded water company, said that current business is in line with its expectations as the utility continues to benefit from higher prices allowed by the industry regulator.

United Utilities is "confident of meeting its regulatory efficiency targets" over the next two years as laid down by the regulator Ofwat, even as energy and property rates increase, the company told shareholders today.

Britivic sees sales jump

Britvic, the company that bottles Pepsi in the UK, said sales have jumped 30pc so far this year after it bought a division of C&C and milder weather followed last summer's rainfall.

Shares in Britvic fell as much as 4.9pc after warning that its cost base is rising. Sales climbed to £690m through July 6, the company said today. more
