Squeeze hits business confidence

Tough economic conditions are seriously affecting business confidence as profits fall, a study just published has revealed.

Firms' optimism about business in the next six months is at its lowest level since records began, although companies in Scotland seem to have a more positive outlook than the rest of the country.

The Business in Britain survey from Lloyds TSB Commercial questioned 1,800 UK firms.

The bank's Business Confidence Index for July revealed that the balance of firms expecting better rather than worse order books, profits and sales for then next six months dropped from plus-18% in January to minus-8%.

Of those quizzed, just plus-2% are expecting high than lower sales in the next half year compared to plus-28% six months ago, while the balance of UK firms predicting higher rather than lower profits over the same period has dropped from plus-4% to minus-25%. more

McGuinty attacking on five fronts

In a luncheon address to the London Chamber of Commerce, McGuinty reassured the business community his government's five-point plan will help stem the tide of job losses, but it can't control the value of the Canadian dollar, price of oil and the U.S. economy, all of which have combined to hammer the manufacturing sector here.

"If I could wave a magic wand and reassure everyone in Ontario they would not lose their job, I would have done it by now," McGuinty said. "We will work as hard as we can to turn this around as quickly as we can."

Last week, Sterling truck in St. Thomas announced it will slash 720 jobs, joining 600 on layoff at the plant. That's the latest in what has been an ongoing saga of layoffs and plant closings in the area.

In the last year about 1,000 manufacturing jobs have been lost in the London region and 8,000 manufacturing jobs have been cut over five years, helping fuel the city's unemployment rate of 7.4 per cent. more

To Raise Profiles

The expansion of social-networking sites and new tools making online interaction easier are giving small businesses new opportunities to network with each other and their customers, and to expand their reach. Instead of just setting up a network for their own customers, many are realizing the benefits of hooking up with other businesses to collectively raise their profile in a particular geographic area or industry.

Dedication Required

Small businesses are often better positioned to take advantage of social networking than larger businesses because they often seem more approachable and so customers and prospects are more likely to be interested in connecting with them online. And they're more nimble. "Smaller companies are a lot more able to react and be proactive" by using social networking sites to promote their business, says Alex DeNoble, head of the entrepreneurship department at San Diego State University. more

Business bigwigs all aboard with Kerry’s Acela plan

Hub business leaders are embracing U.S. Sen. John F. Kerry’s plan to improve infrastructure along the high-speed Acela train’s northeast route allowing the bullet train to run full throttle.

"The rail service is very valuable to our members," said Jim Klocke, executive vice president of the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce. "In European quarters, they have extremely fast trains, and the prospect of that here is very appealing."

Advertising in Ferret leads to upsurge in MatCam Oz business

With Hess pointing out that there has been a definite upsurge in business since advertising with Ferret.

Hess is happy with the experience he has had with Ferret and says his advertising dollar is well spent, “It is still pretty competitive and this enables people to be able to use it…Ferret is good value for a good price."

MatCam Oz is a growing company having recently expanded into Victoria and with further plans to expand into New South Wales and Western Australia in the next few months.

Does Hess intend to continue advertising with Ferret? “Absolutely"
