UH Chemist Earns Top Honor For Simplifying Manufacture Of Drugs, Plastics

Simplifying the process for forming compounds that can be used in many everyday products, such as pharmaceuticals and plastics, has earned one University of Houston chemist a prestigious honor.

Olafs Daugulis, assistant professor of chemistry in the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at UH, is among 118 outstanding young scientists, mathematicians and economists in the United States and Canada to be named an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow for 2008. This distinction is bestowed upon exceptional researchers early in their academic careers. Thirty-five of these fellows have gone on to win the Nobel Prize since the Sloan Foundation first began these awards in 1955.

Daugulis developed a simplified technique that saves time and labor, produces less waste and reduces costs while making compounds potentially useful for manufacturing pharmaceuticals and plastics. more

Ad Legend Hal Riney Dies at 75

Hal Riney, who wrote "It's morning again in America," brought a distinctly Western voice to the New York-dominated advertising industry, was nominated for an Academy Award and led passengers of an airliner on a daring escape from terrorists, died Monday of cancer at home in San Francisco. He was 75.

Riney created (and often narrated in his own resonant voice) advertising campaigns for Bartles & Jaymes, Gallo, Henry Weinhard's Private Reserve beer, Perrier waters and Saturn automobiles, among others. His elegant, wry style stood in stark contrast to the jangling commercial world of the latter 20th century. The company he founded, Hal Riney & Partners, earned its reputation on the basis of his distinctive sense of humor and reserve. David Ogilvy once proclaimed Riney "far better than I ever was at my best, and he may be better than any other person I have known in this business."

Riney held fast to his roots throughout his life, never leaving the West Coast, which served as a source of inspiration for his body of work. more

Patrick Signs Book Deal For $1.3 Million

Gov. Deval Patrick has signed a deal with a New York City company to publish his autobiography. Broadway Books announced the deal Friday. Terms were not disclosed, but it's believed to be worth $1.3 million, according to WBZ's Jon Keller. Keller discovered Thursday that Patrick was making the rounds of New York publishing houses peddling his book last Thursday, while his casino bill was being defeated on Beacon Hill. According to a publishing executive who saw the proposal, it promises a highly personal account – "like Barack Obama's first book" - of Patrick's childhood growing up poor on Chicago's South Side, his journey to Milton Academy courtesy of a scholarship program that helps underprivileged kids obtain top-shelf secondary educations, and his matriculation at Harvard University. A spokesperson for the publisher said Patrick will write the book himself. more

WINGS roars into Barrie April 1

Entrepreneur Diane McGee is the guest speaker for a dinner of the Women in Networking Growing Strong (WINGS) next week.

April 1 Roaring Women Barrie is meeting at the Barrie Country Club, 635 St. Vincent St. N. in Barrie.

McGee is a wife, mother and grandmother recognized for her gratitude. In fact, WINGS was developed after she noticed home-based businesswomen could benefit from a supportive environment that combined networking and mentoring. Magician part of Easter Egg Roll

For Michael Grandinetti, transforming a college degree in business and marketing into a successful career in magic involved no smoke or mirrors, just a lot of hard work.

"It was never a question of 'Do I want to do this or not, but how do I do this'?" he said.

Considering when he was a student at West Mifflin High School, he once made a girl disappear during halftime at a football game, Grandinetti had a good start.

"I'm one of those really lucky people who knew what they wanted to do from a very early age and everything in my life has been going down this path."

Mr. Grandinetti, 30, whose major-league illusions have been featured on national television and in Las Vegas and Branson, will perform in another high-profile venue Monday, at the annual White House Easter Egg Roll. more
