New federal push to fire illegal immigrants

The Bush administration unveiled a revised rule Friday threatening businesses with prosecution unless they fire employees identified in government records as possible illegal immigrants, offering a new explanation but virtually no change in content from the regulation that a San Francisco federal judge blocked in October.

The Department of Homeland Security announced the new version of the so-called no-match rule on its Web site and said it would invite public comments for 30 days.

The department then plans to ask U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer to lift his injunction. At the same time, it has asked a federal appeals court to overturn the Oct. 10 decision by the judge, who found that unions and businesses had raised serious questions about the rule's legality. more

Andover business owners have their say over parking fee increase

ANDOVER — Downtown business owners came out in force last night to oppose the 50-cent parking meter rates set to go into effect in June.

In response, the selectmen decided to form a task force to study the business district parking problem.

The board could decide to keep the rates at the current 25 cents, add more free short-term parking in the town's center, create parking permits or continue with its plan to double the rates.

"We want to create a plan so when we do implement fee changes, there's agreement to what it looks like," selectmen Chairman Brian Major said.

The 20 shop owners that attended the meeting said an increase to 50 cents would deal a whopping blow to businesses that will be struggling this spring when the Main Street construction project begins causing large-scale disruptions around their businesses. more

Business Jet Door Falls Off; No One Hurt

GRAND JUNCTION, CO -- Aviation officials say the main passenger door fell off a twin-jet business plane as it was taking off from a Colorado airport.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Mike Fergus says the door tumbled from the Bombardier Challenger CL-60 shortly after takeoff Monday from Grand Junction Regional Airport. No one was hurt.

He says that he doesn't know how high the plane was, but that it returned to the airport and landed safely. He also didn't know how many people were aboard, but the plane can seat about 20 passengers.

FAA investigators are expected at the airport Tuesday.

The plane's registered owner is WFP Investments. No one answered the phone after business hours.

Citizens for a No Kill Philadelphia (CNKP) holds lecture series at Drexel School of Law and Hector the Pit Bull (Vic’s former dog) was STAR A panel discussion was held last night at Drexel University's Earle Mack School of Law titled The Importance of Creating a Safe and Humane Society for all People and Animals. It was hosted by Citizens for a No Kill Philadelphia (CNKP) and Drexel's Student Animal Legal Defense Fund. The main point demonstrated by speaker Donald Cleary of the National Canine Research Council was "The dogs called pit bulls are just dogs." The star of the evening was by no doubt, Hector the Pit Bull, a rehabilitated former Michael Vick fighting dog rescued from Bad Newz Kennels by BAD RAP a San Francisco based rescue group and adopted by Clara and Andrew "Roo" Yori. Hector delighted attendees with his gentle nature, loving attitude, and grace under pressure (of public appearances) in spite of his numerous eternal scars from his former life. Certified by Therapy Dogs International, Hector has passed the AKC Canine Good Citizen exam (twice) and the temperament test of the American Temperament Test Society. He carries his own business cards in his vest wherever he goes and is free with giving affection and pets with any human nearby. His job is being a therapy dog and an ambassador for the pit bull breed. Hector has passed 10 tests to become a certified therapy dog. And no, Vick did not stop by to see how Hector is doing. Cleary went on to point out that the words pit bull and dog are not used interchangeably; arguing they should be he clarified Dr. Randall Lockwood's position that dogs cannot be characterized without humans. He also defined the difference between family dogs and resident dogs. The former being a companion animal who is treated as part of a family, living indoors, cared for and loved with the latter being dogs used for guarding or protection, often chained and kept outside with little, if any human interaction. Cleary also noted negative impressions about pit bulls have been perpetuated by the media and used the examples of two dog bite incidents. One, a fatal dog bite of a six year old child by a non pit bull dog received only two published articles nationwide while a story about a minor pit bull bite incident received thousands of articles written about it. All speakers were in agreement it is important to bring to the public's attention the positive stories about pit bulls, like Hector's. Leigh Siegfried, certified pet dog trainer and owner of Opportunity Barks, a Jenkintown based company, spoke about canine aggression and the fact it is situational. An example mentioned was highlighted in a picture shown of a pit bull chained to her whelping crate with an oversized sized chain and her nursing pups. Another was allowing a child (or adult) to try to engage an emaciated dog in interaction; this can be a recipe for disaster because a starving dog is much more likely to bite than want to play. She stressed it is people that need to control dogs citing the importance of training and the ongoing impact of a loving owner upon a dog. Opportunity Barks also holds classes in Philadelphia. Next was Elise Van Kavage, Esq., Senior Legislative Attorney with Best Friends Animal Society in Kanab, Utah. VanKavage explained breed specific legislation (BSL) is in fact discrimination and called for legislation outlawing the practice. Pennsylvania is one of only two states that does outlaw BSL practice, thereby preventing townships and other local governments from enacting BSL. She dispelled the myth of a dog bite epidemic and quoted statistics showing a fourfold decrease in reported dog bites from the 1970's to present time. Moderator Stacy Coleman of the Animal Farm Foundation in New York stressed the importance of communities coming together to be the voice of the voiceless and reminded everyone to be respectful of each other's opinions and points of view when dealing with BSL. CNKP's Garrett Elwood introduced some local animal advocates including Dierdre Franklin of Pinups for Pitbulls, Allison Lamond from PAWS, Christina Voigt from ACCT, Claire Tillman, Humane Education Coordinator at CNKP and Alanna Burke from Saving Temple's Cats. Many attendees were able to pose for photos with Hector and Roo Yori. Questions from attendees were answered and participation was interactive. It was clear that those in attendance were dedicated animal advocates who want to make a difference in Philadelphia. Resolved Question: How do I add text to a word document without adding the textbox?

I am attempting to create some business cards and do not know how to add text to the bottom without also having the text box there. When I delete the textbox the text gets deleted also. In Print Preview the textbox also shows up so I know it's there to stay uless I delete the whole thing. Help :)I started doing them by using the Avery website. I can't find the exact template that I would like to use so therefore I had to improvise a bit. As much as Avery proclaims to have everything I need, I'm having a hard time finding it! Resolved Question: WHAT IS "RESOLUTION" ON THE "ASK" SYSTEM? My Question Certainly was NOT resolved!?

I suppose Ask closes a question when IT decides to do so. Is this indiscriminate? Then why is the OFFENSIVE "What the Hell is Kwanzaa" question still viewable? Previously I wrote: How can a Kwanzaa Question Be "Resolved" When It Has So Many Wrong Answers? Someone asked if Kwanzaa was extinct and closed out the responses when the answers were probably to his satisfaction without regard for facts. Some references were declared negative based on Kwanzaa items not being available in stores. How ridiculous! Kwanzaa is created to counteract the commercialism of the business world which promotes buying gifts and families going broke instead of the true gift of Christmas, which is Christ. Kwanzaa gifts are much more precious because they are often "Homemade." Others can be as simple as a promise of doing a good deed for family members. For Kwanzaa true observers, they have no interest in quantifying their numbers to the media or larger community. The fact that Kwanzaa is still going on after over 40 years is a testament to its vitality. Although it may be growing slowly, it is growing steadily. Kwanzaa is alive and well if one knows where to find it. And it is increasingly becoming important to some who are aware to keep certain practices circumspect from the general public. Yet others are bold enough to not care what the general public thinks and goes on about their business of celebrating their heritage the same as those from any other country: Europe, Asia, Latin America, or anywhere. Kwanzaa is definitely still holding its own. My follow-up question might be: Are people who ask such questions to be considered really serious? Or is it that there are those out there who ask questions where they suspect there might be derogatory or diminishing commentary in regards to race. (Don't think this is harsh, because it is identifiable all over the internet.) Others declare it is still a holiday because Hallmark still makes cards. I do buy all I see and never see enough. But thank you Hallmark. But here again, there are many self-produced Kwanzaa card publishers if one takes the time to find them. Just to let you know. Someone answered: I agree with you. I try to give all askers an honest, non-biased, and hopefully accurate answer. If they choose an incorrect, sarcastic, or racist answer, there is nothing anyone else can do about it. Are people who ask such questions to be considered really serious? Sometimes yes, sometimes no, but I always take their questions seriously. This way, the people who truly are serious will receive a good answer, and those who aren't will not get the satisfaction of annoying/offending others, get bored and move on. Kwanzaa does in part resist commercialism, so your praise of Hallmark cards is a little contradictory. Someone else wrote: I kinda agree with Tyler, when you are giving props to Hallmark. In the past, when my family and friends have celebrated Kwanzaa, I have never known anyone at any of the gatherings, have we ever bought cards, or any store bought gifts. Every gift had been made or something traded. I agree that it is slowly catching on, but keep the faith and please keep in mind that if main stream stores are not housing what you are looking for, venture out to stores that may carry the product, or shop in the African or Afrocentric communities. Don't expect this western society to catch on, or cater to an idea that counteracts with the business world that promotes buying gifts, and causing unsuspecting families to go broke. I now respond: I am not really giving Hallmark "props." I simply will purchase Kwanzaa cards whenever I see them. That has nothing really to do with Kwanzaa, as I explained. Is not worth the effort to try to stop a commercial company from producing anything that it desires -- even if it is preferable to purchase the cards from African-American resources and artists -- and I do -- when I can find them. The only "saving grace" may be that most likely it is African-American Hallmark employees who are creating those cards, and the purchase gives them an opportunity for extended employment. So the way I see it, my comments were simply upholding the validity of the event -- not the business. It is somewhat coincidental that the business facilitated the process -- that was all. more

Resolved Question: How can I renew my website? ..it's a complicated situation?

Last year, January 25, I created a website. Keep in mind, I'm not that educated with this sort of thing, and I just have been trying my best to learn as I go. I went with JustHost.com, and they were a nightmare. I tried to cancel my account, and they wouldn't let me. I'll spare you the details, but after 2 months of fighting with them, I contacted a guy who builds & maintains websites for people & businesses for a living. Even he thought it was absolutely ridiculous, the way JustHost was doing business. Anyway, I had to just cancel that particular card that JustHost was charging, so THEY would cancel ME for non-payment. That worked. Well, my website expired Jan 25th, & apparently I am under a "grace period" of some sort. I have no idea how to renew my domain name! I can't login, because my user name & password was canceled by JustHost when I canceled that card. So I'm totally at a loss as to how I can renew it. I tried calling JustHost, but after a little over an hour of being placed on hold, and having NEVER talked to a live person, I hung up...this was all too familiar from last year, anyway, I have NEVER talked to a live person at JustHost. So ...anyone have any bright ideas? more

I had an article his business was in professionally framed, made him a scrapbook, and have a box of candies/lingerie. I wanted to present this in a special way, rather than hand it to him. But we're ALWAYS home at the same time and it's impossible to surprise him. I have off work today and thought about doing a "pre" surprise -- when he comes home, maybe have the lights off, candles lit, with some Valentine's Day treats and a card that says, "Will you be my weekend Valentine?" But I want to save the gifts for actual Valentine's Day. Since he'll be at home with me all weekend, what's a romantic way I can give him his gifts? Create a scavenger hunt? Kwanzaa is alive and well if one knows where to find it. And it is increasingly becoming important to some who are aware to keep certain practices circumspect from the general public. Yet others are bold enough to not care what the general public thinks and goes on about their business of celebrating their heritage the same as those from any other country: Europe, Asia, Latin America, or anywhere. I feel like I am holding myself back from being mature. Today there was this girl at school I met who has her whole life planned out, has her own appartment and job, and even adopted a boy who's parents died in a car crash! She wants to get a degree in medicine and open a free clinic in Uganda. The reason I brought this up is because I think I could do everything that she does. I can be as responsible as an adult, talk like an adult (in fact, the way I talk in a professional environment is much more natural than my school speaking voice), dress like an adult, and my values are solid. The only problem is, I'm holding myself back for a number of reasons 1) mature people are usually boring 2) I like to be playful and childish 3) I'm gay and I'm not attracted to mature guys. I have spent the last 16 years in nursing. ( I originally went into nursing because I was unemployed and nobody would give me a job and I created a new career as a nurse for myself). I have lost my job as a nurse because I have fallen out with my employers. Because of something they have done - not me. I don't want to spend a single second working as a nurse again. I have worked in all kinds of nursing jobs. Medical wards, surgical wards, A &E, clinics , agency and bank etc Now I feel like I am on the scrapheap at 38. I have just started to sign on and claim benefits but I just want to be happy and to have a happy job and career. I have always wanted to write and that has always been my dream and I really hope to do that one day but it won't pay the bills yet ! But I feel it is what I was born to do. I do read the tarot cards and am thinking of trying my luck at doing it full time ( as a business) but don't know if I can make enough money by doing that ? I do enjoy it. And I have made small amounts of money online by helping people with my readings. I wouldn't mind becoming a photographer but that seems a long way off and there doesn't seem much chance of that making money. Considering I can't even afford a flippin camera ! I am building my very first website using the Website Tonight program that Go Daddy offers, and I would like to copy a header I've seen on another site powered by Go Daddy. This website uses the same template as mine, so I know it's possible, I just don't know how to recreate it. We accidentally deleted an email user account from our domain (the emails are managed via Google's Gmail). When we went to recreate the same user (with the same email address, since we have 1000's of business cards printed with that email address), we got an error message stating that we could not recreate the user since it was just deleted. When we checked GMail online support, it said that we had to wait 5 days to recreate the user if we wanted to use the same email address. Well, it's been five days, so I went to recreate the user and (no surprise), it didn't work. Got the same error message. We need to get this email address up and running NOW, since clients are getting all their messages bounced back to them. Luckily, it's a holiday week, but this is just becoming a nightmare. How can we get this account set up again. NOTE: creating the account as a group (as online support suggests) will NOT work for us, as it does not work with our other systems. I have found definitions on the internet that say retail businesses: 'Retailing' consists of the sale of goods/merchandise for personal or household consumption either from a fixed location such as a department store or kiosk, and In commerce, a retailer buys goods or products in large quantities from manufacturers or importers, either directly or through a wholesaler, and then sells individual items or small quantities to the general public or end user customers, ... so, I think I'm actually a Service business since I process one order at a time, I don't create the product or purchase it in advance of the sale and I don't hold any inventory. I don't do any work besides making the sale and creating the artwork on my computer. Hello, I am a small business owner and I sell sports memorabilia such as Team Jerseys for NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB, as well as Soccer teams. I started out selling to friends and family but I have since taken my business online as I feel it creates a more professional look. cheapojerseys[DOT]com There are several local stores that sell Sports Jerseys and I got the idea to try and sell to them. How would I go about approaching the owners and what would I say to them? I have samples of my products to show them but I have no idea how to sell to a store. I usually sell them for 50 dollars and make a profit off of that but I know a store would not likely pay me 50 a jersey. What are some possible solutions?
