Medtronic Jumps on Defibrillator and Stent Sales (Update1)

Net income in the period ended April 25 was $812 million, the same as a year earlier, or 72 cents a share, the Minneapolis-based company said today in a statement. Adjusted profit of 78 cents a share beat analysts' estimates by a nickel.

Stent sales, propelled by U.S. approval of the drug-coated Endeavor in February, jumped 56 percent. Revenue from defibrillators and other heart rhythm devices, the company's biggest products, climbed 5.4 percent as Chief Executive Officer William A. Hawkins defended Medtronic, the world's largest maker of electronic heart devices, against growing competition and October's recall of defibrillator wires.

``All in all, it looks like it's a good quarter,'' said Jan David Wald, an analyst with Stanford Group Co. in Boston. ``For defibrillators, they demonstrated at least they could get back to where they were. more

Businesses under siege as banks increase lending rate

As letters are being sent out almost discretely to bank clients on increased interest rates to borrowers, particularly business people, there are concerns that already stifled businesses are once again under the sledge hammer of banks.

One of such letters from a bank put the blame for the increased on lending rates on the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) adjusted about two months ago.

The MPC had increased the MPR by 25 basis points to 10.25 percent in June 2, 2008.

The MPR is the rate at which the CBN lends to the banks. Consequently, this shot up the cost of funds in the market.

Based on that fact, most of the banks thus increased interest rates from 19.0 percent to 25 percent effective July 2008.

But a majority of experts, including business people who spoke with Business Day said the impact will be crippling. more

Landmark Group a finalist for award The Business Journal of the

Local development firm The Landmark Group is up for an award in Florida thanks to an apartment project it built after Hurricane Ivan.

The Winston-Salem-based developer is a finalist for project of the year with Affordable Housing Finance magazine, one of 32 in 10 categories for its 2007 readers' choice competition.

The list appears in the August issue, and Landmark made the cut for its Johnson Lake Apartments, a 160-unit project it built for seniors after Hurricane Ivan destroyed much of the housing in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties along the Panhandle in 2004.

The winner will be decided in November. Judging criteria, according to a Landmark release, include social and economic impact, and the project's role in community revitalization.

Kodak is coming up with all sorts of new businesses to replace its lost photo film revenues. One is counterfeit product detection. The company's Traceless System is a service that helps companies come up with ways to detect whether a product is theirs or a counterfeit. Steven Powell, GM of Security Solutions, demonstrated it for me today. They put material in labels, coatings, or even cloth threads that can be detected by a specialized digital camera. If the stuff isn't detected, the product is counterfeit. This is a big deal for clothing, luxury goods, drugs, and even surprising things such as auto parts, insecticides for mosquito nets, and yellow road paint.
