Imperial Tobacco Says Business Is Meeting Forecasts (Update1)

``Our operating environment remains challenging, but our business fundamentals are strong,'' Chief Executive Officer Gareth Davis said in the statement.

Imperial rose 18 pence, or 1 percent, to 1,768 pence in London trading yesterday. The stock has dropped 25 percent this year, heading for its first annual decline in nine years.

NYSE Delisting

The company also said today that it would delist its American depositary receipts from the New York Stock Exchange, citing administrative costs and low volumes. Over-the-counter U.S. ADR trading will still be permitted.

The maker of Golden Virginia tobacco and Rizla hand-rolling paper said in June it plans to cut 2,440 jobs in Europe after buying Altadis. Imperial aims to close six of its 58 factories in a restructuring plan that will cost 600 million euros. more

Island businesses opening back up after Dolly

Most small businesses weathered Dolly fairly well, suffering some damage but not enough to shut them down for good - unlike some of the major hotels.

Electric company AEP Texas has told residents full power to the Island would likely be restored by Thursday night. On Tuesday, power was restored to about a third of the Island.

The dock at Palm Street - one of the establishment's most remarkable features - was destroyed. Laferty doesn't know if the state will allow it to go back up.

Palm Street, however, was more fortunate than neighboring Señor Frog's. That restaurant's aluminum roof was mangled and much of the rest of the structure damaged. Laferty said the building would be demolished.

Down the street at Louie's Backyard, windows and some dock rails were knocked out. more

Gupta removed as InfoGROUP chairman

Gupta will continue to serve as chief executive officer of the company, which used to be named InfoUSA.

The company also said Gupta has "orally agreed" with the Board of Directors' Special Litigation Committee to pay InfoGROUP $9 million. According to a news release, the payment is subject to a settlement agreement and court approval, but it's not clear if it is referring to settlement of the shareholders lawsuit.

Calls to Gupta and company media representatives late Tuesday weren't immediately returned.

The Omaha company will also appoint a new chief financial officer, replacing Stormy Dean, who will be moved into a different position at InfoGROUP.

Bill Fairfield, chairman of DreamField Partners Inc. and the board's lead independent director, assumed the position of chairman last week, the company said. more

Green light for Arbuckles deal

Ms Cameron, who now lives in Tasmania, has wealth of $320 million according to the 2008 National Business Review Rich List.

About 30 shareholders were at the meeting and two voted against the sale. Another 133 votes were received by mail and one was against the move.

Ms Cameron is Postie Plus's biggest shareholder, with 15 per cent. Because of that, the purchase had to be approved by the other shareholders.

Former managing director Paul Young, who resigned in 2005 and remains a shareholder, was one of the three against the sale.

Mr Young was at the helm when the company bought Arbuckles from John and Vicki Arbuckle for $9.5 million in 2003.

He criticised the decision to sell and said at yesterday's meeting that the company was not addressing the cause of the problems it was facing by selling Arbuckles. more

HAWS building losses tenants

It actively recruits businesses the area, advocates for existing businesses and produces events like the downtown Summer Music Series. DWSP moved just last week. Its old office is already filled by the local campaign of presidential hopeful Barack Obama. That office is only temporary, though. It will close after the November election. DWSP’s new home is the Chatham Building at 305 West Fourth Street, which also houses Brew Nerds Coffee, Associated Artists of Winston-Salem and the Arts Council. "This is a very central location in downtown," said Glenda Keels, vice president of the DWSP. "We’re almost at the center, there’s a lot of energy on the streets, a lot going on and we believe we’ll be able to operate very nicely out of here." Its new second floor office space – in suite 2E – accommodates everything that the old office did, including space for its Downtown 101 classes, which provide crash courses for those interested in opening businesses downtown. more
