Can Student Consultants Help Grow Your Business?

In the spring, for instance, Oliphant's students helped develop a marketing plan and SWOT analysis for a local business called Complete Parachute Solutions – a $33 million company that supplies government agencies with parachutes. You can read more about that in this NYT story.

And this summer, Oliphant took 27 international marketing students on two, two-week trips to Europe (Italy, Austria, and Germany) to visit companies like BMW, Swarovski, Riedel, and a small bicycle tour and rental company called Mike's Bike Tours, owned by American expat Mike Lasher. Among the students' suggestions to Lasher: add local advertising to each bicycle; begin using Google AdWords; start doing a night tour that includes a pub crawl; create and sell more branded paraphernalia. It'll be interesting to see what advice he takes to heart. more

Across North Carolina, the unadjusted jobless rate was 6.2 percent in June.

Resolved Question: Is this what Barack Obama has planned for us?

The Dinner Roll .. Once upon a time I was invited to the White House for a private dinner with the President. I am a respected businessman, with a factory that produces memory chips for computers and portable electronics. There was some talk that my industry was being scrutinized by the administration, but I paid it no mind. I live in a FREE country. There's nothing that the government can do to me if I've broken no laws. My wealth was EARNED honestly, and an invitation to dinner with an American President is an honor. I checked my coat, was greeted by the Chief of Staff, and joined the President in a yellow dining room. We sat across from each other at a table draped in white linen. The Great Seal was embossed on the china. Uniformed staff served our dinner. The meal was served, and I was startled when my waiter suddenly reached out, plucked a dinner roll off my plate and began nibbling it as he walked back to the kitchen.. "Sorry 'bout that," said the President. "Andrew is very hungry." "I don't appreciate..." I began, but as I looked into the calm brown eyes across from me, I felt immediately guilty and petty. It was just a dinner roll. "Of course," I concluded, and reached for my glass. Before I could, however, another waiter reached forward, took the glass away and swallowed the wine in a single gulp. "And his brother, Eric, is very thirsty," said the President. I didn't say anything. The President is testing my compassion, I thought. I withheld my comments and decided to play along. I don't want to seem unkind.. My plate was whisked away before I had tasted a bite. "Eric's children are also quite hungry." With a lurch, I crashed to the floor. My chair had been pulled out from under me. I stood, brushing myself off angrily, and watched as it was carried from the room. And their grandmother can't stand for long." I excused myself, smiling outwardly, but inside feeling like a fool. Obviously I had been invited to the White House to be sport for some game. I reached for my coat, to find that it had been taken. I turned back to the President. "Their grandfather doesn't like the cold." I wanted to shout, "that was my coat!" But again, I looked at the placid smiling face of my host and decided I was being a poor sport. I spread my hands helplessly and chuckled. Then I felt my hip pocket and realized my wallet was gone. I excused myself and walked to a phone on an elegant side table. I learned shortly that my credit cards had been maxed out, my bank accounts emptied, my retirement and equity portfolios had vanished, and my wife had been thrown out of our home. Apparently, the waiters and their families were moving in. The President hadn't moved or spoken as I learned all this, but finally I lowered the phone into its cradle and turned to face him. "Andrew's whole family has made bad financial decisions. They haven't planned for retirement and they need a house. They recently defaulted on a subprime mortgage. I told them they could have your home. They need it more than you do." My hands were shaking. I felt faint I stumbled back to the table and knelt on the floor. The President cheerfully cut his meat, ate his steak, and drank his wine. I lowered my eyes and stared at the small grey circles on the tablecloth that were water drops. "By the way," he added, "I have just signed an Executive Order nationalizing your factories. I'm firing you as head of your business. I'll be operating the firm now for the benefit of all mankind. There's a whole bunch of Erics and Andrews out there and they can't come to you for jobs groveling like beggars...we need to spread YOUR wealth around..." I looked up. The President dropped his spoon into the empty ramekin which had been his crème Brule. He drained the last drops of his wine. As the table was cleared, he lit a cigarette and leaned back in his chair. He stared at me. I clung to the edge of the table as if it were a ledge and I were a man hanging over an abyss. I thought of the years behind me, of the life I had lived. The life I had earned with a lifetime of work, risk and struggle. Why was I punished? How had I allowed it to be taken? What game had I played and lost? I looked across the table and noticed with some surprise that there was no game board between us. What had I done wrong? As if answering the unspoken thought, President Obama suddenly cocked his head, locked his empty eyes to mine, and bared a million teeth, chuckling wryly as he folded his hands. "You should have stopped me at the dinner roll," he said. more

Resolved Question: Would women prefer men had the baby?

I see this more and more as modern women become more disgruntled by having children. We don't want to give up time from our careers because men don't have to give up anything. Resolved Question: DS: "The dogs called pit bulls are just dogs." Hector the Pit Bull, Vic’s former dog a STAR?

Citizens for a No Kill Philadelphia (CNKP) holds lecture series at Drexel School of Law and Hector the Pit Bull (Vic’s former dog) was STAR A panel discussion was held last night at Drexel University's Earle Mack School of Law titled The Importance of Creating a Safe and Humane Society for all People and Animals. It was hosted by Citizens for a No Kill Philadelphia (CNKP) and Drexel's Student Animal Legal Defense Fund. The main point demonstrated by speaker Donald Cleary of the National Canine Research Council was "The dogs called pit bulls are just dogs." The star of the evening was by no doubt, Hector the Pit Bull, a rehabilitated former Michael Vick fighting dog rescued from Bad Newz Kennels by BAD RAP a San Francisco based rescue group and adopted by Clara and Andrew "Roo" Yori. Hector delighted attendees with his gentle nature, loving attitude, and grace under pressure (of public appearances) in spite of his numerous eternal scars from his former life. Certified by Therapy Dogs International, Hector has passed the AKC Canine Good Citizen exam (twice) and the temperament test of the American Temperament Test Society. He carries his own business cards in his vest wherever he goes and is free with giving affection and pets with any human nearby. His job is being a therapy dog and an ambassador for the pit bull breed. Hector has passed 10 tests to become a certified therapy dog. And no, Vick did not stop by to see how Hector is doing. Cleary went on to point out that the words pit bull and dog are not used interchangeably; arguing they should be he clarified Dr. Randall Lockwood's position that dogs cannot be characterized without humans. He also defined the difference between family dogs and resident dogs. The former being a companion animal who is treated as part of a family, living indoors, cared for and loved with the latter being dogs used for guarding or protection, often chained and kept outside with little, if any human interaction. Cleary also noted negative impressions about pit bulls have been perpetuated by the media and used the examples of two dog bite incidents. One, a fatal dog bite of a six year old child by a non pit bull dog received only two published articles nationwide while a story about a minor pit bull bite incident received thousands of articles written about it. All speakers were in agreement it is important to bring to the public's attention the positive stories about pit bulls, like Hector's. Leigh Siegfried, certified pet dog trainer and owner of Opportunity Barks, a Jenkintown based company, spoke about canine aggression and the fact it is situational. An example mentioned was highlighted in a picture shown of a pit bull chained to her whelping crate with an oversized sized chain and her nursing pups. Another was allowing a child (or adult) to try to engage an emaciated dog in interaction; this can be a recipe for disaster because a starving dog is much more likely to bite than want to play. She stressed it is people that need to control dogs citing the importance of training and the ongoing impact of a loving owner upon a dog. Opportunity Barks also holds classes in Philadelphia. Next was Elise Van Kavage, Esq., Senior Legislative Attorney with Best Friends Animal Society in Kanab, Utah. VanKavage explained breed specific legislation (BSL) is in fact discrimination and called for legislation outlawing the practice. Pennsylvania is one of only two states that does outlaw BSL practice, thereby preventing townships and other local governments from enacting BSL. She dispelled the myth of a dog bite epidemic and quoted statistics showing a fourfold decrease in reported dog bites from the 1970's to present time. Moderator Stacy Coleman of the Animal Farm Foundation in New York stressed the importance of communities coming together to be the voice of the voiceless and reminded everyone to be respectful of each other's opinions and points of view when dealing with BSL. CNKP's Garrett Elwood introduced some local animal advocates including Dierdre Franklin of Pinups for Pitbulls, Allison Lamond from PAWS, Christina Voigt from ACCT, Claire Tillman, Humane Education Coordinator at CNKP and Alanna Burke from Saving Temple's Cats. Many attendees were able to pose for photos with Hector and Roo Yori. Questions from attendees were answered and participation was interactive. It was clear that those in attendance were dedicated animal advocates who want to make a difference in Philadelphia. CBS' Todd Quinones did the story "Vick's Victim" and Jim Melwert of KYW wrote “Hector Aims to Show the Softer Side of Pit Bulls.” The following link shows a video of Hector visiting a room full of 3rd Grade children. http://wcco.com/pets/hector.vick.dog.2.1386512.html Thank you in advance. Star for your contacts. What does this open debates for: That Vic was not such a bad guy? BSL? The dogs called Pit Bull are just dogs? The media’s motto,The public's need for education, by just banning the bully breeds, the government has given the public a false sense of security. Leaving the communities open to a higher number of dog attacks. more

Resolved Question: Ah Obama? not that people should not pay debts? But old people? On disability? Debts decades old?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I'm young. Owe no one, leastwise student loans. I say fk credit cards. If you cannot afford to pay when you purchase, don't. Stay away from any government benefits. The rug can be pulled at any time. But then maybe some congress members or senators will have to pay back some of their old debts. Maybe before they became part of government...from years ago. (Obama, why are you allowing punishment of old people? and the disabled? Is Obama who I thought he was? Is he a clone of bush? what happened to my great hope with this man) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Defaulted Loans May Haunt Seniors by Ellen E. Schultz Monday, March 8, 2010 A little–noticed law could soon result in smaller Social Security checks for hundreds of thousands of the elderly and disabled who owe the U.S. money from defaulted loans and other debts more than a decade old.Social Security benefits are off–limits to creditors, such as credit–card companies and banks. But the U.S. can collect debts to federal agencies by "offsetting," or withholding Social Security and disability payments. The Treasury currently withholds benefits of 3.1 million Social Security recipients to recover defaulted student–, farm– and small–business loans, unpaid income taxes, amounts veterans owe for health care, and other debts to the government. Previously, the U.S. hasn't been able to withhold Social Security payments to recover most debts delinquent for more than ten years. But a provision in the 2008 Farm Bill lifted the ten–year statute of limitations on the government's ability to withhold Social Security benefits in collecting debts other than student loans—for which the statute of limitations was lifted in 1997—and income taxes, where the limit remains 10 years.oh no oh no!!! I am not blaming Obama for the Bill... it rests with Bush. However, Obama seems unknowledgeable in some respects. Like he only finds out about important matters --- after the fact. I see him rallying for health care..it's importnat and affects many many seniors..and then I see this article...yes,, one should pay their debts, if they are able to. But not if circumstances prevent such payback. After all the seniors did their share also. They worked hard and paid taxes...the biggest friggn debt-dodgers are big business and the Maddox's of the world..and then some. So don't get me wrong. Like I said, I am young I'm also educated. Well learned. I make comparisons. If Obama was such a gret choice, then let him prove it. He - as well as many of you - will be old one day, needing diapers and straws, and maybe the few dollars they take out of your retirement or disability benefits, because you were unable to pay some government loan. Govt is and has always cheated u ~~~and i am tired of this "oh I paid back my student loan" like you accomplished some great deed. Maybe your loan was only 2500.00 sillybutt. Others have loans in the tens of thousands. So govt says, "well come back and work for us for some paltry yearly salary and we MIGHT forgive your debt." Govt traps you! but not me! Get over youself. Your loan was small. Govt forgives murderers and embezzlers and defrauders and other REAL criminals. So again, get over youirslef! and open yhour eyes. No one is more blind than those with 20/20 vision, but who see with their eyes wide shut! more
Voting Question: QUESTION for CIVIL RIGHTS ATTORNEYS?
Have been told PUBLIC LIBRARIES can and will SEE in their own screens what you have in yours. Is this MANDATORY by FEDERAL GOVERNMENT? Is this in place only since September 11? This is INVASION OF PRIVACY to non-terrorist American citizens; what are our RECOURSES? May sound silly but I feel my work at library computer is being "spyed" by librarian who had argument with me. Believe this, for he already went into my computer reservation, told me to leave library, and after I thought there was PEACE between him and me, and after making me apologize for comments, he searched to see who's card I was using, not only told me again to leave, but called police who stand guard at door. Also cancelled both my two relatives' cards, though officer, who HAPPENS TO BE RELATED to me, vouched for fact I had their consent. Second part of my question is, do I have any saying LEGALLY in this?: Dozens upon dozens of homeless (and non-homeless) individuals repeatedly use computers entire day, using many other people's cards. While they eat, drink, curse, play music, use cell phone, use obscene language, undo their pants zippers, etc., I was singled out by librarian for using my father's card with his complete authorization. I've taken care of all FORMAL COMPLAINTS to mayor, county manager, head of libraries, administrator of that branch, etc., etc., but now I know this librarian has all my information in front of his face, viewing my personal emails, and BASICALLY KNOWING every little detail about personal and business matters......Being as VINDICTIVE as he is, he's capable of hurting me further. Anything I could do?MNWOMEN, you're WRONG; have not been banned. HOPE I'M NOT, so I won't have to SUIT!!!!!! We're still in the FREE USA, and citizens still have RIGHTS. more
Resolved Question: Is our government really this stupid, or do they just think that the American people are?
Last May, Obama signed the Credit Card Accountability Responsibility and Disclosure Act of 2009. “We're not going to give people a free pass, and we expect consumers to live within their means and pay what they owe, but we also expect financial institutions to act with the same sense of responsibility that the American people aspire to in their own lives,” he said. When the bill went into effect earlier this week Obama said, ""These new rules don't absolve consumers of their obligation to pay their bills, but they finally level the playing field so that every family and small business using a credit card has the information they need to make responsible financial decisions," Obama said. Surprise, surprise, surprise....... NEW CREDIT CARD LAW RIFE WITH LOOPHOLES BEWARE: Hidden and deceptive fees are still lurking around the corner As new rules to protect credit card holders from predatory practices went into effect on Monday, issuing banks warned that the regulations would result in higher interest rates and less access to credit. You've heard a lot about the Credit Card Accountability Responsibility and Disclosure Act of 2009, which took effect on Monday. The new law requires credit card companies to treat their customers more fairly, and that's clearly a victory for consumers. But even with the new law, there are still many ways you could end up paying more than you should for your charge cards. Can you imagine how shocked our elected government officials were when they learned that there were loopholes in this bill? My, my, my.........I can absolutely understand how this could happen though. I usually cut a few large entry holes in any fence I build too......by mistake of course. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/35544006/ns/business-consumer_news http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2009/05/obama-signs-cre.html http://www.credit.com/news/credit-debt/2010-02-22/obama-administration-praises-credit-card-reform.html more
Resolved Question: Why is Obama such a self-contradicting idiot?
http://www.businessweek.com/ap/financialnews/D9E2MKH00.htm Obama offers himself as business-friendly centrist "He urged more cooperation between government and business to achieve a balance between federal intervention and corporations run amok. As Obama put it, "It's not about being anti-business or pro-government; it's about being pro-growth and pro-jobs." "Obama said competiveness depends on investments in education, energy and increased exports." Aww, isn't that cute. Little Barry wants to pretend he's "business-friendly" all of a sudden. He wants to put on his grown up hat and shoes and talk economic mumbo jumbo, and sound like a real economist. Too bad he forgot one thing - IMPORTS. The thing we could change the most quickly and easily is CUT IMPORTS. Instead, he wants to focus on the difficult and ineffective things. Oh ya, education. That's sure to have an effect starting like, what, FOUR YEARS from now. Oh yes, and there will be SOOOO many jjobs coming from energy. Sure, I can't keep count of how many towns where the local power plant is the major employer in town. And sure, let's just pound the pavement and SELL MORE EXPORTS. Oh (smack forehead) why didn't we think of that before. Ya, let's just tell those salesmen to SELL MORE. Ya, great idea. I'll bet those salesmen have been sitting around playing cards, not realizing they could make more money if they SELL MORE. If you've ever worked in sales, how many times have you heard this speech. BUT WE COULD CUT DOWN OUR IMPORTS TOMORROW, which would have the same effect as increasing exports. It would force manufacturing jobs back to the USA. But Obama just hasn't figured that out yet... They want the government to control what we read, eat, drink, smoke, consume, think, drive, heat our homes at, cool our homes at, credit card companies, banks, pay, education, the climate (haha, sorry, but that is just funny), college loans, business, health care, etc... Resolved Question: 1 in 4 American children in poverty and rely on government hand outs Why won't JP Morgan hire their parents ?
MARTINSVILLE, Ohio — With food stamp use at record highs and climbing every month, a program once scorned as a failed welfare scheme now helps feed one in eight Americans and one in four children. Skip to next paragraph The Safety Net A Program Once Scorned With millions of jobs lost and major industries on the ropes, America’s array of government aid — including unemployment insurance, food stamps and cash welfare — is being tested as never before. This series examines how the safety net is holding up under the worst economic crisis in decades. It has grown so rapidly in places so diverse that it is becoming nearly as ordinary as the groceries it buys. More than 36 million people use inconspicuous plastic cards for staples like milk, bread and cheese, swiping them at counters in blighted cities and in suburbs pocked with foreclosure signs. http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2009/11/28/us/20091128-foodstamps.html ------------------------- And the issuer of those food stamps JP Morgan just doesn't believe that Americans are worth hiring ? Resolved Question: what type of economy are these? traditional, market, command, or mixed?
A) You live in a state that controls the farms and the factories. When you go to the store, there may be very few if any of the items you want at a fixed rate. You may have to stand in line for a chance to buy such items or try and buy it on the black market. You are guaranteed schooling and jobs to fit your needs B) . Your next door neighbor owns his own business. You work for him after school. He makes most of the decisions about his product. However, the government regulates your wage and the conditions that you work under C) You decide to have your own business. You determine what you will produce, how much you’ll sell it for, and where you will market it. However, you have no government protection against your competitors or those who may have seen your idea and decided to market it and sell it for less money, driving you out of business D) d. You are trained to make your own clothes. To you, it means you will take your turn tending your family’s sheep, carding the wool that is sheared from them, then spinning the thread and weaving the cloth. If you are very industrious and have extra cloth, you may trade (or barter) it for something a neighboring family has produced. more
Voting Question: The REAL reason Google is leaving China?
Two Gmail accounts get hacked and Google threatens to pull out of China if they don't allow uncensored searching. Yeah, ok Google.... 1. Why would Google give a toss if two e-mails got hacked with an organization that has nothing to do with the company itself? That's like me being the owner of Wal-Mart and closing down some stores after a huge shootout, it makes NO sense. 2. What the hell did they expect when they started doing business in China? HELLO! This is not the country of Switzerland we are dealing with, it is China. Of course there's going to be laws against censorship along with suspicious cyber attacks and funny government rules. China does not have the same laws that the U.S. does. Here in the U.S., we can bash Bush all day and not get arrested for it. 3. Google talks about this "20 or so U.S. companies got attacked in the process." It seems to me like this statement is an excuse to add icing to the cake. Companies in the states get attacked almost every day from random hackers/virus/malware. All you have to do is go out and buy anti-virus software if you're so concerned about this. I think this is just an excuse that Google pulled out of their hats in order to leave China. My girlfriend's debit card just got hacked about 3 weeks ago by someone in another country with charges of over $300. 4. The REAL reason Google is pulling out is not because of this, but because of poor business in China. I don't necessarily believe that Baidu is the cause. If you're fighting against another team in baseball, why quit when the score is 3 to nothing? Google is not making good money in China, so they use excuses of cyber attacks to leave the country by trying to force them into filtering their search results. 5. Google is stereotyping China using this technique, and they did a good job too. Hey, everyone knows that China is full of hackers, lets use that to make a good reason to pull out. 6. America is known to lie and deceive people in the media/community and it has been a trick used ever sine this country got invaded. Google doesn't want to make themselves look bad, so they use some pennyass lie about 20-30 companies being attacked by China. Everyone in the world knows that America does this, hell, I am a born citizen of this country and know for a fact that we do this. This has been our tactic for years on building this country. Wake up people. A multi-billion dollar company is not going to pull out of a country because someones e-mail account got hacked, that's just stupid. And I bet everyone a month's paycheck that Google would not give a toss about this attack if they were making lots of money in China. PS: Google says that the hackers stole a source code. The e-mails belonged to Chinese human rights activists, not Google staff. They refuse to release any more information about the source code being stolen, so I doubt this statement is true. I am thinking this may also be a lie. more
Resolved Question: Is Malaysia a racist country, there has been a lot of outburst about Africans, is this racism?
I am a Nigerian living in Malaysia and I have become so amazed at the level of racism in this country, first they accuse Africans for every thing but are Africans really at fault, every body is always trying to rip the Africans off, taxi drivers, landlords, Indians, any body who has little transactions with Africans, I read in the papers where a Malaysian complained bitterly about Malaysia governments continuous harrasment of Africans through Malaysian government controled newspapers where Africans are being blamed for all the crimes in Malaysia yet corruption and crime continue to increase, the Malaysian governement is just using Africans as a scapegoat to cover up for their local crimes which is on the increase daily, I read in a Thailand newspaper that more than 500 Malaysians were caught last year and the previous year for credit card scams, they posted it on the web, the next day it was removed. I am not saying Africans (particularly Nigerians) dont commit crime, my oppinion is, catch the criminals but dont punish innocent Africans for the crime of a people, there are many Malaysians living and doing all sort of businesses in Africa, they have never for once being harrassed by any body...I entered the lift to my floor in the condo where I stay only to see grafiti signs of "I HATE AFRICANS" and niggro girls cheap, this is racism, a lot of Malaysians believe that Africans commit almost all the crime in Malaysia but this is not true, even the government knows this is not true, some body said they drive big cars and drink beer all day, a lot of Africans living in Malaysia are from very wealthy and influential families, the Malaysians should know that Africans are not criminals as they are being portrayed by the government. they should look inward for the cure to their own problems and stop blaming foreigners, they make so much money from Africans and yet still say these things, enough is enough more
Resolved Question: Las Vegas marriage and legalities??
I'm not going to go into detail with names or anything, but here's the situation in a nutshell... I live in California and a guy I know went to Vegas in early November of last year and got married to this chick so she could have a green card. He's not inlove with her or anything, it was more of a "business deal" because of all the office work she does for him at a cheap price. Anyway, I found out she crossed the border illegally from Mexico when she was 15 or 16, she's now 27 & had never even bothered to apply for citizenship all these years!! Well, this guy owns a business & I'm worried about what could happen with this situation if the state or government found out. I also discovered that this type of marriage would be considered a "fraud" because you can't legally marry someone just to get them a green card, so therefore it would be invalid? So here's my question... he doesn't want to get in trouble, but he doesn't want to hurt this girl's feelings either. So if he got this quicky marriage in Vegas, would he have to have an annulment in Vegas, or can he get the annulment in California as well and how long would this process take considering they've only been "married" for a little over 3 months? Please ONLY ANSWER if you're a lawyer/ attorney, etc or someone who's had a similar experience as this is a serious situation. DON'T leave an answer just to get points, that crap gets annoying!!Just adding some details for those who have asked: NO, she has never bothered to apply. She came here at 15 or 16 with her mother & 3 other people; they don't even have health insurance, an s.s #, NOTHING; every bit of money they make is through cash. I know it can take quite a while to be approved because my mom is from Germany & had to go through the process, which took a couple years or something because of all the paperwork, etc.. So I know if this girl had applied when she came here 10 years ago things would be settled already. If you want to know something REALLY hilarious, she likes to end every other sentence with "I'll call the cops on you" whenever she gets involved in a not-so-comfortable situation. more
Voting Question: I'm being held here in the states by my husband and I want to go home to Canada.?
Now before you all start jumping up and down, yelling, 'You've got to be kidding!' or 'Must be your own fault!' let me explain how I got here. I'm a fifty-five year old Canadian woman. I've been married for the last 30 years or so to my second husband, have three daughters and 2 grandsons. Two of the girls live near me in the United States. My eldest is in Canada, with her husband and their boys. I have been here for twenty years, moving where my husband's job moved. We had 2 farms in Canada. We went into business with my son-in-law and eventually lost everything. The business went under last year; mad cow, recession etc. My husband had my son-in-law using tax right offs up there, while he opened a Business account and wrote off the farms. He's a Marine Manager and makes a hell of a good salary. He blamed the son-in-law, the governments, me, everyone but hime. I understood what was happening and felt I owed everything to him, for he had put up with me all those years. After seven years of marriage, and thanks to my husband (he saw a story about it on tv and said 'hey that's you and your crazy father) I went to my doctor, who diagnosed me and a sent me to a psychiatrist. I am bi-polar. I accepted this and wanted more than anything for the meds and therapy to work. After years of therapy, I became well, balanced and on my meds. That hasn't changed. My husband calls me crazy everytime I stand up to him. What I didn't know at the time was that my husband is a controller. He does the shopping, decides where we are to spend every week end, tells me when to go to bed and when to get up. He is a born, British subject, a nationalized Canadian citazen and now, an American citazen. He has me down here, no green card, no citizenship, and a Canadian passport due to run out in August. I don't know where to begin searching for help. I left him once before and spent a year living on my own, filing for divorce, in Canada. Then I found out I have no rights, at least with me up there and him living down here in Texas. I did not know he was going to leave me with no way to get home. I told him I wasn't coming down to be his housekeeper. I was wrong on both counts. I have no rights to file for divorce down here. I'm down here illegally. He has told the government nothing about my being here. He has, in fact, scolded me many times that it was my fault I had no green card as I believed a border guard who told me I had to spend six months and one day down in the states, less than six months in Canada. We had two farms in Canada and I had my own home and yet I gave up my card. Of course, to my husband, I'd been foolish and should have just lied. Though a florist, I have no job because I have no green card. I have no money except for the credit card he allows me to use, always near the limit, which he can access and watch every transaction I make. Yes, I do have family in Canada. Do you know how difficult it is to ask them to help when I know they don't have any money? I know I should find a way, but I don't know how. I'm beginning to believe him when he says 'i'm the crazy one.' Yes, I have a pschyitrist down here (Texas) and a family doctor, but he is so good at making himself the victem and I'm so tired of being called crazy. When I was in Canada last, two of my daughters told doctors how my husband had scary anger issues. They were wasting their breath. Now that you've read this far, I don't need to know how I've made the wrong choices. I just want to know how to go home. Any kind of info would help. more
Resolved Question: Telemarketing 'do not call' question?
We're on the national do not call list. We get a call 3-5 times a day from a specific company. I have asked them several times in the last week to be put on the do not call list, but they hang up on me and call back in a few hours. I discovered today that the company has business with someone else in the home, at the same number, but they're not calling about her account, just to sign us up with this credit card service. Today I tried to call them back, but the number that was on my caller ID was someones cell phone who wasn't with the company. The fact that I've asked about 5 times for them to put me on their do not call list says something, the fact that they hang up on me says more, but the cell phone thing is just too much. Is there any way we can sue, or at least have their practices checked by someone from the government or something? Any information is greatly appreciated!Gomanyes, if I could pick a winning answer now, you would be it. I'll try and see if I can get it in a day or two. Thank you for reading the question before answering. Everyone answering "Put your name on the do not call list" is really disappointing. Thank you for giving me a real answer, even if it was short! more
Resolved Question: What would this form of government/lack thereof be?...?
I already know it is like communism but I think this particular idea of it might be called something else. 1.)everyone is equal regardless of race or age or religion the only determining factor in acquiring a job is ability if you are either Strong enough or smart enough or both you get the job on a first come first served basis and cash is eliminated as currency for Business stores/groceries etc are credit based and cards are also eliminated either fingerprint 7/or retinal scan no rfid chips because dumb asses think that's the mark of the beast but cash will still be used for interpersonal trade such as prostitution or in other situations where the thumbprint idea would not work such as collection plates or poker in a home you take the cash to the bank and it is credited if you want it to buy food at a restaurant you can creditt cash you have and much like direct deposit you work for money and it is credited to your account. 2.)If you are hurt or unable to work a strenuous job you get a living wage stipend this is taken from the surplus of the workers that don't spend all of there paycheck(in another way to say it giving to charity is not a choice it just happens.) 3)medicine and schooling is free within limits if you go to colledge and study a particular thing and later get a job in that field then the state pays for it if you study but don't get a job the state takes the cost out of 1/2 the pay from the job you do get and if you can't live on the other half they suppliment food rations (like food pantries today)with the current fda approved diet they give you stuff they have record you didn't buy with the 1/2 of your pay you do get. 4)age of concent is exactly that when the partners both say yes and no one is hurt. 5)any drug that you can't overdose on is free. 6) as said previously medicine is free but I also said to an extent if it is cureable they cure it if it's a fatal disease they let you live and help you out but if you want to/ask to die they provide euthenasia for you. 7)voting is obligatory there is no penalty for which way you vote but everyone is made to that way you can't bitch about it if your guy wins. 8)you must live with someone for a year beforehand if you want to marry them. 9)the government will assign you a job if you ask for one if you are big stong and dumb they give you demolition if you are big strong ans smart you are the supervisor smart and weak you get a computer or filing job small and stupid you get the jobs they give retards.(cause they get the stipend thing mentioned earlier unless they want to work then they get a job accourding to there ability. 10)clothing shall be free but if you are in need of free clothes you must accept a uniform like a jumpsuit. 11)If you/your family already owns a farm and you can sustain yourself your share is divided amount the rest you can get an odd job when you need.want something and get it on that or you can barter your produce or your farm can be and industrial operation and you can get your credits that way. O.K. now ask questions about certain situations and how my system would cover them I'll answer with additional details check back and edit your answer accourdingly thank you for your timeto answer the question 1 it would be lead by a brain trust of the greatest intellectual minds and artistic people so that way it would be balanced The fingerprint scanner needs to sence that the finger is alive and attached to a bodyIt would be kinda like england with a royal family that creates laws and a government that desiminates them down to the people.The ruling/governmental body would be elected rule for life then when they die there is a presidential race and the people vote and that person rules for life and when they die people vot new guy it is kinda like how the pope system is only it is all the people not just the important ones the braintrust and the government would be two seperate entities but they govt. would be influenced by the braintrust and then the people would vot on the ideas they supply the presidents main job would be as ambassador and tiebreaker when votes are too close to call he is the desider he also has the authority to make laws (the people vote on them)and when they agree the law is put into affect if the people dissagree it is placed in an idea file and saved for a later date.Basically (I am calling him president but actually a king kinda) The king Rules and makes laws the people vote and it is put into effect.Under him (but with more power in practice less in title)is a group of great minds and great hearts to create and collaborate on ideas to help people out new sciences of agriculture and metalergy and medicine etc. then under them the individual what america would call the guy that runs the state I beleave senator they would take the news down to there town the governers of the cities they would in turn give the info to the mayors of towns and they would each hold an assembly in there respective towns and tell the people the news if no new laws were made that week there would be town business such as marriag announcements or births or deaths whatever happens to be local news that week sowe don't have newspapers to save paper.unless there is a 3rd answer before i get back and the question goes to voting give it to brandon.if there are only the 2 give it him more don't vote any. more
Resolved Question: What do U think of this Court Says Ok To Deny Illegal Alien Public Service Isn’t it a federal law against?
In a rare case for a state that has long offered illegal immigrants sanctuary, an appellate court in Oregon has ruled in favor of a state agency that denied an illegal alien costly public services based on her immigration status. Oregon's largest regulatory agency, the Department of Consumer and Business Services (DCBS), rejected a claim to provide and illegal immigrant vocational assistance benefits after a 2005 work injury that resulted in a permanent impairment. The DCBS, which administers state workers' compensation and occupational safety laws, still awarded the illegal alien an undisclosed award for the impairment. However, the woman (Carmen Carreon) wanted more taxpayer-financed perks in the form of vocational assistance. The agency determined that she was ineligible for the benefit because she was not authorized to work in the United States. Carreon had the audacity to sue the DCBS for denying her the services, claiming that the agency's director overreached by creating an eligibility requirement not granted by Oregon's legislature. The Oregon Court of Appeals disagreed, ruling this week that state law grants the agency's director the authority to establish additional conditions for providing vocational assistance. Imposing a rule that requires a person to be legally authorized to work in the United States is a valid exercise of the authority granted to the director, the court said in its decision. Public agencies seldom reject illegal immigrants in Oregon, which has a statewide sanctuary law prohibiting police agencies and local governments from using any resources to apprehend or report illegal aliens. The state's largest city-Portland-has its own official sanctuary ordinance aside from the blanket measure. These sorts of protections have evidently emboldened illegal immigrants who are increasingly taking legal action against government agencies for denying their "rights." In the last few months alone, illegal aliens across the nation have sued various law enforcement agencies for violating their constitutional rights. Among them is an Ohio sheriff who helped deport a Mexican with false identification cards, a Maryland sheriff who arrested an illegal Salvadoran woman and federal agents who apprehended a group of illegal aliens in a Connecticut immigration raid. http://www.rightsidenews.com/201001318462/border-and-sovereignty/court-says-ok-to-deny-illegal-alien-public-service.html What do U think of this Court Says Ok To Deny Illegal Alien Public Service ?Isn’t it a federal law against coming into this country illegally - yet the politicians prevent local law enforcement from enforcing the law - setting up sanctuary cities? more
Resolved Question: Why don't Americans complain about the BILLIONS in taxes illegals pay every year?
It seem that they complain about them taking the so-called jobs we could have, they complain about the neighborhoods they so-called could be living in, they complain about them speaking the language they don't want to learn, but why don't they ever complain about the BILLIONS in taxes they pay? Especially the Social Security Administration, why is this? http://www.azcentral.com/business/articles/2008/04/10/20080410biz-TaxingImmigrants-10.html illegals pay billions in taxes every year. NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The tax system collects its due, even from a class of workers with little likelihood of claiming a refund and no hope of drawing a Social Security check. Illegal immigrants are paying taxes to Uncle Sam, experts agree. Just how much they pay is hard to determine because the federal government doesn't fully tally it. But the latest figures available indicate it will amount to billions of dollars in federal income, Social Security and Medicare taxes this year. One rough estimate puts the amount of Social Security taxes alone at around $9 billion per year. http://legacy.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20050410/news_mz1e10ruben.html Illegal immigrants and Social Security Here's the drill: People enter the country illegally, promptly procure bogus Social Security cards from the black market, and use them to get jobs. Eventually they get paid, and those earnings generate W-2s that go to the Social Security Administration, which tucks them away in something called the "earnings suspense file." (The government does try to notify some of the larger employers that Social Security cards they've accepted appear to be phony, but that's about the extent of its efforts to figure out where all this money is coming from.) According to the best estimates of the Social Security Administration, the fund has kept track over the last 20 years of more than $300 billion in total earnings – the vast majority of them attributable to illegal immigrants. more
Resolved Question: What is e-commerce really?
There's a new MLM business going around in our area. They have no license from the relevant authority because they claim that this MLM business is an e-commerce and needs no license from the government. They're sort of selling memberships, which includes a 0% interest and late charges free credit card (minimum limit $500, depending on the membership class) + life insurances worth $5000 + travel discounts. The ONE TIME membership fee for the lowest class is only $50. And on top of these, the members get to receive commissions + company royalties EVERY MONTH in terms of credit card repayment. So it's like they have free money of $500 every month just for a $50 one time investment provided that they are able to recruit 3 people at least into this scheme. They claim they don't need no license from our country because it's e-commerce. They originate from a neighboring country and has a license from there. But I wasn't convinced because they only showed us a scanned copy of it. So yeah, they said it's e-commerce in a way that all payments are done online. And they will receive their credit cards one month after joining to give them time to recruit members. So far, I don't know anyone in our area who has received theirs except for one guy who apparently is the one introducing this company to us. more
By late 2007, the 60-year-old Mexican national was involved in one of the largest health care fraud schemes the region has ever seen, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said. He was sentenced Tuesday to one year and one day in federal prison for helping McAllen cardiologist Dr. Fabian Aurignac bilk Medicare and Medicaid out of more than $1 million. “I didn’t know what the doctor was going,” Torres said in Spanish, dressed in a faded work shirt and slacks while pleading with the judge for leniency. “I sincerely did not know what he was up to.” But prosecutors disagreed. In several recorded conversations, Torres acknowledged his role in rounding up patients for the doctor and paying bribes to day care center staff for access to their clients, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Carolyn Ferko. Torres met Aurignac — who ran McAllen’s Cardiology Care Center on the 700 block of North Ware Road — while peddling his wares at the Valley’s adult day care centers. Since at least 2003, the doctor had been bilking the federally funded health care programs by hiring South American doctors who were not authorized to practice in the United States, giving them pre-signed prescription forms to hand out while he vacationed in Italy and Argentina, and later billing Medicare and Medicaid claiming he had overseen all of the patient visits, according to court documents. Torres’ contacts in the elderly care industry provided just the conduit the doctor needed to expand his fraud scheme, according to a 19-count indictment filed in their case. Aurignac paid Torres to win over management at these businesses and round up patents for treatments that were either unnecessary or never took place. Working as the physician’s middleman, Torres delivered bribes of $150 to $300 to day care managers and gave patients Walmart gift cards to submit to free health screenings. At one such business — La Familia Adult Day Care Center in Harlingen — Aurignac’s employees set up a camper in the parking lot to see patients, another violation of Medicare and Medicaid rules requiring all procedures be conducted in sanctioned medical facilities. The center’s manager — Martha Garcia Alaniz — pleaded guilty in July to one count of receiving kickbacks and was sentenced to one year of probation. For his part, Torres was paid $100 for each session set up with a day care center. In the year that investigators were tracking his activity, he received more than $40,000 from Aurignac. In May, Aurignac agreed to pay back $1.1 million to the federal government for his fraud. He is currently serving a prison term of four-years and nine months. The Texas Medical Board suspended his license to practice in 2008. Torres’ defense attorney maintained Tuesday that his client never really understood that what he was doing was illegal, but U.S. District Judge Randy Crane disagreed. “He was doing Dr. Aurignac’s dirty work to some extent,” the judge said. “But without this recruiter, Dr. Aurignac would not have had this business more
Resolved Question: Why are Republicans going to lose big time in November?
NOT!! What happened in the last 12 months? 1. Democrats used the fed to set interest rate to 0 to allow banks to earn risk free money by paying depositors nothing 2. Banks then use the 'free' money to buy treasuries to earn free money, rather then give 'risky' loans like small business loans 3. Government now gets the finance for the budget deficit (along with China, Japan..purchase of treasuries) 4. It then creates the monstrous stimulus to pay off political allies such as teachers union, auto unions, state and city union workers, political kickbacks and all sorts of pork projects. This is called spending public money to buy votes 5. With its base happily fed with the stimulus money, it then counts on the base to help push for all the liberal agenda such as cap and trade, card check, HC reform 6. These agenda are designed to increase control of citizens and to create even bigger liberal, dependent base. This will ensure the dems to be in even stronger power position 7. To top it off, under the guise of fiscal responsibility, increase tax to finance all the liberal agenda. Citizens got hit twice, first finance it, then pay more tax for it. 8. The grand plan should work out perfectly except for one minor detail 9. Citizens are NOT stupid, they are not fools to be led to the slaughtering house. MA election repudiation of liberals is the first strong push back. 10. Dems are now in a dilemma. They have waited a long time to push for their agenda, and they are not about to give them up. 11. Only problem is, in order to improve job situation, they do need to abandon the liberal agenda. Without job creation, they are doomed. That is where they are now. They may not know it, may be because they are still in the denial stage. Now, What part of these you don't agree? or you can just call me names and I understand where you are coming from also. Additional Details why am I clueless? I made sense out of these 12 months of madness. Did I not? Where am I wrong here? It is not about economy for the Democrats, its about power. That is the main reason why stimulus is not working. It was not even designed to work the way we expect it to work. Chinese stimulus seems to work for them, why? how much are you getting for your bank deposit nowadays? more
Resolved Question: What constitutes as an emotional affair?
Hubby in in service and was in a government vehicle in uniform, he was approached by an older woman in a public place asking about his branch of service, he gave her his business card, she in turn emailed him and told him to call her. This turned into him calling her and having multiple conversations for a month and a half. I will also add during this same time he had spiraled into a deep depression (possibly bipolar) and this was just one of the symptoms of his illness. This was never physical and he had no intentions of it being other than what it was, what was it? I honestly don't know. I do know she is quite a bit older than me, haggard and fake looking. I laughed and thought to myself he obviously was not in his right mind when it happened. He is being treated with heavy meds and on leave of absence. Comments? Anyone with similar experience?Actually, not looking for anything, just wanted some input for this type of illness. I know he had access to talking to me, he said part of it was ego. She thought there was going to be more and this is why SHE contacted him.Also, he hid it from me and lied when I asked him about it, the only reason he sought help is because I asked him to leave untilhe did get help. I am supporting him and always have we have been married and raised children together.I guess I should say she was only 7 years older than him, so mother-son, really? more
Resolved Question: statement of purpose, please help me with it, i welcome any change, thank you!?
As an international Chinese student in the United States, I believe that I have a great deal of business, academic, social, and cultural experience that will allow me to fit in well and contribute to the international flavor of Lund University. One of my most distinguishing characteristics is the diversity of experiences I possess. I am a business student with a flair for the arts. I am a woman with technical aptitude and an interest in entreprenership. I also have a passion for traveling and understanding different cultures of the world. All these elements have given me a very broad outlook, with varying degrees of knowledge in a range of topics. I strongly believe that although some are not related directly, all these qualities will influence my graduate work. My Business degree has given a strong foundation to my analytical skills since business issues research involves a lot of complex and intricate relationships among parties who are aiming at different goals, and the application of basic math, communication and psychology skills. Over the past four years in college, I have been working part-time with my own business, Shining SIM Card, set up when I just became a college student. I was the president of student government and am also an active member with SSE - Siemens Solar Energy. I have assisted my father in his project to supervise and monitor the process in his company during my breaks. More than what I have studied in school and college, it has been these experiences that have shaped the person that I am today. I believe that this unique blend of experiences has made me a woman with an original point of view. This blend has given me a broader perspective to and a good understanding of life and a goal to aim for. Among other things, I have this diversity of experience to offer Lund University. My most substantial accomplishment has been the success of Shining SIM Card that I managed in Dalian, China, where I have been working as a manager since 2005. Entreprenership, as a field, had always fascinated me right from my middle school days, and being an entrepreneur to contribute its utilities to mankind is the life long dream and career objective I persue, it is worthy to devote energy and commitment to found my own business and lead it success. Shining SIM Card, my first big step on my enterprise career, compared with prior experience, grew up from only one employee to fifteen, the main consumers from one campus were enlarged to other 6 big universities and also some small schools of the local city when I graduated. Most of my customers were college students, as a student myself, it was easy for me to do surveies, to know the popular tastes, and the most impressing way to promote the business with very limited resources. The advertisement form developped from hand writing poster on wall to big colorful advertisement scroll and products propaganda for freshmen annually. The goal for advertisement is let 60% of the students consider my products first when they are about to purchase, and let them to introduce us to the rest 40%. Also I had an online sale shop for the convenience of customers, which has been in operation for 5 years. Run my own business required me to believe in myself and in what I thought was good for the company. I had to take a pro-active approach, take the initiative and play a leadership role in motivating people and executing events to completion. A good manager is one who can figure out where problem lies and may happen, deal with it effectively by involving all the members of the company and improve the overall culture of the company. The problems I saw at Shining SIM Card had to be resolved to sustain the company. The fact that I was able to pull off this task alone has boosted my confidence in my abilities. The business climate has never been more friendly toward entrepreneurship than it is today. However, enterprise and creativity alone are rarely sufficient to bring an entrepreneur's ideas to fruition. Though, venturing off into Entrepreneurship is a challenge, one which I think some formal education can help solidify and provide a stronger foundation for success. So that leads me to my application for an entreprenership program at Lund University, and I wish to develop an idea based on research from Lund University, during the master year. more
Resolved Question: Does the new healthcare bill really say this?
pay close attention to every word .... An Indianapolis doctor's letter to Sen. Bayh about the Bill (Note: Dr. Stephen E. Frazer, MD practices as an anesthesiologist in Indianapolis , IN) Here is a letter I sent to Senator Bayh. Feel free to copy it and send it around to all other representatives. -- Stephen Fraser Senator Bayh, As a practicing physician I have major concerns with the health care bill before Congress. I actually have read the bill and am shocked by the brazenness of the government's proposed involvement in the patient-physician relationship. The very idea that the government will dictate and ration patient care is DANGEROUS and certainly not helpful in designing a health care system that works for all. Every physician I work with agrees that we need to fix our health care system, but the proposed bills currently making their way through congress WILL BE A DISASTER IF PASSED. I ask you respectfully and as a patriotic American to look at the following troubling lines that I have read in the bill. Voting Question: Where did the idea come from that Conservatives/Rep are "slightly more compassionate than a cannibal"?
I saw this in something I just read and I just don't understand it. I see many people say we don't want to help the poor, and because of that we must also believe most poor people lazy. It is true that many Conservatives see handouts, especially welfare, as oppressive. It is also true that many of the people who abuse these programs are, in fact, lazy or unwilling to try harder. Not all, of course, but certainly many. When I was very young, probably 5 or 6 years old, I remember my parents bringing home a couple boxes of BIG cans with government issued peanut butter, lard, bricks of cheese, boxes of powered milk and bags of flour and sugar. It was like Christmas!! My dad had been laid off from his job and mom was waitressing at a local restaurant. I guess they were difficult times for our family and I guess were very poor, but I never remember feeling poor. What I do remember the most of this particular day (besides the peanut butter and sugar) was my mom saying, "It was so embarassing to walk in there. I will NEVER do that again!" That was strange, I thought. We had PEANUT BUTTER and SUGAR!! I believe this was a true turning point for my parents. Dad began doing small carpentry jobs and mom returned to college, but continued to work nights as a waitress. Over the next 10 years my fathers small side jobs turned into a successful home building business and my mom became a teacher. I don't know for sure if standing in line at the fire station waiting for boxes of "surplus" food was the main motivator for them to change their situation, but I am sure it had something to do with it. However, many people took advantage of these programs, and these programs grew bigger and bigger over time. Government issued "surplus" food became government issued food "stamps" and food stamps have since become "food debit cards", much less embarassing. Temporary assistance became full assistance and this full assistance became a way of life for many people. Of course these programs are needed. There are many people who are very deserving of our help. However, far too many abuse this system and the system itself makes it very easy for them to do so, and quite comfortably. Most people will only take help until they don't need it any longer. Some people will take the help as long as they can get it. How do these programs motivate people to do something more with their lives and why are Conservatives thought of as being "slightly more compassionate than a cannibal" because we feel these programs hurt a very large portion of our society?rrm...No. Can't you tell? lol.......I did get a few hours, but I am not sleeping very well. I am heading to the Dr.'s shortly. My mind is not thinking rationally. Thanks for asking. That was nice of you. more
Resolved Question: Types of Modern Liberals?
Last past few weeks I've been exploring the variation within the GOP, democrat party and conservatives, now I'm looking at liberals. Which when compared to conservatism, liberalism is much more issue based than philosophical (my understanding of it anyways). My list isn't complete either in span or depth, but this is what I've figured so far. Environmental liberal- self explanatory, some groups belonging to such would be green peace, sea shepard, earth first etc, policies usually advocate government intervention in business to protect the environment. Social liberal- this would be feminism, gay, and abortion advocates, some groups would be move-on and code pink, policies are self explanatory. Welfare liberal- Acorn would be the most famous org here. Policies would include increased social nets, universal health care, government to lend a helping hand to the poor etc Union liberal- Wider spread of union’s influence, relative power over industry, policies would include card checks on votes and the EFCA, the SEIU is a well known group which advocates such. Race liberal- I’m going to have to explain this one a bit, the idea of a color blind society was once liberal, but the philosophy has fallen onto conservatives, a race liberal believes policies need to recognize race and compensate and organize laws for past transgression and current discrepancies due to such, that sometimes institutional racism needs to be implemented to reverse societal ingrained racism. One such policy would be affirmative action; I would also place decriminalizing illegal immigration under here as well though it isn’t a smooth fit. The reason I separate this from social liberal is because there is a recognized division between the two made relevant during California’s prop 8. Any thoughts on this? Anything you would change or add? Left wingers, if you believe my assessment is faulty please don't insult, I would love to hear your divisions. Right wingers, if answering, remember, this isn't a question for you to dig into liberals, I woul like to hear honest division based on what they support. I've received some good answers on this before, libearls as a bonus question for you, which set of policies do you identify with most?thank you Euridice, yes that is what I was looking for. more
Voting Question: What effect will opening a business have on personal credit?
I understand that business credit is different than personal and that at first many entrepreneurs personal credit is their business credit at first or at least the basis thereof. My question is, if you open a business is there any effect on your personal credit score? The reason for the inquiry is my personal credit score is decent about 700 but is falling because of a high debt ratio. So, because of the high debt ratio, lately no credit cards will touch me and what I want to do is transfer to an introductory rate to get out of high interest debt. I am able to pay all of my minimum balances plus 100 percent each month but I am of limited income from disability but get $26,000 a year for grants for Grda school each year, $10000 of which is government sub loans. So what is happening is I get the installments twice a year. I immediately pay down all of my cards ranging from $1,000 payment to $4000. My total debt is about $20,000 and most happened prior to my disability. Nearly all of my Grad school grants and loans are going to my credit cards and by the end of a semester I am out of funds from supporting my wife and son and myself. So, I use the credit cards I originally tried to pay down at the beginning of the semester and the whole thing cycles again. What should I do, bankruptcy? I really feel a moral obligation to pay off my debt, I spent the money and that is my responsibility. The problem is that because my debt ratio is so high and I constantly teeter on the limits of my cards I get hit with crazy rates. The last one was a raise from 5.9 percent to 15 percent and 32 months later a raise to 29.9 percent from Citibank. I think that with the upcoming laws the credit card companies are trying to lock me into these high rates and since my situation is that of a stressed borrower they immediately hit my account with any raises. That was really long winded. The 2 questions I have are will opening a business help my personal credit and can I freeze my credit card APR's or cards because of becoming "permanently" disabled in the span of accruing interest about 2 years ago. Any advice would be really appreciated, I''m really stressed out and trying to support my family while going to grad school and on disability all the while making the maximum amount allowed to stay on disability per month, $900.00. I'm so bogged down in interest that I can't make any head way on my credit cards because al of my payments go primarily to interest. Thanks.Okay "CVEG" how's that real estate BS degree treating you. I have a BS in HR and project management so I do have some idea over a BUS 1 class. The thing is I do not know how credit card companies view a business on personal credit. Thanks though. more
Resolved Question: Types of modern liberals?
Last past few weeks I've been exploring the variation within the GOP, democrat party and conservatives, now I'm looking at liberals. Which when compared to conservatism, liberalism is much more issue based than philosophical (my understanding of it anyways). My list isn't complete either in span or depth, but this is what I've figured so far. Environmental liberal- self explanatory, some groups belonging to such would be green peace, sea shepard, earth first etc, policies usually advocate government intervention in business to protect the environment. Social liberal- this would be feminism, gay, and abortion advocates, some groups would be move-on and code pink, policies are self explanatory. Welfare liberal- Acorn would be the most famous org here. Policies would include increased social nets, universal health care, government to lend a helping hand to the poor etc Union liberal- Wider spread of union’s influence, relative power over industry, policies would include card checks on votes and the EFCA, the SEIU is a well known group which advocates such. Race liberal- I’m going to have to explain this one a bit, the idea of a color blind society was once liberal, but the philosophy has fallen onto conservatives, a race liberal believes policies need to recognize race and compensate and organize laws for past transgression and current discrepancies due to such, that sometimes institutional racism needs to be implemented to reverse societal ingrained racism. One such policy would be affirmative action; I would also place decriminalizing illegal immigration under here as well though it isn’t a smooth fit. The reason I separate this from social liberal is because there is a recognized division between the two made relevant during California’s prop 8. Any thoughts on this? Anything you would change or add? Left wingers, if you believe my assessment is faulty please don't insult, I would love to hear your divisions. Right wingers, if answering, remember, this isn't a question for you to dig into liberals, I woul like to hear honest division based on what they support. more
Resolved Question: Is this the "fundamental change" 0bama wanted?
Remember 0bama's "fundamental change" remark http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xvJJP9AYgqU If 0bamacare passes, the government will have control of 49% of the economy.. Next will be Crap and Tax to redistribute wealth and weaken capitalism further Then Card Check to give control of businesses to SEIU and the unions Finally illegal alien amnesty to add to their voter base and secure "legal" elections. In parallel, the economy is trashed by more and more spending, printing money makes the dollar worthless, Leading for calls for the government to "do something" Leading to government control of industrial output Welcome to 0bamaland, USSA more
Resolved Question: How much cash goes to government for every £1 acquired working?
I'm reading a book (How I clobbered every bureaucratic cash-confiscatory agency known to man) which is written by a canadian author, according to her figures up to 85% of peoples pay end up in taxes her list of them includes: "excise and impost: income (federal, state/provincial, and local), sales, GST, Sin taxes (alcohol, tobacco), permits (firearm, building, septic, well), endless banking service fees (credit cards, stocks, bonds, accounts...), endless fines and penalties (traffic, invoice late fees...), travel (flight, hotel, rental), capital gains, corporate income, court costs, licences (marriage, dog, hunting, fishing, driving, piloting, all professional, all business), insurance (property, life, medical, vehicle, employment, workers compensation), fuel permit, gasoline (about 37%), inheritance, inventory, IRS/CRA interest and penalty charges (tax on top of tax), luxury, property, real estate, social security/Canada pension, truckers road usage, registration fees (birth, all professions, all vehicles), school, sports, communication (TV, cable/satellite, internet, fax, endless telephone service fees (universal, federal, state/prov., and local charges, surcharges, minimum usage.... ) tolls (road, bridge, tunnel), utility (water, gas, electricity, garbage), and the biggest, most insidious of them all: inflation which is tax on the ‘money’ itself" This is in Canada though, I was wondering whenever or not its probably more or less here in the UK or the same although that's probably hard to answer thanksAI - I don't think you read the list of taxes theirs a lot more than what you listed even if the 6000 odd isn't taxed it's still taxed when its spent on fuel, on any "luxury food" (anything that aint beans), on energy, on bank charges, on VAT, on carbon taxes (soon) I'm just listing what I can think of I'm sure theres a lot more so your answer is nowhere near accurate.Right so inflation's a product of the economic environment yet its been happening forever and the value of our money has been declining, where do you think that value goes? it doesn't disappear. One parent used to be able to work and the family could live comfortably yet now mostly 2 work and struggle.. it's hard to see the bars of an invisible prison mate you should read that book google it, you might awaken yourself to the fact your a slave. more
Resolved Question: As a Turkish National who married an American - how many different options are available to enter the U.S.?
I am Turkish National, I have a son from a previous marriage who was born in the USA. Since my sons birth, I divorced my husband - and my son and I moved back to Turkey - where we've lived ever since. Ten years after - i met and married an American. He and I both agree that my son should finish his schooling in Turkey. My husband has family in the USA and occasionally he needs to go back to attend to his family business. For example, and most recently, his mother and father's 50th wedding anniversary just happened. I had applied for a tourist visa - so that we could attend. My visa was denied and i was unable to attend. My husband of course was angry and couldn't understand why his government would say no. My husband is a good man, does everything by law and pays all his taxes - no so much as even a little white lie. My husband attended his parents celebration without me, despite being extremely upset and angry. He and I both have visited the immigration web-site and get overwhelmed by the jargon used. We just don't know where to start. Permanent Visa, Immigrant Visa, Green Card, K-3? Which one do we petition for? what is the cost for this? we don't have a lot of money - and most lawyers want thousands of dollars for their services - not something we have. Suggestions? ideas? more
Voting Question: What are the requirement while applying for PIO card from India for marriage registered in USA?
My wife is a US citizen and I am an Indian citizen.We both are living in India and our marriage is registered in state of Colorado, USA. We met in India but got married in US six months ago and then came back to India. My wife returned on her valid business visa from Indian government. With all the changes happening in business visas, I am looking at applying for her PIO card. We tried to register our marriage at the registrar office in Delhi but they declined to register stating a marriage solemnized in US cannot be registered in India. In order to apply for her PIO card, can I just submit my US marriage license? What other information would I require? We do not wish to remarry in India as it would be a legal problem with two registered marriages. Please help. more
Resolved Question: What am I missing here about more government takeover?
Obama now wants to put more regulations on companies that may or may not hurt the economy if they fail. He says he wants to stop this greed that is running rampant among businesses. Okay I get that. However, if you buy a home you can't afford, who's fault is that? If you can't control your own spending and continue to use Credit Cards, who's fault is that? If your Credit Card Continues to rape you in interest and fees yet you keep it, who's fault is that? If your company goes bankrupt because your union has to many high demands, who's fault is that? If you signed a contract without reading it, who's fault is that? Lastly, I do agree that some companies can be greedy and will do everything they can to sell you something. But if YOU signed a CONTRACT for a home that was to big for YOUR INCOME but you wanted it. Does that not make you greedy too? Wouldn't a high dose of personal responsibility solve most everything without this bigger government takeover?fangtaiyang, Good point. However, why are contract so difficult today? I contend that it is because of the sue happy people who will sue over hot coffee. Thus creating a contract that covers ever single aspect in legal terms to protect the company. That and political correctness. more
