Internet’s influence on business studied
Called Over Currents, the survey is designed to provide an understanding about how business, government, academic and non-profit organizations view and use the web in terms of productivity and innovation, organization president Tim Outhit said.
In Nova Scotia, 69 per cent of adults aged 18 and over use the Internet for personal purposes, according to data from the Statistics Canada 2007 Canadian Internet Use Survey. This is below the national average of 73 per cent.
"The Internet is playing a bigger role in our daily personal lives, but to what extent are businesses, government and educational institutions using the web? That’s something we’re determined to find out," said Mr. Outhit.
"Now is the time to take advantage of new web technologies to improve our province’s productivity," said Giles Crouch of Intevix, who designed the Over Currents survey. more
Lakeville selectmen divided on business zoning plan
The proposal, which is scheduled to appear on a fall special town meeting, would add small scale businesses in otherwise residential zones to support nearby residents. The areas being considered for the zone include Main and Bedford streets.
Reacting to the Master Plan Subcommittee's review of the plan, Selectwoman Nancy Yeatts said she opposes it.
“More and more as I look at this, I don't like it," she said. “We've been designing where we want our businesses to be. I don't want to take away this town's rural character. This could lead to small businesses all over town."
Selectman Derek Maksy said that is why small areas are being targeted to begin with. Town administrator Rita Garbitt said the feeling is this move would keep the town's rural character as the demand for business properties increases. more
Sick at Work: Paid leave is a dream for many workers, and
Rosa L. DeLauro, D-Conn., have introduced a bill, the Healthy Families Act, which would require businesses with 15 or more employees to give workers at least seven paid sick days each year.
"The public supports it," said Ruth Milkman, a professor of sociology at the University of California, Los Angeles, and the director of the Institute for Research on Labor and Employment who has studied the proposed laws. "In San Francisco, the law was so popular that the people who were opposed to it didn't even mount a challenge. Paid sick time is a human need that is self-evident."
Kathleen Martinez, 43, is typical of the kind of worker who is most likely to lack paid sick days. The Antioch, Calif., woman works part time at two low-paying jobs, one as a pizza cook at a grocery store and another at a restaurant. more

The power solutions segment saw sales rise 36 percent mainly because of higher unit prices resulting from an increase in the price of lead.
