Mike Copeland's Business Notebook: Magazine praises Cameron Park's trails

Waco got a nice plug in the March issue of Bike magazine.

Cameron Park was highlighted in its state-by-state guide to "50 incredible trails." It said cooperation between the city and local riders has created a great place to enjoy the sport.

Edwards as guest speaker

Just a reminder that Lea Ann Edwards, wife of U.S. Rep. Chet Edwards, D-Waco, will be the featured speaker at a Cen-Tex African American Chamber of Commerce event scheduled Saturday.

The business conference and champagne reception is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Ridgewood Country Club.

Tickets to the conference and her talk cost $50 in advance, $35 for chamber members and $75 at the door.

16 dead as Midwest faces rising rivers; Chicago could get 23 cm of snow

FENTON, Mo. - Americans in the flood-weary Midwest are fighting to save their homes and businesses from rivers spilling over their banks after rainstorms blamed for at least 16 deaths moved through the region.

Thousands of people from Arkansas through Ohio are staying in shelters or with relatives as flood waters lap against their homes.

Major Byron Medloch of the Salvation Army says 1,000 people displaced by the Meramec River in eastern Missouri are being housed in shelters.

Another 1,000 are in shelters near Poplar Bluff in far southeast Missouri, where the surging Black River breached several levees.

Medloch says many are tired and frustrated because "they can't get back into their homes."
