Bowlers Would Like Developers To Spare Bowling Alley In Ballard

After a half-century of business, one of the citys last remaining bowling alleys is just days away from shutting down.

Two-thousand people bowl each week at Seattles Sunset Bowl and some of those regulars are circulating a petition to save the bowling alley before its handed over to developers next month, reports KIRO 7 reporter Audra Schroeder.

Sunset Bowl is a Ballard institution. For 51 years its been a gathering place for friends and families, where the beer flows, birthdays are celebrated and bowling balls roll 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

"It's something that is more valuable than just the price of land," said bowler Nick Fraser.

This landmark has been sold and will close its doors at the end of the month to make way for luxury apartments. more

Business Casual Rule No. 1: No Sweats

Everyone thinks they know what the term "business casual" means (Button-downs and khakis? Check.), but some of us clearly could use a refresher course. Consider this reader question:"I work in the administrative offices of an industrial company. The dress code is 'business casual,' but that turns into jeans and product-sponsored polo shirts or even product-sponsored T-shirts and sweat shirts. (Our chief executive officer, vice president and heads of human resources and accounting all dress in that manner.)"When I showed up in slacks, heels and a sweater my first day, I got looked at as though I were from Mars. I would like to dress up a little more for work, but anything too far from the jeans-and-polo look would make me stick out like a sore thumb. Any suggestions?"My immediate suggestions center on the other members of your office. more

Rising Levels Bringing Business, Recreation to Lake Martin

When the Boland family made their trek to Lake Martin from Peachtree City, Georgia last summer, they could barely get their boat in the water.

"We looked outside and it was all muddy," explained Kaleigh Boland.

Now, it's a different story out on the lake. Water levels rose from record lows, up nearly 14 feet from the worst stages of the drought.

It's enough for boats to make a comeback.

"It's wonderful. You can barely see shoreline, so it's nice," said Kristen Boland.

The water's a welcome sight for marinas as well. With boat sales and service hit hard by last year's dry spell, the much needed rain--along with help from Alabama Power officials--brings business back by storm.

"We've had some good rains, but I've been here eight years, and I've never seen the water this high this early, so things are good," explained Justin Shields, a salesman for Singleton Marine Group. more

Business confidence in Singapore dives

Singapore - Business confidence in Singapore has slumped to its lowest level since the end of 2004, according to a survey Monday. While sales and profit figures were largely unchanged in the last three months of 2007, prospects have fallen sharply for the next six months, The Business Times and SIM University poll revealed.

The survey showed that the business prospects net balance - or difference between the percentage of optimistic and pessimistic companies - fell to 20 per cent from 39 per cent.

"The firms may be overly pessimistic because of the grim prospects in the US economy, accompanying volatile and weak stock markets and rising oil prices," said Chow Kit Boey, director of the quarterly survey of 128 companies.

Some 71 per cent of the firms have overseas business. more

Bills would shift Enterprise Florida focus to marine industry

Feeling slighted by Florida's economic development arm, marine industry groups are supporting bills that would make them a priority in business retention, recruitment and incentives.

Identical bills were filed in the state House and Senate that would create a Recreational Marine Business Retention Program within Enterprise Florida. It would work to ease marine business development permitting, promoting recreational water access and would declare marine businesses eligible for Qualified Target Industry (QTI) job growth incentives.

But officials at the state-funded nonprofit oppose the measure.

"We have target industries that are more likely going to bring us the type of sophisticated jobs we need to be competitive and the marine industry doesn't fall within that category," Enterprise Florida spokesman Stuart Doyle said. more
