FCC approves satellite radio merger in 3-2 vote
Tate had insisted that the companies settle charges that they violated FCC rules before she would approve the deal. The companies agreed this week to pay $19.7 million to the U.S. Treasury for violations related to radio receivers and ground-based signal repeaters.
FCC Chairman Kevin Martin confirmed the final vote Friday night.
"I think it's going to be, in the end, a good thing for consumers and be in the public interest," Martin told The Associated Press. "Consumers will enjoy a variety of programming at reduced prices and more diversified programming choices."
Subscribers will not have to buy new radios to receive a mix of programming from both services, according to the companies. But if they want to pursue a special pay-per-channel a la carte option, they will need new sets. more

Autonomy technology is increasingly used by financial and government institutions for long-term management and eDiscovery of their BlackBerry communications. more
Allstate once again suspended in Florida
16 after Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty halted a hearing into its reinsurance program, relationships with risk modeling companies, insurance rating organizations and insurance trade associations. Allstate appealed the suspension to the courts, asserting the commissioner exceeded his authority. The court stayed the suspension until it could consider the issue, but lifted the stay, ruling on April 4 that the commissioner did not exceed his authority to suspend Allstate's licenses.
Allstate then released about 150,000 pages of documents related to a review of its claim practices in the 1990s on its Web site, though it said it still believes the documents contain trade secrets. The OIR has not commented on the documents.
