Sidney Craig, 76; entrepreneur helped build Jenny Craig business

About 1970 Craig bought a stake in Body Contour, a diet and fitness center, and expanded the business with a site in New Orleans. There he met his future wife.

She became the company's national director of operations before they married in 1979.

The couple sold their interest in Body Contour in 1982. It had grown to include 200 centers in the U.S. The following year they opened their first Jenny Craig center in Melbourne, Australia, and expanded to the U.S. market in 1985. The company went public in 1991. The Craigs sold their business to Nestle in 2006 for a reported $600 million. At the time of the sale, more than 4 million dieters had signed up for their program, according to the company.

In recent years Craig and his wife made major contributions to California universities, including $10.5 million to the University of San Diego in 1996 for a new fitness center called the Jenny Craig Pavilion. more

• Island business getting back on their feet

South Padre Island businesses are trying to get back on their feet after Hurricane Dolly hit the Rio Grande Valley.

Officials restored some power and opened the Queen Isabella Memorial Causeway to non-residents on Tuesday.

Businesses were already rolling out the welcome mat and hoping to make up for a big loss in business.

Dolly hit right in the middle of tourism season.

Some businesses like Louie's remain closed.

Their next-door neighbor Amberjacks is open but running on generator power.

Manager Rich Furnari said Amberjacks is trying to get back to pre-Dolly conditions but extended their hours because they're one of the few businesses actually opened.

"We're not ready to service everybody the way we want to service them but we do have a full menu so whoever does come through the door we'll be able to take care of them," he said. more

State sales tax holiday this weekend [17 hrs ago]

Joanne Stoy of the Norman Chamber of Commerce said Norman businesses would volunteer to participate in a tax-free weekend. Shoppers at participating stores were given discounts that were the equivalent of sales tax rates. "The Norman Retail Trade Committee started it to keep people from going to Texas," Stoy said. "Businesses would be listed on our Chamber Web site, and people got used to going there to see who was participating." Scores of businesses signed up, and the event became popular in Norman. Now that the Legislature has mandated the sales tax holiday statewide, the Norman tax-free weekend no longer generates the local buzz it once did. Still, Stoy said, shoppers are free to go wherever they want to take advantage of the three-day savings event. For more information on the sales tax holiday, call the Norman Chamber of Commerce at 321-7260 or the Oklahoma Tax Commission at 521-3160, or consult their Web sites at www.norman ok.org or www.tax.ok.gov, respectively. more
