Doyle signs Great Lakes Compact The Business Journal of Milwaukee
Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle Tuesday signed the Great Lakes Compact, a bipartisan agreement that's expected to protect, preserve and improve the Great Lakes.
With Doyle's signature, Wisconsin becomes the fifth of eight Great Lakes states to pass the water compact. Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania must still pass the compact and then the U.S. Congress has to ratify it.
The compact, Doyle says, creates unprecedented protections for the Great Lakes and ensures their continued availability for regional economic growth. It bans long-distance diversions and provides a framework for ensuring sustainable water use in the Great Lakes basin.
The compact maintains each governor's veto power, a once-contentious issue in Wisconsin, while establishing defined criteria against which project decisions or vetoes must be based. more
Best Gift Card for Grads: A Financial Planner's Business Card
That is why, instead of a gift card, MainStreet suggests you consider passing along the business card of a financial planner instead. A session with a financial professional can help guide the former student through their first budget , and unlike from a parent, the advice given is likely to be listened to. Let's say the former pupil is offered a job at investment firm Goldman Sachs GS making $70,000. A young graduate might conjure up numerous ways to spend $70,000, not fully understanding that the amount is not their take home pay. If you're planning to reside in Atlanta, Georgia after college, where state income taxes is about 6% of your income, then $4,200 will go to the state of Georgia. That doesn't sound like too much money. But, before you go off on that shopping trip, keep in mind more than $17,000 may go to the federal government. more
Dickinson leaving Birmingham Business Journal
Birmingham Business Journal Publisher Melanie Dickinson is leaving the newspaper June 16 to become publisher of the South Florida Business Journal.
Both publications are owned by American City Business Journals, the nation's leading publisher of local business newspapers. The company has not yet named a new publisher for the Birmingham Business Journal.
Dickinson, 40, was advertising director of the BBJ from 1999 until she was named publisher in 2003. She was raised in the Miami area and still has family in South Florida.
"Birmingham will always be a very special place to me," she said. "It's truly become my home. This is a wonderful community. My children were born here, and I've made many lifelong friends."
In South Florida, Dickinson is replacing veteran Publisher Gary Press, who was named publisher of American City Business Journals' NASCAR publications. more
Simon Calder: The man whose business is travel
Bright and lucrative: that's the future for transatlantic business-class-only flights, despite the collapse of two such airlines in four months. Just ask Silverjet and British Airways. BA is finessing its plans for a twice-daily link between London City airport and New York. Meanwhile, Silverjet is the last man standing after a bloody business-class-only war of attrition that began two-and-a-half years ago. The surviving airline is – according to its founder, Lawrence Hunt, "almost profitable".
In November 2005, the American carriers Eos and MAXjet launched competing services between Stansted and New York. Both aimed to deliver a kind of "son of Concorde" – an exclusive, business-class-only service. And both kitted out their Boeings to carry only a fraction of the usual capacity. more
