Looking at the big picture
Decaying streets with huge potholes have led some businesses to consider forming a neighborhood improvement district. The district would work with the city and county to repair Leonard Road, Easton Road and Whitaker Road.
“They're all but shot and need to be replaced," said Dan Hausman, Buchanan County's Eastern District commissioner.
The congested intersection at U.S. Highway 169 South and Interstate 29 is being targeted by the Missouri Department of Transportation. That project, however, is not likely to receive funding for several years.
The city of St. Joseph already has begun rebuilding the north section of 48th Terrace on the east side of the industrial park.
Businesses in the area were surprised to learn their property taxes don't go toward road improvements, said Cyndra Lorey, executive director of business relations and development for the St. more

TINA VITAL, OIL ANALYST, STANDARD & POOR'S: We expect their refining and marketing businesses to hold up, due to the fact that they are large, efficient processors of crude. And they can also handle the cost advantage to heavy sour blends.
MILLER: Oppenheimer's Gheit says the other big issue facing major oil companies is government interference including the possibility of a windfall profit tax in the U.S.
GHEIT: As higher oil price push earnings to record levels, governments, including our own and others, they can be greedy. They want to balance their budgets. They want to do a lot of things, so guess what? The most convenient things is to dip their hand in the pocket of oil companies.
MILLER: These concerns help explain why oil stocks have not done well this year, despite record profits. more
Unions call for Business Secretary John Hutton's head after 'fall-out'
Gordon Brown is coming under pressure from the unions to remove John Hutton from his post as Business Secretary, The Times has learnt.
Union leaders say there has been a complete breakdown in relations with the leading Blairite minister and are demanding his scalp in an autumn reshuffle.
Mr Hutton's future is set to become a trial of strength for the Prime Minister after colleagues and business organisations made it clear that they would be unhappy at his removal in such circumstances.
However, one senior trade union official said: "Some of the trade unions can't sit in the same room as Hutton. There has been an absolute breakdown in relations."

The integration of the various companies that have been acquired in the previous year is well on course. The different organisations are ready for a further growth, mainly autonomous, that will be realised in the coming six months. Also, costs will be incurred in the coming months to realise geographical growth in 2009, possibly through acquisitions.
Michiel Alting von Geusau: "Presently, we process over one million transactions per month for our customers. These transactions consist of realised orders through our web solutions, successfully processed payments by end consumers and shipped orders for our customers. We expect the number of transactions that we process to grow further in the coming years."
As most deliveries by Technology company IAI are scheduled for the second half-year 2008, this has resulted in a lower revenue and operating profit for the first half-year. more
'Twilight' fans pump new blood into Forks, Wash.
In response, local businesses have creaked from their offseason coffins, aiming for a stake in the craze. Sully's Burgers sold 800 "Bella Burgers" in three months, and the Forks Subway added a "Twilight Special" sandwich. Twilight-themed T-shirts read "I Was Bitten in Forks, WA" at main-street businesses that, like bookstores across the country, are planning midnight release parties for Breaking Dawn.
Last year, Mayor Reed declared Sept. 13 Bella's fictional birthday Stephenie Meyer Day, and the city celebrated with cake and a Bella look-alike contest. Gurling hopes to add a bonfire and Native American wolf dance to the event this year; a blood drive is also possible. This year should be even better, as 100-plus members of TwilightMoms.com, a website dedicated to older fans, have already booked nearly all of Forks' Dew Drop Inn for that weekend. moreLatest Business Greeting Cards News

Resolved Question: Is this what Barack Obama has planned for us?
The Dinner Roll .. Once upon a time I was invited to the White House for a private dinner with the President. I am a respected businessman, with a factory that produces memory chips for computers and portable electronics. There was some talk that my industry was being scrutinized by the administration, but I paid it no mind. I live in a FREE country. There's nothing that the government can do to me if I've broken no laws. My wealth was EARNED honestly, and an invitation to dinner with an American President is an honor. I checked my coat, was greeted by the Chief of Staff, and joined the President in a yellow dining room. We sat across from each other at a table draped in white linen. The Great Seal was embossed on the china. Uniformed staff served our dinner. The meal was served, and I was startled when my waiter suddenly reached out, plucked a dinner roll off my plate and began nibbling it as he walked back to the kitchen.. "Sorry 'bout that," said the President. "Andrew is very hungry." "I don't appreciate..." I began, but as I looked into the calm brown eyes across from me, I felt immediately guilty and petty. It was just a dinner roll. "Of course," I concluded, and reached for my glass. Before I could, however, another waiter reached forward, took the glass away and swallowed the wine in a single gulp. "And his brother, Eric, is very thirsty," said the President. I didn't say anything. The President is testing my compassion, I thought. I withheld my comments and decided to play along. I don't want to seem unkind.. My plate was whisked away before I had tasted a bite. "Eric's children are also quite hungry." With a lurch, I crashed to the floor. My chair had been pulled out from under me. I stood, brushing myself off angrily, and watched as it was carried from the room. And their grandmother can't stand for long." I excused myself, smiling outwardly, but inside feeling like a fool. Obviously I had been invited to the White House to be sport for some game. I reached for my coat, to find that it had been taken. I turned back to the President. "Their grandfather doesn't like the cold." I wanted to shout, "that was my coat!" But again, I looked at the placid smiling face of my host and decided I was being a poor sport. I spread my hands helplessly and chuckled. Then I felt my hip pocket and realized my wallet was gone. I excused myself and walked to a phone on an elegant side table. I learned shortly that my credit cards had been maxed out, my bank accounts emptied, my retirement and equity portfolios had vanished, and my wife had been thrown out of our home. Apparently, the waiters and their families were moving in. The President hadn't moved or spoken as I learned all this, but finally I lowered the phone into its cradle and turned to face him. "Andrew's whole family has made bad financial decisions. They haven't planned for retirement and they need a house. They recently defaulted on a subprime mortgage. I told them they could have your home. They need it more than you do." My hands were shaking. I felt faint I stumbled back to the table and knelt on the floor. The President cheerfully cut his meat, ate his steak, and drank his wine. I lowered my eyes and stared at the small grey circles on the tablecloth that were water drops. "By the way," he added, "I have just signed an Executive Order nationalizing your factories. I'm firing you as head of your business. I'll be operating the firm now for the benefit of all mankind. There's a whole bunch of Erics and Andrews out there and they can't come to you for jobs groveling like beggars...we need to spread YOUR wealth around..." I looked up. The President dropped his spoon into the empty ramekin which had been his crème Brule. He drained the last drops of his wine. As the table was cleared, he lit a cigarette and leaned back in his chair. He stared at me. I clung to the edge of the table as if it were a ledge and I were a man hanging over an abyss. I thought of the years behind me, of the life I had lived. The life I had earned with a lifetime of work, risk and struggle. Why was I punished? How had I allowed it to be taken? What game had I played and lost? I looked across the table and noticed with some surprise that there was no game board between us. What had I done wrong? As if answering the unspoken thought, President Obama suddenly cocked his head, locked his empty eyes to mine, and bared a million teeth, chuckling wryly as he folded his hands. "You should have stopped me at the dinner roll," he said. moreResolved Question: Could I be a potential victim of Identity theft?
I did some freelance writing for a greeting card company and they selected one of my ideas for publication. In order to receive payment, they want me to fill out a W-9 form (which will include my social security number) and either email or fax it back to them. They appear to be a legitimate company, as they have a website that shows their cards and even a section of the website that asks for freelance submissions. Do you think this sounds like a scam? Besides contacting the Better Business Bureau, is there anything I can do? moreResolved Question: I need help naming my small business?

I've been making simple handmade greeting cards using my own artwork as well as store-bought embellishments and papers. (I also use fonts I've downloaded online, but only free ware fonts). I'm not making the money I used to and when a stranger brought to my attention that my cards were actually pretty good, i started thinking of selling these cards. I'm not sure how to go about this though. I dont want to get sued for using the embellishments, although the ideas are all my own. Also, if i'm going to sell them, how do i copyright my own work and get a business set up? moreResolved Question: do you think this email will get my cellphone service providers attention?
my cellphone provider has been very stingy lately and I'm just wondering after they recive this email do you think they'll fix my problems? *I've edited out all the mistakes :), oh and I tried to sound more intellegent than the ppl that usually call these companies screaming* I'm very angry and fed up with not only my horrible service, but also my handset that NEVER works properly. In september of 2009 I purchased from the Boost website the i776w handset and buy a $50 reboost card every month for my unlimited service. My many problems have not only been fustrating but have been interfering with my every day life. Often times I will flip open my handset and all the letters and numbers on the screne will be jumbled around and impossible to read. This will happen on no matter what kind of charge my handset has. It is resolved by turning the handset off, then turning it on again. Another issue is that while in the middle of performing a task on my handset, the screne will turn to bright white and the handset will shut down, and start up again on its own, still on a full battery. Another problem I have is with text messeging. I will be in the middle of multiple text conversations when suddenly I will not recieve any of the messeges that are sent to me. A few more problems I have with text messeging are that even when I'm in a full service area my phone will fail to send simple messeges containing only text multiple times. Moving onto phone calls. I almost never use my handset for phone calls because while I'm talking to another person the phone will suddenly cut out making it unable to hear the person. It will do this so frequently that I am unable to call anyone from my handset, still on a full charge. I'd like to bring to your attention that NONE of these problems are due to the ammount of battery the handset has, or what area I am in, they occur at ANY time. My last problem for now is that it is during your hours of opperation and I have called ALL of the numbers your website provides to contact a costumer service representative, only to be greeted by an automated service, that never gets me where I want. An emal communication with such extensive problems with my service, is the last route I wish to take. For the price of this brand new i776w handset, I certianly expected much better service than I recieve. If I am not contacted by an actual representative and my issues go unresolved I will gladly take my business elsewhere. Thank you for your time, Amanda Moore. moreResolved Question: need a new printer - inkjet or color laser all in one?
I need a new printer, and have been very frustrated with inkjet printers so far, because the ink dries up in them, clogging the nozzles over time. I think part of the problem is that I go long periods of time without printing anything. I do print a lot, but only sporadically. I need an all in one, because my space is extremely limited, and I do like the photocopying feature anyhow. When I read reviews on home office color lasers, some people really run them down, but it always seems as if they are comparing them to their $5000 machines they use at work, so I don't know if the printers are junk, or these people are being unfair about their expectations for a $200 - $300 machine. I don't print photos at home, but I do like to use color making greeting cards and business cards & signs etc. I know for a home machine, the price per page of printing might not be much lower than inkjet because they get you on the toner cartridges, but I am hoping that having so much less wasted ink might make it worth it. Anyway, advice would be appreciated! I think I would prefer a laser, for reliability, but if there are good reasons not to get an inexpensive home model, please tell me. Thanks! moreResolved Question: Greeting card software?

Here in the US it's becoming more and more popular to use the generic "Happy Holidays" as a greeting instead of the traditional "Merry Christmas" (God forbid someone is offended by a nice greeting like that!). People and especially businesses send "Holiday cards" and companies have "Holiday parties" when he all know very well it's really a Christmas party!! Is Australia as bad as the US as far as Xmas is concerned? For me, Christmas has always been a secular holiday -- a time of goodwill, of feeling the "Christmas spirit" which has absolutely nothing to do with religion! Pisses me off that we can't say anything because someone might be offended! I still say Merry Christmas and send Christmas card (cute Snoopy ones -- nothing to do with religion!). Yesterday I met with a representative of a home renovator (he claimed he was the owner) to discuss our plans to replace our kitchen. 1) he was late for the appointment, his office called at the time of the appointment to say he would be delayed about 20 minutes. He arrived 45 minutes later 2) I observed him pull into our driveway, but instead of getting out of the car and coming to the door, he sat out in the driveway talking on the phone for another 10m minutes. When I saw him finally get out of the car and move toward the front door, I went to greet him, but he remained at the foot of my door step still on the phone for another 10 minutes, which I found rather annoying. Finally he came up to the door and knocked which I further found annoying since I had already given up on greeting him at the door, and had gone back to my own business, but I dropped what I was doing and let him in to proceed with the meeting He apologized for being late, I said that it didn't bode well with me that he come more than 45 minutes late for a first meeting. He said something about at least he had his office call to let me know. I thought that calling at the time of the meeting is bad enough but to still be later than your new ETA isn't right either, I was mad but I dropped it. So we went into the kitchen, exchanged some ideas, he gave me a quote based on what we discussed, it seemed pretty fair to me, but my wife wasn't there so I asked for another meeting at a time than she could be there. We agreed on this comming Sunday morning at 10:00a. Now I want to cancel the meeting and forget about hiring him. I feel that part of the reason for this is because I was angry at him for being late, but I was EXTREMELY put off about what he had to say when I brought up the subject of references. In a nutshell he said he would provide me with references if it meant the difference between getting the job or not, but he hated to have his good customers bothered with reference calls. Please understand, he went on quite a bit on this subject giving examples to support his threory that references are a bad idea. I got the sence that it was as if he was trying to beat out a raging fire. Again I let it drop, and at the end of the day he walked out the door, and I had only his business card in my hand. No written quote, no references. BTW, I did a quick check at the local BBB website and found no data on his company name. They have no complaints registered withing the last 36 months, but they are not members either. The thing is, in the past I have done all of the renovations on my own, but I was younger then. (I will be 59 this January 2010). I completely renovated our main floor bathroom about three years ago. I didn't find it particularly challenging. The hard part was deciding on the tiles for the floors, and the walls, and I had the entire project finished in about 30 days start to finish. But this time our plans include some skylights, and changing the staircase to the basement. These are things I haven't done before, plus I have lost some of the fire in my gut that drives me on these tasks. But to make matters worse, this guy I spoke to yesterday said that they don't do skylights (they do everything else) plus he tried to talk me out of the changes to the staircase, I think he didn't want to take on that work either. I have spoken to two other renovators, but this latest guy is the first one I gave any serious consideration to. But now I am thinking I would rather just do it myself, and hire someone else to come in and do the things I can't manage on my own. I wonder if I am just getting cold feet on hiring someone, and putting the whole project in their hands. I hear so many horror stories about projects gone wrong, or they take all the money but don't finish the job. I have so little to go on without references from this guy, and so far everyone I have called have failed to provide me with a single reference. Any thoughts, opinions, comments, personal experience is welcome. Thanks in advance. moreResolved Question: How do I get a greeting card business started?

Dinner with Obama Once upon a time, I was invited to the White House for a private dinner with the President. The meal was served, and I was startled when my waiter suddenly reached out, plucked a dinner roll off my plate, and began nibbling it as he walked back to the kitchen. "Sorry about that," said the President. "Andrew is very hungry." "I don't appreciate..." I began, but as I looked into the calm brown eyes across from me, I felt immediately guilty and petty.. It was just a dinner roll. "Of course," I concluded, and reached for my glass. Before I could, however, another waiter reached forward, took the glass away and swallowed the wine in a single gulp. "And his brother Eric is very thirsty." said the President. I didn't say anything. The President is testing my compassion, I thought. I will play along. I don't want to seem unkind. My plate was whisked away before I had tasted a bite. "Eric's children are also quite hungry." With a lurch, I crashed to the floor. My chair had been pulled out from under me. I stood, brushing myself off angrily, and watched as it was carried from the room. "And their grandmother can't stand for long." I excused myself, smiling outwardly, but inside feeling like a fool. Obviously I had been invited to the White House to be sport for some game. I reached for my coat, to find that it had been taken. I turned back to the President. "Their grandfather doesn't like the cold." I wanted to shout - that was my coat! But again, I looked at the placid smiling face of my host and decided I was being a poor sport. I spread my hands helplessly and chuckled.. They haven't planned for retirement, and they need a house. They recently defaulted on a subprime mortgage. I told them they could have your home. They need it more than you do." My hands were shaking. I felt faint. I stumbled back to the table and knelt on the floor. The President cheerfully cut his meat, ate his steak and drank his wine. I lowered my eyes and stared at the small grey circles on the tablecloth that were water drops. "By the way," He added, "I have just signed an Executive Order nationalizing your factories. I'm firing you as head of your business. I'll be operating the firm now for the benefit of all mankind. There's a whole bunch of Eric's and Andrews out there and they can't come to you for jobs groveling like beggars." I looked up. The President dropped his spoon into the empty ramekin which had been his crème Brule. He drained the last drops of his wine. As the table was cleared, he lit a cigarette and leaned back in his chair. He stared at me. I clung to the edge of the table as if were a ledge and I were a man hanging over an abyss. As if answering the unspoken thought, the President suddenly cocked his head, locked his empty eyes to mine, and bared a million teeth, chuckling wryly as he folded his hands. "You should have stopped me at the dinner roll," he said. Wake up, America ! moreVoting Question: How to start a homemade greeting card business?

Ok so I originally started just with the idea of selling bracelets. I love making bracelets from beads I get at like Michaels or Joan Fabrics. I am VERY good with computers and was hoping to make a website for myself as well. But, I also thought about selling some other things. I can scrapbook as well, and was considering making greeting/birthday/wedding cards. I have a few questions, but I think my Dad can answer those when I present the idea to him (and please don't think when I say I haven't asked him yet that I'm planning on sneaking it around him lol...because that's just not gonna happen! xD). But my one MAJOR question, is how exactly do people sell their crafts? Do they sell them by the singles, and just whoever sees it gets it? Do they take requests (like specific colors/types of beads)? Or do they just make the same bracelets over and over? I was thinking maybe I could just make them in singles and sell them and also allow people to request their own colors, it just might cost an extra dollar and take me a little longer since it won't already be made. Suggestions? Also any suggestions on starting an online business? I want to start with a free hosting website, like Spruz, but how exactly does the whole money thing work? Thanks so much! ^-^ moreResolved Question: Where can I find greeting card displays?
