PLDT elects Jollibee chair in board, declares cash dividend

Caktiong was cited as the World Entrepreneur of the Year in 2004 in an Ernst & Young-sponsored global award. He also sits as an independent director of First Gen, a power generation company.

He replaced long time PLDT and Metro Pacific lawyer, Rausa-Chan who has been a PLDT director since March 2007. Rausa-Chan was also the
senior vice president for corporate affairs and legal services, and the general counsel and corporate secretary of PLDT.

Meantime, the PLDT board also declared P12.42 million cash dividends out of the unrestricted retained earnings as of December 31, 2007.

Shareholders with series A, I, R, W, AA, and BB shares listed in the exchange as of July 31 will receive P1 per share by August 29, 2008.

Child prostitution, & prevention

Shirley Franklin, the mayor of Atlanta, has changed that through advertisements underscoring the damage that these men do to their communities.

The city is also considering legislation under which first-time offenders on adult prostitution charges will be required to attend classes where they would learn about the broader social harm associated with their activities. Restitution and community service may be required.

Georgia's state budget shortfall and the cuts called for by the governor make funding for such initiatives difficult.

A disturbing new development is the proliferation of local ordinances that go beyond the reporting requirements of legislation like Megan's Law by restricting where sex offenders may live. more

US Presidential candidates in China — the personal and the political

Obama's estranged half-brother, Mark Ndesandjo, is an entrepreneur who has been living in Shenzhen with a Chinese girlfriend for several years. Neither man seems particularly eager to talk to the press about the others' existence, but reports indicate Ndesandjo has been promoting cheap exports with his consulting business, Worldnexus. The tie is a potential political bombshell for Obama in a country deeply fearful of what China's inexpensive goods mean for jobs at home.

IHB marketing efforts bearing fruit

This resulted in increased exposure for IHB and its members through advertisements for these events and at the events themselves.

In recent times, the Group has paid a lot of attention to online marketing, placing homepage and text link ads on various websites including Caribbean360degrees.com.

They also renewed contracts with numerous sites such as TotallyBarbados.com and are in the process of negotiating contracts with other such sites.

Since the launch of the IHB website in 2003, online bookings have increased thus providing increased revenue for members. In 2007 this medium generated online bookings to the tune of just under $180 000 and they are optimistic that this will be surpassed in 2008.

Early in his presentation, the Chairman stated that the Group should not be daunted by the sub par projections for the remainder of the year, but should instead implement new initiatives to capture the local and regional markets. more

Business Christmas Cards Printing Questions asked

Resolved Question: Friend started a small business - what to get him as a (late) Christmas gift?

My friend, whom I've known for about 8 months, started a business earlier this year. We're exchanging gifts when I see him next week but I've not shopped for him yet. What kind of a gift would you as a business owner appreciate / consider thoughtful? I considered buying him a bestselling sales/marketing book but might steer away from that since his mom usually gets him books too. Then I thought I would get a T shirt printed with his company logo on it to give to him (he just came up with his logo design but hasn't implemented yet) but since I don't think it is either copyrighted or trademarked just yet, I might be treading dangerous waters here. Then I thought of a silver-plated business card holder engraved with his initials on it - what do you think? What else can I tell you about him to help you...he's in his late twenties, loves his sports car, likes coaching little league, loves watching basketball and football.....what would you recommend based on what I've told you? My budget is $30-50. Any help appreciated. Thank you. more

Resolved Question: How much to charge for a holiday photo session.?

I'm just starting in the photography buisness, and I have been asked by several couples and families to shoot their holiday photos for their Christmas card, etc. I will most likely not be printing any out, just giving them the cd. It will most likely be one location and the shoot will last anywhere from 30 mins to an hour. I don't want to overcharge being new in the business but I don't want to sell myself short. Thanks for your answers! more

Resolved Question: How would you best describe this business owner?

A family run printing company of 10 employees operates for 38 years with revenues of $2 million, survives through all the ups and downs, even in the bad economy. One of the 2 owners dies and the other is left with no choice but to sell the company. It's sold to a young businessman with no experience, he teams up with a printing franchise and they start telling him what to do. Within 3 months, the main pressman/mechanic father of 2, is laid off 2 weeks before Christmas on the basis on lack of work. Another well qualified employee is shifted into his position, and within a month, that employee too is laid off just a week before his vacation. Another employee with 20 years is left to run the Bindery, the pressroom, and deliver to customers. He and the remaining employees have their health benefits cut with 1 day notice, violation by CT law. but only enforceable if employees had any outstanding health bills. Checks start bouncing on a regular basis. Owner buys 2 cats and lets them run loose in the shop. Owner gets divorce papers. Owner gets non rent payment notice on his condo. Owner owes 4 months business rent Owner doesn't pay movers of equipment Owner doesn't pay franchise fees. Owes back taxes. 3 credit cards denied. Non payment of various outside services. Then 20 year employee father of 4 is cut 1 day before fathers day again by claims of lack of work. This person also overseen the billing statements income, and knew about all the operating costs and minimums required, and saw the company was still in the black. 1 week later, a different printing company, part of the same franchise but not related to the owner of the above printing company goes out of business, and the 4 or 5 employees are farmed into the above printing company to fill the positions. 3 more of the original employees are cut to make room for these others. So besides the initial question. Anyone else have family operations switched to Corporate horror stories?Actually, the previous boss stayed on as salesman, and had agreements that none of his employees would be traded. Does that change anything. Yes it is life, but so are the consequences of axing the very the people who are responsible for the customer base as well. You know what I mean? It is dishonesty basically scumbaggish to do something like that in my opinion, and thankfully all the customers contacted agree and won't be doing business with the guy.Actually, the previous boss stayed on as salesman, and had agreements that none of his employees would be traded. Resolved Question: Would this idea for a christmas card offend you if you were jewish?

Hi we are a creative agency and are currently working on a season's greetings card. We have a couple of clients that are run by jewish business men/women that we get on with them and are quite pally with. I'm after a bit of feedback in particularly from jewish people, Christmas isn't obviously celebrated, so wanted to be as blunt as possible, have the cards printed with 'Merry Christmas' inside, scribbled out with a big marker pen and Hanukkah jotted down, with a follow up line something like "bespoke solutions, reaching all audiences & making your money go further" What would your first impressions be on something like this, would you see the funny side or would you be offended. Look forward to hearing your thoughtsAnd also, would a jewish person be offended purely receiving a christmas card?I'm just trying to bring a bit of a smile to it, as we are a creative agency I'm trying to avoid to boring seasons greetings/happy holidays, how about something like this: Happy... Resolved Question: Creating Holiday Cards: Tips? Design, Photography, Cost?

Hi, I just finished a graphic design program. I also own a petcare business. I would like to start a side business offering my petcare clients design work. Specifically, I would like to offer to design clients' holidays cards for friends and family. What is the best way to go about this? I am a decent photographer. I also am a decent designer. So, should I buy blank car stock and design and print out 3-4 templates of designs, each with an attached photograph taped in the middle? If I use a printing shop, they will charge me an arm and a leg to print only 4 samples. But I can't print a full bleed with printer at home, not to mention the quality wouldn't be great. Or do I just find cute pre-designed Christmas cards with a photo spot and only worry about taking the photograph? But I would assume that most clients would want a personalized message inside. And how much money could I really make if I didn't design it? But the outside printing would already be done, so that would save some money, maybe? So , what do you suggest? Has anyone done this on a small scale? I have 15 clients and I would guess that 7-8 of them will take me up on the holiday card design. I am assuming that each client will order 50-60 cards, at least. What do I charge? What is the most cost efficient way to do this?  more

Resolved Question: How do you act unbothered?..........?

My husband and I have a good marriage but he is very selfish, he buys all kinds of goodies. We own his own construction business, we own all of our equipment and the road tractor, we have 3: 4-wheelers, a bass boat, tons of property with animals, he has a 2008 GMC extended cab fully loaded and a 2008 Dodge fully loaded (his work truck), I have a lincoln Navigator, but this is not the point....he came from money so he has no concept of it. Every year he goes on these hunts he is big game hunter.. that cost between $1500 to $10,000. Things we do is always with his friends and what he wants to do. HE doesnt want to ever do anything with the boys and me. We have 4 boys and 1 girl. He never ever wants to participate in any family things with us, now if its his family, mom dad etc...he's there, but here is what I am just hurt over...my birthday came last week and he got me a card and gave me one of his new company hats that we just had printed up due to we ran out of the other ones and the UPS truck happened to have arrive right when I was pulling in the driveway...Yes, he does provide for me and the kids, our daughter is in Virginia going to college, we have a son that is a senior, twins in the 10th and one in the 4th. We have had a few talks not really directly about his big spending which it doesnt bother him. IT does me..I am very frugal. I dont spend money for nothing he is always gripping at me for being so tight. I dont like living like that...I mean yes we can afford things but I have no desire to spend money. In any case, at my birthday dinner that his mother cooked for me, all family there his grandparents, mom dad and my family, I turned 40 I thought he would had thrown me a huge party....in any case one of his brothers asked him what did he buy me and he said, a card, why, and he looked at me and said well if you ever want something you can just go buy it,,,that is always his answer, its like he puts no effort in me. I am so tired of him doing this to me..I always go way out for him and the kids, they are the same as he is, they have no care in the world and I am always the drama QUEEN as they all put it....But last Christmas he had me to go thru catalogs and pick out things I liked the whole time I was looking thru it I was crying and hurting...that isnt love....he bought me a pair of camoflauge pj's from gander mountain....i just am so sick of him being so incoinciderate..that is how he does me all the time. When he turned 40 6 years ago, I threw a HUGE party..I spent alot of time and effort not to mention $$$ on his party, he didnt even remember it was my day until the day before due to his mom called him to ask what he was doing for me..and she suggested she cook and he agreed....I AM SO HURT....I have a beautiful life. We have 5 very healthy children most are wonderful for the most part, we have a beautiful 8000 square foot home, we have 892.5 acres, we have horses and have a summer home in the mountains of North Carolina that was his grandpas old home place in the early 1900's, its not about money, but I am so miserable...I want him to do something just for me once in a while. I am sure if I went missing for 6 months no one would miss me until they realized they had no more groceries or needed their clothes washed...PLEASE HELP!!!!! what do I do to get my husband to remember me and do things for me too.....I dont mean to sound like a whine bag...I just want to feel wanted and needed...All the kids are crazy over thier dad, they think he hung the moon and so does all of his and my family, he came from a huge group of guy friends that all grew up together that he always hangs out with and drinks with....he doesnt even need me....Oh there are lots of women in our town and else where that would love and have tried to get their claws in him...but he says, not sure but he says he would never....I just want some advise....I keep my mouth mostly and never ever say anything, but when i do i get a deaf ear. So I just act like it doesnt bother me...I have spent many times driving around crying or hid in my upstairs guest bedroom crying..... married and miserable 23 years more
