Steel Partners, Shareholders Oust Aderans' Management (Update1)

It may be the first time a foreign fund has ousted management at a publicly traded Japanese company, said Hiroyuki Araki, director of mergers and acquisitions at Mirai Consulting Inc. in Tokyo. Global investors including Calpers, the biggest U.S. pension fund, have pressured Japanese executives to boost shareholder returns and increase transparency.

``Shareholders have put a brick through the window with a note attached: `Listen to your shareholders or find a new job,''' said Nicholas Smith, director of equity sales at HSBC Holdings Plc in Tokyo. ``This raises Japan's corporate governance to a whole new level, with even the CEO rejected. For years, even incompetence wasn't enough to get management removed.''

The outcome marks the first success in Steel Partners' five- year quest to force changes at Japanese companies. more

Local students going for gold

They are asking local businesses if they would like to be involved.

By making a donation they will be able to take part in the relay and receive their own torch to keep.

Organisers at the school say they already have about a dozen businesses interested in taking part and the number who get involved will determine the route taken to the school.

Once the torch relay arrives at the school there will be a mock opening ceremony and lighting of the flame.

According to organiser Bernie Sands, businesses can also bid to see who will have the honour of lighting the cauldron at the ceremony.

Then the games will begin.

It is an all day event with fun and games for all ages.

There will be special guests such as the "Queen", the "IOC president" and "Roy and HG" to bring a touch of the Olympic fever. more

Solutions from Kodak and IMDS Software, an Authorized Imaging Reseller, provide businesses with faster access to its information, giving overall marketing and business projects greater impact.

Business Cards Unique Questions asked

Resolved Question: I need a name for a Home Cake Decorating Business.?

Your Question I need a name for a Home Cake Decorating Business.? I have been making cakes for a year and a half or so. Lately people have been asking me for business cards to pass out as they have been asked by guests at their parties. Also, the only place I have my cakes available to see are flickr and facebook but only friends can see the facebook pics so i;d like to start a group or fan page. The only trouble is I don't really have a name. My email is cakesbystace but I really don't like that name. My name is Anastasia, or Stacey, but I don't necessarily need my name in it. Just want something unique and easy to remember. ANyone have any ideas??? I realize I have to check to see if the name I choose has already been registered here, in Saskatchewan Canada, but I don't even know where to start looking. Here's my flickr site to give you an idea of the kinds of cakes I do. Thanks! http://www.flickr.com/photos/40248840@N08/ more

Resolved Question: Does the Hobby Tax credit apply to me?

I am so confused on this....I do general crafts, scrap booking mostly, I make albums, notebooks, cards, I also re-make wood crafts like repaint and add decorations as well as paint. Anything crafty I do it. Recently I began to sell things, mainly by people seeing my creations after I have given them to someone and asking if they could buy one. My profits were minimal ($5-$20 a month at most) but now by word of mouth I have had several more requests than usual and I have begun painting the sale amount potentially could be higher. I have heard about the hobby tax but after reading it I am more confused than before. This has always been something I did to make fun unique albums of my family's life and to give unique gifts so now that people are actually interested in my stuff but no where near being able to start a business what does the hobby tax mean for me?Well, I get the point I called it the wrong name. Thanks. I did claim my income (wapping 150 bucks) from last year. And it is not a business, that much is common sense. I spend easily 3,000 a year on this so making $150 is a laughing matter. My issue which is what I said I don't understand what the entire "Hobby" deal is. If I happen to make money now and again from my hobby, I know and did claim my income, can I claim any and if so how much of my expenses... And if my expenses are always more than my income then it will never be assumed a business? more

Resolved Question: Was I Wrong to Gamble the Family money away?

Before reading, please do not judge me and please only answer if you're going to give honest answers! I am NOT making this up, so bare with me. I am 27, just finished my GED and was debating whether to go to college. I live at home with the folks, and have my very own bedroom- with home phone! I never have owned things like my own phone before. I find myself calling my girlfriends late at night and playing with the phone cord on one finger. Anyways...My family sat me down some time ago and said they were tired of me living at home wasting my life. I was a bit offended, but listened. My family told me they saved up $60,000 for me to go to college, and that I should try to apply to some community schools first. I agreed, and was excited to already declare my major in front of them- business, with a concentration in finance. I was accepted into a college, and my parents then deposited the funds into my bank account. They wanted me to be responsible for my own management, since it was my major after all. But right before the first semester started, my best friend Besty took me on a trip to a casino (we live in Wisconsin). I sat down at a slot machine and put in $20. As I played the machine, I won! I won $100. I couldn't believe it. I figured if it was this easy to play slots, I could earn thousands of dollars at the casino and save up to pay for an apartment. As the evening dwindled on, I sadly was losing...I lost over $2,000. Betsy understood, and told me we still had one more day. But I was out of money. Then it dawned on me- I still had the $60,000 my parents had put in my other account. And I happened to have the debit card on me. So I withdrew a quick $5,000 from the account and played on. I lost all of it. As I made my way back to the ATM, Betsy told me to stop, and that I was making a huge mistake. I told her to mind her damn business- it was MY life and I knew what I was doing. I ended up losing $62,000 in one night on slot machines. It took me about six hours, with a dinner break inbetween at their tasty buffet. I was in shocked horror as Betsy and me returned home. I had no money left for school. I called my parents to explain what happened, and to demand $65,000- $60,000 for school, and $5,000 for a trip back to the Casino to try to make up Apartment Saving Money, but they flat-out refused! They told me I was cut off, and that I was very stupid for gambling the money. I was so mad at them calling me stupid, and for denying me the money. Was I wrong to do this? I know gambling is addicting, but I had a system! I'm unique- I'm not like these other people who throw all their loot away. I was on a winning streak until the end. And My parents are awful to cut me off and tell me they're done dealing with me. Thoughts? more

Resolved Question: What not to get a woman for Valentine's day?

Hey there people. I made a list of things I personally dislike getting for Valentine's day. I felt clueless guys could use a little hint. Feel free to add to it. What not to get a grown woman for Valentine's day: 1. Those cheap heart shaped chocolate boxes they sell at places like Rite Aid, CVS, or your local supermarket. The chocolates are gross, have too much sugar anyway (acne and weight gain), and make me fat (I'm on a diet. Aren't we always). 2. Lingerie, especially if you don't know my size or if I'm not 100% happy with my body as are most women in America (stretch marks, flab, cellulite). 3. Cheap gift baskets with cheap Chinese made soaps, lotions, body sprays, bath salts, bubble bath, etc. That nasty stuff just makes my skin itch and makes me smell bad. If you're going to get me something to put on my body, make sure it comes from a nice, local business that makes organic products or products that actually will make my skin glow for a change. Something that women's magazines tell me is good for my body or something I can instantly tell is classy. 4. Cheap perfume. Do you see a pattern with the cheap stuff here? I don't want to smell like an old lady that picked up something at a 99 cents store to cover up her body odor. 5. Dinner at a really crowded restaurant when you haven't even made the reservation. Even if you did, I'm not waiting in line for half an hour or longer to get a seat at a place so busy it'll take forever to get the menu to begin ordering the food. And you know Valentine's evening at that one place you've been wanting to take me to will be crowded with hungry couples. 6. A store bought card with a personal note only a sentence or two long written by you and signed at the last minute. I'd rather you wrote me a song or a heart felt letter, and if you can't sing or can't write, at least try to compose a simple rhyming poem. Most kids in elementary school can do at least that. 7. Red roses. Many women may disagree here, but I think wildflowers from your backyard or a bouquet of locally grown, brightly colored flowers will do laborers and the environment more good. Plus, it's unique. However, now that I think about it, there's nothing really wrong with long stemmed red roses. They really are gorgeous. 8. Sex if I'm on my period and have really bad cramps or if for any reason, I'm not up to it. And there are many reasons why women would deny sex to their partners. 9. The latest electronic gadget that you've been wanting to have for yourself. I know you'll borrow it from me anyhow. 10. I really wanted to make a complete list of 10, but can't think of any thing else. Feel free to add to the list of things you don't want for Valentine's day or make a list of things you really do want.To add to the cheap things list. Jewlery. If it's something tacky, I'm not going to wear it. It will irritate my skin or break easily. Stuffed animals. What am I, a five year old? I don't need any teddy bears with the words I Love you on it. Give me something I can use or something you know I'll really like and keep for a long time. more

Resolved Question: Hi, I'm from Spain. Can you help me, please? Can you correct the grammar of this little summary, please?

According to the text, the text tells us about the new technology iris recognition. It was invented by three teachers at Cambridge University that discover that people’s irises are unique. Although it’s expensive, people are starting to use it at US prison, banks and some international airlines. The text ends up with a commentary of an American business, who thinks that it is more better that ID cards, and saying that experts predict that we will use it in the future. ******************************** If you think that there is something wrong , please, tell me. Voting Question: New stationery business - looking for a niche!?

I love design and stationery and want to go into business full-time doing what I love - invitations, cards, corporate products, etc. I am learning letterpress, which is a niche in and of itself. But I would like to offer something that no one else offers or few companies offer. In your experience, what could I offer that is unique in this industry? If you have recently been married, thrown a party or shower, or have any related experience with this type of business, what did you want that couldn't be found? Or, was there something you requested because it was unique and no one else had that? I'm basically doing market research on the invitation/stationery/paper market and I'm looking for any and all ideas! Thank you in advance... more

Resolved Question: statement of purpose, please help me with it, i welcome any change, thank you!?

As an international Chinese student in the United States, I believe that I have a great deal of business, academic, social, and cultural experience that will allow me to fit in well and contribute to the international flavor of Lund University. One of my most distinguishing characteristics is the diversity of experiences I possess. I am a business student with a flair for the arts. I am a woman with technical aptitude and an interest in entreprenership. I also have a passion for traveling and understanding different cultures of the world. All these elements have given me a very broad outlook, with varying degrees of knowledge in a range of topics. I strongly believe that although some are not related directly, all these qualities will influence my graduate work. My Business degree has given a strong foundation to my analytical skills since business issues research involves a lot of complex and intricate relationships among parties who are aiming at different goals, and the application of basic math, communication and psychology skills. Over the past four years in college, I have been working part-time with my own business, Shining SIM Card, set up when I just became a college student. I was the president of student government and am also an active member with SSE - Siemens Solar Energy. I have assisted my father in his project to supervise and monitor the process in his company during my breaks. More than what I have studied in school and college, it has been these experiences that have shaped the person that I am today. I believe that this unique blend of experiences has made me a woman with an original point of view. This blend has given me a broader perspective to and a good understanding of life and a goal to aim for. Among other things, I have this diversity of experience to offer Lund University. My most substantial accomplishment has been the success of Shining SIM Card that I managed in Dalian, China, where I have been working as a manager since 2005. Entreprenership, as a field, had always fascinated me right from my middle school days, and being an entrepreneur to contribute its utilities to mankind is the life long dream and career objective I persue, it is worthy to devote energy and commitment to found my own business and lead it success. Shining SIM Card, my first big step on my enterprise career, compared with prior experience, grew up from only one employee to fifteen, the main consumers from one campus were enlarged to other 6 big universities and also some small schools of the local city when I graduated. Most of my customers were college students, as a student myself, it was easy for me to do surveies, to know the popular tastes, and the most impressing way to promote the business with very limited resources. The advertisement form developped from hand writing poster on wall to big colorful advertisement scroll and products propaganda for freshmen annually. The goal for advertisement is let 60% of the students consider my products first when they are about to purchase, and let them to introduce us to the rest 40%. Also I had an online sale shop for the convenience of customers, which has been in operation for 5 years. Run my own business required me to believe in myself and in what I thought was good for the company. I had to take a pro-active approach, take the initiative and play a leadership role in motivating people and executing events to completion. A good manager is one who can figure out where problem lies and may happen, deal with it effectively by involving all the members of the company and improve the overall culture of the company. The problems I saw at Shining SIM Card had to be resolved to sustain the company. The fact that I was able to pull off this task alone has boosted my confidence in my abilities. The business climate has never been more friendly toward entrepreneurship than it is today. However, enterprise and creativity alone are rarely sufficient to bring an entrepreneur's ideas to fruition. Though, venturing off into Entrepreneurship is a challenge, one which I think some formal education can help solidify and provide a stronger foundation for success. So that leads me to my application for an entreprenership program at Lund University, and I wish to develop an idea based on research from Lund University, during the master year. more

Voting Question: Unique situation with my wifi access. Could someone suggest a great idea?

I have a Dell laptop with wifi and it works great. My neighbor lend me the passkey to his internet and I've been using it ever since. I've downloaded movies, music and conducted my Ebay business through it. I recently re-formatted my laptop to run sweet again and it is. I installed all the missing drivers and everything is back to normal. One thing though, my wifi is wigging out! It seems to work fine at the local library. Connects right away and surfs great. The problem is with my neighbors network. It detects it, connects to it but it won't let me surf. The mini-computer icon in the lower right of my task bar shows a yellow flag on it saying the signal is too weak. But even while in front of his house with "good strength" showing on my Wireless Card Utility Tool, it still won't connect and the flag stays there. I've hit repair several times but to no avail. This totally blows and I'm frustrated as heck. I'm missing something. Does anyone have any idea? I've tried to update the driver via Device Manager but it tells me I have the latest drivers. I am going to attempt to Microsoft and install the update which I haven't done. See if that helps. Also I am on XP OS, Home Edition. Looking forward to your answers and suggestions. Thanks y'all and God bless. Please, no prick answers like the jerk below. Maybe he would like to fix the economy so that I could finally land a job, anything at this point so that I could pay for my internet. My neighbor never complains and comes over often to learn from me. Thank God he's not a jerk like the a$$hole below, GTB. It should be GAL...Get A Life...loser. Resolved Question: What would you like from me?

I'm starting a dog grooming position, I book all of my appointments, charge what I want, etc., but I use my employers facilities. I'm going to start at 45% comission and the more clientelle I build I can earn up to 60%. Even if you don't have a dog, please answer. 1) What is a cheap unique way of advertising? (other than posting flyers) 2) If I were your dogs groomer, what would you want me to offer you (other than the given, like a well groomed dog or a competitive fee or great service fast) to keep your business? Frequent customer cards that allow you to earn discounted or free groomings? Customer with most monthly visits gets a doggie gift basket? A referral program? What is something (that isn't too expensive) I could give you that would keep you comming back? I'm looking for ideas that are unique and more than what one might expect! more

Voting Question: How to drum up business for myself?

I'm starting a dog grooming position at a pet shop. Its not in the town I live, I live about 15 mins from said grooming shop. The job is comission based, so the more pets I groom the more money I make. I will start at 45% and am able to work and earn up to 60%. How do I get people to bring their pet to me? What's a cheap, efficent way of advertising? Also, once I have business, what incentives can I offer to keep them comming? (the manager said no free grooming) I was thinking of a "frequent customer" card and after so many sessions offering the customer something for free (other than a grooming session) PS: no treats or hairbows or things like that.... Everyone does that, I'm looking for something unique! more

Resolved Question: is this a "good" stance on health care?

1. I don't believe the federal govt should be involved in healthcare 2. I feel like the health care insurance companies are taking advantage of millions of Americans.. (note I dont give a rats ass about illegal aliens , they dont deserve any health care) 3. There needs to be diffrent STATE options for health care.. kind of like the federal plan but on a state level.. so each state can have its own unique plan that fits its own population. 4. I would love to see every American covered.. .the only logical way to pay for it is to cut back on other useless programs like welfare and social security and other dumb programs. 5. A healthy nation is a Strong nation. It doesnt matter how much money you have, if your sick all the time your life isnt worth living. so its critical we have as many healthy people as possible. 6. as a conservative i am a strong beliver in the military.. I feel like we need to grow the military as much as possible. We need healthy people to join military who are able to fight and defend the nation. 7. health care is a basic human right of the citizens or legal immigrants whiten a nation. its time we cut back on stupid spending and shift that money into health care. 8. I am a Canadian living in the US ( i have a green card).. any one know why canada has healthier people that the united states? because we don't use health care as a mean of profit. I am for business but not when it harms the nations overall health. and we have a FLAT tax system so we can afford our health care system. comments? more

Resolved Question: What culture do you "stereotypically" act like...? For me its Korean..?

Yes...culturally I am African (Nigerian/Congolese) and I do adhere to my my own unique traditions and ways....but because African/Black culture is stereotyped one way...I dont "act" like what is considered stereotypically Black. The closest culture that I find I resemble is "stereotypically" Korean. It doesnt mean all Koreans act this way...this is just how they are stereotyped... I notice I tend to bow alot...I dont make eye contact with people... I usually accept business cards or gifts with both hands... I hate to unwrap gifts in front of people... I take off my shoes at home... I prefer to do business with people I know... Did I say I bow an awful lot???? http://www.ediplomat.com/np/cultural_etiquette/ce_kr.htm Where are you from and what culture do you act like?Thats good...you should never try to prove anything to anyone.. But what I am saying is...do you ever do things that is stereotypically considered part of another culture? What I do is VERY African...but it is stereotyped more as an Asian behavior... more

Voting Question: Having feelings for your best friend sucks... *kind of a long story*?

Maybe two months ago, I told my best friend that I noticed I was starting to have feelings for her. She kind of beat around the bush a bit, and that gave me some false hope because her response was "I've just never really thought about it." So a few weeks later, it came up again and it turned out that she just wanted to be friends. She lives 4 hours away and we're BEST friends. We talk on the phone a few times a week and text just about every minute of the day it seems. We have cute nicknames for each other. We send each other mix CDs in the mail once in a while. I even just sent her a birthday gift because she's turning 21. I sent her a box and inside was a Ralph Lauren Rugby bag filled with a few wrapped presents: a shot glass w/ "Happy 21st, _____ (the nickname I have for her)" engraved on it, a Snickers bar (inside joke of ours), Keith Urban's new CD (she loves him), and an envelope. Inside the envelope is a funny card with my own little unique touch, and also inside is a Dunkin Donuts gift card (because she goes there between her classes sometimes) and one last big present, a $100 Spa gift certificate. Sounds like a lot, but really, she's worth it. She's my best friend and she makes me so incredibly happy. I wish that she had never transferred colleges to live at home because I've never had a friend like her before. She's incredibly sweet and cute, too. I didn't always have feelings for her, though. When she came to visit last November, I drove back home that night and we were both sending each other some really cute text messages, mainly saying that we missed each other so much. In the back of my head, I was questioning why I missed this girl so much, and I pretty much had to tell myself to stop thinking about her. But as time went on, those feelings became more apparent and soon I could not stop thinking about her at all. I know this is really long, and I'm sorry for the inconvenience, but it's really important that I share this with someone, because it drives me nuts thinking about it all day. Sometimes hearing what others have to say helps. Anyways, I sent her that birthday gift and last night she got it. She told me that she loved me a thousand times and that she could just jump on me right now lol.. That I'm the sweetest person ever, how big of a smile she had on her face at the moment, and that I'm so incredibly thoughtful, and that it's perfect. It made me so happy to know she loved the present because last year when she still went to school with me, I selfishly skipped her birthday dinner and I wanted to make up for that, even tho she said we were both cool, and also because she means so much to me. Her mom died of breast cancer when she was 14. She's now almost 21. She had a boyfriend but broke up with him for reasons I'm not too clear about. It's not even my business but I'm pretty sure she told me that it was because he was selfish and always spent time at the bar and never with her. But the other night, she wanted to go to the movies to see the new Fast and Furious movie, but he wasn't too thrilled about it, so they settled and watched a movie at his house in the basement. For some reason, the topic of who they slept with while they were broken up came into play, and she said no one, while he said no one. They started to make out a bit and then he said that he lied just now, but that he loved her. She left and said never to talk to her again. She called me crying and said that it's hard to just forget about someone you love when they still love you. I felt like shit the rest of the night and pretty much the entire following day because I knew she was hurtin.. Today was pretty normal.. I woke up to a good morning text from her and we texted as the day went on and as she grew increasingly bored at work. She must have showed her dad the presents I sent her because she sent me a text sayin that he loves me, ahaha! There's no real question here, but man.. It just sucks so much to have feelings for your best friend and not have those feelings be reciprocal. I hope one day that it changes but I don't want to be obsessed over her or even act like I am, so I'm playing it cool. Any thoughts about this?karma - Absolutely. I'm gonna wait til she visits again, or until I visit her, to see if my feelings are real. I'm pretty sure they are legit, tho.. I don't know what I would do if I lost her as friend. Life would go on, but... I'd be devastated for quite some time. I've pretty much accepted the fact that it can't be, but I keep thinking "why not me?".. I've never had luck with girls that I've liked, and i was so sure that she liked me. But I'm completely satisfied with being friends. It just sucks, you know? more

Resolved Question: What should Americans do now that we're going to be jobless and broke?

Should we import third worlders to teach us how to "lime" and have siestas? Should we learn from them how to be lazy, in exchange for teaching them how to work hard doing the jobs we used to have? I'm having trouble figuring out the lazy part. Going from 100-hour workweeks to nothing is hard. My friends are all having the same problem. The president should form a laziness council and fly in citizens of Jamaica, Guinea-Bissou, Thailand and Somalia to show Americans how to be unemployed. We can learn to play board games, card games and unique foreign games that foreigners pass time with when the Japanese have destroyed their fishing business or Western countries clean out their natural resources. Maybe the street music will get better, now that harder-working, more dedicated people will be forced to make a living off of tips on the street. We can only dream.Iceman, that's a plan, I just have to lose a few pounds. more
