Booming Mideast Aviation Industry Faces Environmental Challenge

The Middle East's growing aviation industry is facing a major environmental hurdle as massive airport development continues to spiral around the region.

Research shows that 18 per cent of fuel is wasted each year through airport infrastructure and operational inefficiencies, amounting to 120 million tonnes of carbon dioxide worldwide. . more

Rally will fight road's widening

East Charlotte residents plan to protest this week the ongoing widening of Independence Boulevard, saying the project is hurting area businesses.

The Eastside Political Action Committee is planning a Thursday rally against plans to widen Independence from Albermarle Road to Conference Drive, a 1.4-mile stretch.

Construction of the $153.5 million project is expected to start in December 2010, said Wilson Stroud, N.C. Department of Transportation project planning engineer.

The rally is planned for 5:30-7 p.m. in front of the Coliseum Shopping Center, between Norland Road and Pierson Drive. Residents, business owners and others are expected.

The project dates to the 1980s, when the state began widening Independence Boulevard as a way to ease traffic between Matthews and uptown. more

Workshop set Thursday on doing business in China

A workshop for companies interested in doing business in Hong Kong and mainland China is set for 5 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Room 202 of Honolulu's Foreign Trade Zone No. 9 at 521 Ala Moana.

The Hong Kong Business Association of Hawaii is hosting the event, which will include presentations by Gautam Bardoloi, associate partner with IBM Business Consulting Services, and Gregory Barbour, chief administrator of the Foreign Trade Zone Division of the state Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism.

The workshop will include a live teleconference link with the Hong Kong Trade Development Council in Hong Kong. Businesses on Maui also will be able to join via teleconference from Maui Community College. Tickets for the event in Honolulu, which includes pupu and refreshments, are $20. more
