Behind the Business Objects-Oco SaaS Deal

Earlier this month I saw a press release with the headline "Oco and Business Objects Sign Deal... " Vendor partnerships don't usually float up to my must-cover list, but this one peaked my interest. After all, what does Business Objects, an SAP Company, the world's largest BI vendor and a software-as-a-service (SaaS) force in its own right, have to gain from Oco Inc., an upstart SaaS vendor that's a fraction of Business Object's size? Business Objects executive Mani Gill filled me in on the details.

To set the stage, Business Object's SaaS assets include four distinct offerings. CrystalReports.com dates back to February 2006 and was the company's first foray into SaaS. The service lets customers perform analyses and generate reports on in-house data as well as data within Salesforce.com deployments. more

Personal Journal Update

The transition from casual seller to profit-seeking business can seem almost spontaneous.

Like many eBay sellers, Sarah Davis didn't set out to be a business owner. But somewhere between her first online sale and last quarter's $560,000 in sales of second-hand luxury handbags, it dawned on her that she had become one. From the time she started selling in 1999, Ms. Davis reported income from her eBay sales on a Schedule C. By 2005, her business had grown large enough that she sought tax advice. Soon after, she incorporated her business, Fashionphile, as an LLC.

"You start out selling some stuff from your closet, and then the random clearance handbag," Ms. Davis said from her Beverly Hills, Calif., office. Mix in some shoes you never wore and "It's hard to say when you are really, 'in business.' "

Here are a few suggestions to help eBay entrepreneurs protect themselves and their profits, while complying with tax laws:

Report all income from online sales, even from casual or hobby selling. more

Business Cards Canada Questions asked

Resolved Question: I need a name for a Home Cake Decorating Business.?

Your Question I need a name for a Home Cake Decorating Business.? I have been making cakes for a year and a half or so. Lately people have been asking me for business cards to pass out as they have been asked by guests at their parties. Also, the only place I have my cakes available to see are flickr and facebook but only friends can see the facebook pics so i;d like to start a group or fan page. The only trouble is I don't really have a name. My email is cakesbystace but I really don't like that name. My name is Anastasia, or Stacey, but I don't necessarily need my name in it. Just want something unique and easy to remember. ANyone have any ideas??? I realize I have to check to see if the name I choose has already been registered here, in Saskatchewan Canada, but I don't even know where to start looking. Here's my flickr site to give you an idea of the kinds of cakes I do. Thanks! http://www.flickr.com/photos/40248840@N08/ more

Resolved Question: Yu-Gi-Oh Supplies in San Diego?

I'm stopping through San Diego California on my way to and from Mexico and in Canada KMC sleeves and Monster binders are very rare and have to be ordered in. In the USA I know there more common as the German company sold rights to make them in the US. I messaged Artifex Entertainment and they only carry KMC sleeves and top gaming which I haven't heard back from. Does anyone know a place that would carry both? Here are two pictures of the items from eBay to show you what they look like. Some monster binders in different colors: http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?VISuperSize&item=390164065097 http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?VISuperSize&item=400104340708 http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?VISuperSize&item=400106400329 And KMC sleeves: http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?VISuperSize&item=390127547769 http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?VISuperSize&item=230391289686 http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?VISuperSize&item=390159193634 The sleeves are easier to find but sadly the card store here that had them went out of business with the city's new laws. The links aren't working so here is just the auction links. http://cgi.ebay.ca/Yu-Gi-Oh-Monster-Protectors-Binders-Black-Limited-Ed_W0QQitemZ400106400329QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item5d28332a49#ht_1765wt_939 http://cgi.ebay.ca/Yu-Gi-Oh-Monster-Protectors-Binders-Green-Holographic_W0QQitemZ390164065097QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item5ad7972b49#ht_1765wt_939 and some sleeves: http://cgi.ebay.ca/50-KMC-SUPER-BLUE-YUGIOH-CARD-SLEEVES-DECK-PROTECORS_W0QQitemZ390127547769QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item5ad569f579#ht_4025wt_939 http://cgi.ebay.ca/KMC-YANOMAN-YUGIOH-SIZE-CARD-SLEEVES-ORANGE-SUPER-Pack_W0QQitemZ390159193634QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item5ad74cd622#ht_1996wt_1165 more

Resolved Question: HELP WITH PAYPAL! May have been scammed.?

Im only a little familiar with paypal, recently i bought bands for my teeth at http://www.orthofill.com/ and chose to pay through paypal, because im always weary paying through with just my card, so when the paypal option is available..i use it. Anyway I ordered their product on this website and recieved a PayPal Email stating that the payment has gone through. But as i usually buy things through them i get a confirmation email from the seller, sayin that they had atleast recieved my order or somthing of that sort. I have gotten nothin in the past two days. The order will take 5-10 business days comming from canada, but i am afraid that this company may be fraud now after no confirmation was recieved by me. So i decided to email them yesterday...no answer yet but im still waiting on that. Could it be that they scammed me? as in took my money and ran?...I didnt think this was possible through paypal considering all their information is taken before being able to retrieve or use money. Does anyone know what could happen if they dont send the product? What actions can be taken? Please help! more

Resolved Question: Can revenue Canada seize my bank account for my husbands debt?

I moved to Canad from the states back in October 2009. I opened a bank account completely separate from my husband. He owes about $25,000 in taxes to Revenue Canada. He was making payments until last summer when he lost his job. Since he couldn't find work, he was living off his credit cards. Revenue Canada contacted him when he stopped making payments and he let them know about the situation. They sent him some paperwork he filled out and out of good faith he made a $100 payment and told them he would pay more when he could. When I moved here we didn't think I would have any problems finding work, but even after almost 6 months I was only able to get a month seasonal job during Christmas, otherwise no one will even give me an interview. In the meantime my husband has started a small business that just barely covers our monthly living expenses (this was back in December). At the same time he received a letter from Revenue Canada stating if he didn't fill out this form that authorized them to pry into every nook and cranny of our lives for the past 10 years, they would proceed with legal action. Since it was Christmas we couldn't get an appointment to see an attorney to find out what our options were so he sent a letter to Revenue Canada asking them for an additional 30 days to consult a lawyer and he would get back to them. After talking to the lawyer, my husband make several attempts to contact Revenue Canada. never hearing back or being able to get a hold of the person he was dealing with. Before we knew it, they seized his bank account and took what little money that was in it. Miraculously when he called Revenue Canada to find out what happened he got a hold of the guy and he told him basically any money that goes in Revenue Canada will take and they were proceeding with legal actions. When he told him he kept trying to get in contact with him, the guy played dumb like he never got any of his messages. So my questions are 1) what are our options? We can negotiate a payment plan but there is no way we can pay off all the debt in 2 years like they want especially since I can't get anyone to hire me. and 2) can revenue Canada seize my bank accounts as well even though it is solely my account and not a joint account? Thanks ahead of time! more

Resolved Question: What is the possibility of getting a temporary a canadian PR card while in another country?

My husband is a permanent resident in Canada, but he is outside of the country and has been for a few months now. His card has expired along with that his visa has expired as well. The canadians are aware with the fact his visa will expire during the process of getting a temporary PR card to travel back to Canada. But it's been 2 weeks, they said 6-10 business days. Still the canadians have given no response. Everything has been submitted. So even if they do give him the temporary PR card so that will he be able to travel with an expired visa? the canadians knew beforehand but are taking so long. will they even consider giving it to him? he is from south asia (nationality) but currently he is in another country. i'm assuming they just wanna give a hard time. of course if it was some european they'd give it in 2 days...michael c. u wont understand the frustration. u never went through that in ur entire life. when u have to wait, and u dont know if the answer is yes or no. when some1 else has control over u, and they decide and take as long as they want. more

Resolved Question: Is this a fake landlord? Am I being scammed?

Okay, so I saw a craigslist ad for a townhome for rent. I told my hubby about it and it was all good. Then we visited and still thought nothing of it. Then we noticed how much he expressed that he needed to do a credit check but needed US to get the credit report for him because according to him, they made a privacy act where he wouldn't be able to view it. Strange... because in our previous apartments, we didn't have to get anything. We found that quite strange. Then we looked at the application he gave us and it asked for not only our bank account number, but our CREDIT CARD NUMBER and the expiration date! What in the world is going on here? I don't feel comfortable anymore. He did show us the interior and exterior of the place so I don't know how in the world he got the keys. Also, at first, he had a local number, but the second time he called, he called me from a different area code and I looked up the area code and it was from CANADA. :O My gosh, I mean, maybe he's just helping someone out. Maybe he just doesn't now what he's doing. Maybe he's being extra careful but there is no way in the world I'm giving that man my credit card # and the expiration date. He also cannot be found anywhere online when I googled both his phone numbers and his name. On the application it doesn't list a company, it merely lists his name and a fax number on the application. He didn't even seem to have a business card and didn't even express what he did for a living, or if he's rented out before, etc. There was a brochure in the townhome he let us have that had a real estate lady's name and number on it. (I saw another townhome in the same area but that one was better. The man actually had a business card, the company name was on the application, he knew real estate agents in the area, it was more of a better feeling for myself.) This guy is from Canada apparently, I do not feel comfortable with him at all. So I would probably be setting myself up for a scam if i pursue, correct? "Duh"s are welcome lol. I do plan on renting a townhome, but I'm not about to risk getting scammed. All I can do now is just keep trying to contact a real estate agent and see if this guy is legit. Even if she says he is, I don't think it's worth dealing with him anymore. Especially since I or my spouse, don't feel comfortable. I did contact the real estate lady and she said that he was the owner of the home and said I was smart to call her. She also said to check tax records if I want to verify and said that people have called her before and asked her if it was a scam. But it was strange that I called her more than once and she only returned my call when I left a message, claiming she just got out of church even though its like 9:20am and a lot of churches around here don't even start till around this time even 10 or 11 am. I just don't feel comfortble anymore. If he is legit, then why does he need my credit card number? Why isn't his phone number on the application? and why can't he access my credit records on his own? Ugh. :P more

Voting Question: I'm being held here in the states by my husband and I want to go home to Canada.?

Now before you all start jumping up and down, yelling, 'You've got to be kidding!' or 'Must be your own fault!' let me explain how I got here. I'm a fifty-five year old Canadian woman. I've been married for the last 30 years or so to my second husband, have three daughters and 2 grandsons. Two of the girls live near me in the United States. My eldest is in Canada, with her husband and their boys. I have been here for twenty years, moving where my husband's job moved. We had 2 farms in Canada. We went into business with my son-in-law and eventually lost everything. The business went under last year; mad cow, recession etc. My husband had my son-in-law using tax right offs up there, while he opened a Business account and wrote off the farms. He's a Marine Manager and makes a hell of a good salary. He blamed the son-in-law, the governments, me, everyone but hime. I understood what was happening and felt I owed everything to him, for he had put up with me all those years. After seven years of marriage, and thanks to my husband (he saw a story about it on tv and said 'hey that's you and your crazy father) I went to my doctor, who diagnosed me and a sent me to a psychiatrist. I am bi-polar. I accepted this and wanted more than anything for the meds and therapy to work. After years of therapy, I became well, balanced and on my meds. That hasn't changed. My husband calls me crazy everytime I stand up to him. What I didn't know at the time was that my husband is a controller. He does the shopping, decides where we are to spend every week end, tells me when to go to bed and when to get up. He is a born, British subject, a nationalized Canadian citazen and now, an American citazen. He has me down here, no green card, no citizenship, and a Canadian passport due to run out in August. I don't know where to begin searching for help. I left him once before and spent a year living on my own, filing for divorce, in Canada. Then I found out I have no rights, at least with me up there and him living down here in Texas. I did not know he was going to leave me with no way to get home. I told him I wasn't coming down to be his housekeeper. I was wrong on both counts. I have no rights to file for divorce down here. I'm down here illegally. He has told the government nothing about my being here. He has, in fact, scolded me many times that it was my fault I had no green card as I believed a border guard who told me I had to spend six months and one day down in the states, less than six months in Canada. We had two farms in Canada and I had my own home and yet I gave up my card. Of course, to my husband, I'd been foolish and should have just lied. Though a florist, I have no job because I have no green card. I have no money except for the credit card he allows me to use, always near the limit, which he can access and watch every transaction I make. Yes, I do have family in Canada. Do you know how difficult it is to ask them to help when I know they don't have any money? I know I should find a way, but I don't know how. I'm beginning to believe him when he says 'i'm the crazy one.' Yes, I have a pschyitrist down here (Texas) and a family doctor, but he is so good at making himself the victem and I'm so tired of being called crazy. When I was in Canada last, two of my daughters told doctors how my husband had scary anger issues. They were wasting their breath. Now that you've read this far, I don't need to know how I've made the wrong choices. I just want to know how to go home. Any kind of info would help. more

I had some problems with this company last year. Resolved Question: How much cash goes to government for every £1 acquired working?

I'm reading a book (How I clobbered every bureaucratic cash-confiscatory agency known to man) which is written by a canadian author, according to her figures up to 85% of peoples pay end up in taxes her list of them includes: "excise and impost: income (federal, state/provincial, and local), sales, GST, Sin taxes (alcohol, tobacco), permits (firearm, building, septic, well), endless banking service fees (credit cards, stocks, bonds, accounts...), endless fines and penalties (traffic, invoice late fees...), travel (flight, hotel, rental), capital gains, corporate income, court costs, licences (marriage, dog, hunting, fishing, driving, piloting, all professional, all business), insurance (property, life, medical, vehicle, employment, workers compensation), fuel permit, gasoline (about 37%), inheritance, inventory, IRS/CRA interest and penalty charges (tax on top of tax), luxury, property, real estate, social security/Canada pension, truckers road usage, registration fees (birth, all professions, all vehicles), school, sports, communication (TV, cable/satellite, internet, fax, endless telephone service fees (universal, federal, state/prov., and local charges, surcharges, minimum usage.... ) tolls (road, bridge, tunnel), utility (water, gas, electricity, garbage), and the biggest, most insidious of them all: inflation which is tax on the ‘money’ itself" This is in Canada though, I was wondering whenever or not its probably more or less here in the UK or the same although that's probably hard to answer thanksAI - I don't think you read the list of taxes theirs a lot more than what you listed even if the 6000 odd isn't taxed it's still taxed when its spent on fuel, on any "luxury food" (anything that aint beans), on energy, on bank charges, on VAT, on carbon taxes (soon) I'm just listing what I can think of I'm sure theres a lot more so your answer is nowhere near accurate.Right so inflation's a product of the economic environment yet its been happening forever and the value of our money has been declining, where do you think that value goes? it doesn't disappear. One parent used to be able to work and the family could live comfortably yet now mostly 2 work and struggle.. it's hard to see the bars of an invisible prison mate you should read that book google it, you might awaken yourself to the fact your a slave. more

Resolved Question: migrating after marriage... what are our options?

My boyfriend and I in our midtwenties and planning to marry in about 2 years time. We live in Jakarta, Indonesia. Because of the pollution here, I've been having health problems. I've lived in medium-sized major cities in the US, Australia, and Europe, and have always been a healthy girl. But since living in Jakarta I've been suffering frequent colds, perpetual headaches, and very low stamina, especially on and around my period. It may be anemia but I haven't checked because I don't really trust the doctors here. My boyfriend--a young lawyer by profession--has been a globetrotter like me, and has expressed interest in living elsewhere, although we haven't really started any serious planning. He was born in Switzerland, but as the son of an Indonesian embassy employee dual citizenship was prohibited so his ID card states Jakarta as his birthplace instead of Geneva. He graduated both his bachelors and masters in law from The Netherlands, whose laws are the basis of Indonesian law. Likewise, Dutch law is concordant with French law and the law of other countries based on Ancient Roman law. He specialises in corporate and business law, and has worked in Holland as well as Indonesia. I have a Canadian permanent residence, which my family and I have earned through legal procedures that started when I was still a minor. I have never lived there. My parents and I visited Canada in 2007 to activate the permit (I was 22), but we are required to reenter in 5 years time ie 2012 (I will be 27). In 2011 I expect to graduate with a bachelors in performing arts communication and in 2012 a masters in journalism or broadcasting. Over the past 3 years I have worked on and off as translator/interpreter, master of ceremony (hosting small concerts and seminars), and hosting a radio talk show. Recently I've decided to cross over to brand management/advertising as a copywriter, hoping that it would land me a fun but challenging job supporting quirky creative professionals like graphic designers, professional photographers, product developers, and others in charge of advertising/brand development campaigns. I plan to join campus clubs to start my portfolio and hope that it would land me with internships or projects elsewhere so I would at least have some experience by the time I migrate. In the future I'd prefer to work on a freelance basis, in case my would-be-husband might get transferred frequently, plus I would like my time to be relatively flexible so we can raise a family. OK, so in short my boyfriend has ties with Europe and I have ties with Canada. Once married, we want to migrate together somewhere (not necessarily Canada or Switzerland although those are the more obvious options for now). I do NOT prefer EU countries, although I'm not totally against it either. We need to prepare how we're going to live overseas and still be able to thrive in our professions. The way I have seen others do this is by joining a multinational company that happens to have an office in Jakarta, then climb the corporate ladder to get transferred elsewhere... how would this work out for a lawyer? (I'm more concerned about him having the fixed job, as I expect to work more as an independent professional in the future) Where can we find more information to explore our options so we can start preparing ahead of time? Companies to work for? International professional associations to join? Policies concerning spouses of Canadian permanent residents or the possibility of an adult born in Switzerland to request citizenship/permanent residency? Policies of other countries? Cities with significantly better air quality than Jakarta? Thanks :) more

Resolved Question: An immigration officer came to my door asking me to show...?

My husband and I returned from Egypt almost two years ago. While visiting I gave birth to my daughter. Just recently an immigration officer went knocking at my neighbours doors asking if they knew for sure if my daughter was mine. The officer also contacted my parents on whether or not our daughter is our child. Something about the baby's passport alerted a red flag. Whatever that might be...I finally got in contact with the immigration officer. He met my husband and I in our home which I thought was odd and quite uncomfortable. When we offered to show him the baby's birth certificate and other identifications he declined and said we will meet at another date and gave us his business card. I am now wondering if I should meet with him at his office just to make sure he is who he says he is. And, is investigating what he says he is. Am I to give him the originals and have him photo copy them if needed. Or should I photo copy my identification and give it to him? Any feed back/ legal advise is greatly appreciated. It is probably nothing, I'm just playing it safe. I reside in CanadaSpoke with the officer again. He wants to meet with us and said he will come to our home. He also said he will take the passports/birth certificates and make copies of it. I will contact the office, I am feeling uncomfortable letting him walk out of my door with such important documents.I was born in Canada and don't have any experience with immigration but I felt that the immigration officer was not conducting himself as should be. I would like to thank everyone for responding to my message. And, I appreciate the support. Everyone gave good advice that I will use. I don't know why someone asked if I was sponsoring him to Canada? This is about my child. Again, Thank You All! more

Resolved Question: what universities can i get into that would be good for me?

well i have a 3.5 gpa (averaged - As and Bs - only 2 Cs not even on the final report card my whole 4 high school years). i got a 20 (am taking it again in december) on the acts and got an 81% on the writing part. I love little children, adults, and animals (and like to help take care of people) um i did soccer in 8th grade and got an award... i also kind of want the collge to be close to Maryland (like less than 3 hours away) the majors i'm interested in are education, business information technology, anything in animal scienes (not sure yet), photography or/and creative writing and that's all i can think of at the moment. so which colleges would be good for me?well i'll prob want to be part time. i don't really want to overload in courses so yeah. and i do have enough money for all colleges... more

Voting Question: I have been denied for a Canadian study permit...Shall I re-apply again to see what happens next?

A month ago, I applied for the study permit and just yesterday I received the documents from the courier service. A Letter of Refusal, the original copy of the Letter of Acceptance from the school and the Original Receipt of the processing fee. Reasons for the refusal are as follows: 1. I have insufficient ties with my country of residence. 2. I have not answered truthfully questions 12 and 13. 3. I have not answered that I will leave the country once completing my studies -> I remember noting that I will leave the country once completing on my study plan attached. My answers to the questions are 1. The fact to this matter is that I am a Bruneian-born-Korean. However, I had to return back to Korea for the military service and university..which I have fully completed my military service in Rep. of Korea Army. In addition, I do have a valid Korean passport, driver's licence and an ID card. These all-in-one-answer-pack proofs me that I am still a citizen of Korea. Why does the embassy needs to know if I have lived overseas and requires informations in regard to. What's their business to do with this very question? 2. Have I applied for any visas before? Yes, I applied once for a study permit to study in Toronto from the period of April 2003 to Dec 2004. However, this was way way back...and therefore I said No. 3. During the past 5 years, have I or family members lived in any other countries other than the country of residence for more than six months? Yes and No. Yes, as stated above since I am a Bruneian-born-Korean, living there for 18 yrs until high school. Besides this was way beyond ten years and not 5 years back story.. didn't know and still unsure to tick Yes or No to this question. Thus, I ticked No on my very first application. The only country I lived in the past five years more than six months was Canada. 2 years studying in Toronto. Apr 2003 ~ Dec 2004 I have also been on a business trip to Qatar, Doha (Middle East) for work...but this was only for 3 1/2 months.. Shall I say Yes to this question and write everything down? My course starts tomorrow (26th) which is a year long...and providing the fact that I have been refused a visa for the first time and re-applying for the new one will unlikely get me anywhere since I have been denied for the visa..I think they (the embassy) still do have the past record. I am not sure if re-applying for the new visa on a later date than the course start date may or may not effects me in any way(s) in issuing the new visa. Will there be any chances of me getting a new visa OR will it be like I may re-apply...but the chances are far below...as I am being denied and not answering the questions truthfully. Bottomline is I wasn't lying and NEVER lied on the application. It's just that I wasn't sure whether to write everything down even if this was way beyond in the years.. In some cases as to my knowledge I thought it would be much better to say NO if unsure. I did have asked my Canadian teacher to see if she can help me in anyway and she told me to try to re-apply assuming that I may get a new one regardless of the past. However, this is to an extent and not on the whole. What shall I do? Shall I re-apply? To re-apply means I have to re-take the medical exam which will costs me a lump sum plus the visa processing fee..meaning I may have to double the payment. My friends are all waiting and they want me to get together with them to study. more

Resolved Question: How do you take your picture off of the internet?

I had a friend who was a RE/MAX Commercial Real Estate Agent based out of Laval, Quebec (Canada). When he was an agent, you could google his name and you could see his business card in the search results. He talked about moving to Australia and changing his name, but I never took him seriously. He also bragged about having connections with a "Persian" Drug Kingpin who had farms and grow operation all over Quebec, and he also said he had access to the "best criminal lawyer in Quebec". Last year he stopped being my friend (for lack of better words) and he broke off all contact with everyone we both know. Now there is ABSOLUTELY NO TRACE of him ANYWHERE on the internet. 1 second ago - 4 days left to answersteelnquisitor: (1) The reason why "Persian" is in quotes, is because that's how HE described the guy. (2) "conspiracy theory"?? I gave you FACTS. Not opinions. That IS what this guy told me and that IS what happened. more

Resolved Question: Will I have any problems crossing the border to visit my American boyfriend from Canada?

I can't reply to a question I just asked, and people had more questions for me, and I was looking for more info. My original question was: "I'm travelling to the US on vacation to see my boyfriend (yes, we did meet online). I have read and heard some things about this being a problem, and people routinely getting refused entry due to this? I am only staying a week, I have my train schedule showing the return date, and the hotel booking also only showing a week. I have no intention (or desire at this time) to stay, it is truly a visit/vacation only. But I hear that customs never beleives that, and I probably wont be allowed across, is this true?" I wanted to give some more answers, as people asked them, so here they are: I’m Canadian, I have my passport. We are staying at a hotel, as we're vacationing together. The hotel confirmation they could ask for shows we are sharing a room/bed, so it would be obvious that I was lying if I said he was just a friend. I work in customer service, so I don't have a business card. I just have a hard time with the fact that everyone says to lie basically. I realize not everyone considers an online boyfriend a real one, that's fine, but I am sure Customs does, and they wont be impressed if it is proven he is more (by way of the hotel for example). I don't feel comfortable lying in any way, especially since I have stuff that would prove I was lying. It sounds to me like I shouldn't even bother cause they are gonna give me a hard time. I understand that Customs is there to make sure people are entering the country for the right reasons, but mine are true and legit, I am not doing anything wrong. With so many people meeting online today, I never realized it would be an issue. more

Voting Question: What is cheapest computer I can connect to TV to play 1080 content.?

I'd like to connect a laptop to my TV to watch videos. Since that is the only use for my laptop, I'd like to find the cheapest solution. The video content may include 1080 resolutions as well as processor demanding encodings like H264. An answer with a list of processor, ram, video card would be sufficient. Another option would be to point out one of the laptop models from Dell Canada's site: http://www1.ca.dell.com/ca/en/business/Laptops/ct.aspx?refid=notebooks&s=bsd&cs=cabsdt1&~ck=mnDetails: BluRay player not required. I think I can replace HDMI output with DVI + plug in speakers to headphone jack if that is a cheaper option. more

Resolved Question: How long will my mail be held at canada customs?

I recently purchased an item from germany, upon entering my tracking number it says that "item will be reviewed at canada customs" or something to that effect. Does this mean my mail is being inspected. A friend told me when mail gets inspected, it can take much longer. What percentage of mail actually gets inspected? I purchased an autographed hockey card, so it is classified under "letter mail" with canada post if that helps. My parcel reached canada in 4 business days from germany, but has sat in customs for two days now. This sucks. more

Resolved Question: How to get a GOOD computer in Canada for a fair price?

Hi. It seems only in the US can you get a decent desktop computer online for a fair price. (between 1000 and 1600 USD, depending on whether dual video cards are included or not) BTW: decent computer = at LEAST 500 watt power supply (preferably 750+), at least 2 pci-e x16 slots on motherboard SLI compatible (preferably 3 or 4 slots) at least 2gb ram (preferably 4+), dual Nvidia NVS 290 x16 video cards or better (this is optional, I can pick these up separately), no preloaded operating system (optional, I can always delete windows as soon as I get the computer, but it's stupid to have to pay for something I'm not even going to use). CyberPower and Dell USA sell these for fair prices, but neither will ship to Canada and Dell Canada has a 75-100% markup on the US prices or in some cases doesn't even offer the best products to Canadians (such as the Precision T3400 525w model). I need a professional system that is scalable and supports at least 3-4 monitors, not the toys being flogged at futureshop/bestbuy. And not anything made by Acer. ***Does anyone know where a Canadian can buy a decent computer for a fair price these days? Most likely from a US company that will ship to Canada???*** (on a side note, I thought the whole point of NAFTA was to allow free trade across the Canada/US border that would be mutually beneficial for Canadians and Americans. ie I get a proper computer, US company gets my business. Not so, apparently...) Thanks!!I have seen Newegg but heard they don't ship to Canada... if that is true then not useful to me unfortunately more

Resolved Question: What can I do about this?

My sister met this guy at a church a few months. They have called (actually he asked her to call, since according to him calling cards are more expensive in Australia). They email a few times a week and he asked her to come down and see him. This trip will cost 2000$ and she only works on the weekend as she is 21 and still in school. She went on 2 dates with him , that's it. She just knows what is he has told her- his faith, his job and that is it. I am freaking out since she is planning to go in 2 weeks! She is asking her professors to take a week off for "personal reasons". I feel really sad since she is selling her prized out of print books on ebay to go and see him. He claims to be a 29 and a business man and I cannot figure why he can't come to Canada (we live here). She asked him but he says that he is "too busy"with work. And what about my sister?! Her school? Anyway, I am really concern that this man might be bad news and frankly, we know nothing about him. I wouldn't care if she was here dating him but she plans even to stay at his home in some rural town in Australia. She thinks he claims to be a Christian means that he is a "good" man.Is this a dangerous idea or am I being paranoid? What can I do? Please serious answers, I am at wit's end. more

Resolved Question: Online store ratings and reviews...?

Hi, I'm thinking about ordering some items online, but since it's from a small shop rather than a large business like Amazon.com, I'm a bit worried about fraud issues and stuff. Does anyone know a good place to find ratings and reviews of online stores (preferably from Canada). I want to check if the place is OK before I do something stupid like giving them my address and credit card number... Thanks! Thanks "Helpful Answers"... Resolved Question: How would you refute these 9 points on the advantages of America adopting a health plan more like Canada`s?

1. All Americans would have health insurance. This is the right thing to do because it reflects and promotes core values and notions of citizenship: equality, compassion, and social solidarity. Sickness doesn’t discriminate. Neither should health care. 2. Health would improve. On almost every critical measure (life expectancy, infant mortality, etc.), Canada rates higher than the U.S., and we’re among the best in the world. 3. It would cost less. Canada spends 9.8% of GDP on health care, while the U.S. spends more than 15%. A single-payer system is the less expensive way to go. 4. Patients would have more choice. In Canada, patients can choose whatever doctor, specialist, and hospital they want. Treatment decisions are left to patients and their doctors. No insurance companies meddle in our choices. 5. Quality of service would improve. In Canada, health providers never have to choose between their wealth and a patient’s health. Our system forbids that choice. The vast majority of Canadians are highly satisfied with the quality of care they receive. In Canada, patients rarely sue physicians. 6. It would reduce the bureaucracy. Patients in Canada show their health card and get care. Health providers bill the government directly and get paid. It’s that simple. 7. Fewer Americans would go bankrupt because of health-care costs. This is a major problem for many U.S. families. It rarely happens in Canada. 8. It would benefit business. Companies in Canada have a competitive advantage because they don’t have to provide basic health-care coverage for their workers. 9. It would diminish labor strife. Health care is incidental in labor negotiations in Canada. It’s a large and growing pitfall in contract negotiations in the U.S.Your false = head in sandyawn= I have no fricking idea how to answerFrom the Frasier Institute (a couple of years old but not much has changed) Numbers of people waiting: The numbers of people waiting for each procedure and therefore each specialty were also calculated. Throughout Canada, the total number of people waiting for treatment was 166,150 in 2005, a reduction of 22 percent between 1998 and 2003. The number of people waiting rose in Saskatchewan, Newfoundland, and Prince Edward Island. As a percentage of the population, 0.54 percent of Canadians were waiting for treatment in 2005, which varied from a low of 0.36 percent in Ontario to a high of 2.23 percent in SaskatchewanO`Reilly wouldn`t be trying to be a bit biased now would he?Gitmo...your stats are false, no doubt in my mind. more

Resolved Question: Help finding a place to make business cards in Toronto, ON, Canada?

I run a bar/restaurant and I want to make business cards for myself and managers to look more professional. I was hoping for some guidance towards finding a place that can do it for a reasonable price and offers a quality product. I want it to have our logo, so I suppose it'd be a custom one. Specifically, I'm in Thornhill, but would be willing to go anywhere around the GTA or even deal with online store. Any help would be greatly appreciated! more

Resolved Question: is this a "good" stance on health care?

1. I don't believe the federal govt should be involved in healthcare 2. I feel like the health care insurance companies are taking advantage of millions of Americans.. (note I dont give a rats ass about illegal aliens , they dont deserve any health care) 3. There needs to be diffrent STATE options for health care.. kind of like the federal plan but on a state level.. so each state can have its own unique plan that fits its own population. 4. I would love to see every American covered.. .the only logical way to pay for it is to cut back on other useless programs like welfare and social security and other dumb programs. 5. A healthy nation is a Strong nation. It doesnt matter how much money you have, if your sick all the time your life isnt worth living. so its critical we have as many healthy people as possible. 6. as a conservative i am a strong beliver in the military.. I feel like we need to grow the military as much as possible. We need healthy people to join military who are able to fight and defend the nation. 7. health care is a basic human right of the citizens or legal immigrants whiten a nation. its time we cut back on stupid spending and shift that money into health care. 8. I am a Canadian living in the US ( i have a green card).. any one know why canada has healthier people that the united states? because we don't use health care as a mean of profit. I am for business but not when it harms the nations overall health. and we have a FLAT tax system so we can afford our health care system. comments? more

Resolved Question: How to apply for a job in US from Canada?

I'm sure this has been asked many times on here, but I really need to know for myself... I'm a recent college grad in my late 20's in Business Administration Marketing, and have 2 year work experience in marketing in the entertainment business, plus 2 other college diplomas in IT and design, all from Canada, where I've been born and raised. I really would love to move to the US to not only work, but live there for a while too, but have not sure how to start. I'm hearing mainly you need someone like an employer to sponsor you to get a work visa, but I'm reading so much different information out there from various sites, it's overloading my brain! Should I just start applying for US jobs from Canada and hope to get some response, or what? Are there any really good sites, or contact numbers or e-mails, etc. on obtaining more information on this, like work visas, green cards, etc. Please, any help would be appreciated, as I am really stuck on how to go about this. Serious answers only please. Thank you. more

Resolved Question: ____ Lapointe? I need help finding out an artist's first name!?

A few days ago, I went to an art gallery in Montreal, Canada. There was a prticular artist I liked, so I asked someone that worked there to write down the artist's name on a business card. I put that business card in a paper bag. Later, the paper bag got extremely wet in a thunderstorm and I took out all the contents except the business card. I really want to find out the artist's name. He made sculptures (bronze?) of distorted figures. When you looked through a lens on the sculpture, the figure wouldn't be distorted anymore. I only remember that the artist's last name is "Lapointe." If you help me find the first name, I will give you 10 points! more

Resolved Question: A guy owes me money for a job, but there is no signed contract or agreement. What should i do?

I was asked to design some business cards, a company logo and website for an acquaintance of mine. I initially told him how much i would charge and an estimate quote on final price. I showed him the work along the way and he was more than satisfactory with the job. I sent him an invoice in the mail, notified him by email and phone, but only now, 4 months after, i contact him only to find out that he can't afford to pay me what i charged him (an excuse) and that he will only pay 25% of the price. The work i did for him is worth much more than the final price i charged, but since he was a friend i didn't charge full amount. There was no signed agreement at the start either. I'm not sure what to do, because i don't have a business and i am not a citizen over here in Canada. Any ideas? more

Resolved Question: Have I been scammed online?

Has anyone ever ordered anything from cruisingforremotes.com before? It's a site that sells aftermarket remotes for car alarm/remote starter systems. My remote broke, and this site claims to ship orders within one business day. After I ordered a remote from their site, I had a transaction on my credit card show up for a dvd from a book store in Canada, which I didn't place seeing as I don't live in Canada and have no need to shop online there. Is this site a scam? Maybe I'm asking too soon, since my order hasn't been mailed to me yet, but I'm just worried I'm never even going to get it. I've already been charged. There's no way to track my order either. I did call a number I found on the website and got a guy on the phone who said my order went out 3 days ago. I don't even know what state this site/business is located in. There's no address. Just a phone number and website. more

Voting Question: I don't know how to deal with my manipulating mother?

My mother has always been a manipulating person. But she tries to come across as the victim when her manipulating has come to light. I am from Boston and now live in Canada. My stepson who is in college has started a vitamin and supplement business at the gym he belongs to, to help with his school. There was a company in the USA that was going out of business and he could buy products at a great savings, but it would only be shipped to the USA. He called my mother who sold her house and built a 300 thousand dollar apartment onto my brothers house, and he asked if he could have the shipment sent to her house. She said no problem. My husband and I went down to visit and to pick up the package. For some reason my mother told my brother there was some viles in the box (which there wasn't). My brother then took my husband aside and said he wanted the label with the address and my mothers name taken off the box. So my husband did. I didn't think it was a big deal. Then there was the second half of the shipment coming the following week. As we were leaving my brother took my husband aside and told him he was going to refuse the next shipment. My husband asked if we could have someone pick it up. My brother said as long as it was picked up on the day it was delivered. My husband then got in the car and I said what was that conversation about...my husband told me and I half joking said what do they think your son is a drug dealer. My husband replied apparently so. I then called my mother later on, and confronted her, and she started her whole crying thing. I told her that the behavior was inexcusable and that my husband and stepson are owed an apology for there accusations. I told her that doesn't say much for me either that I would allow my mother to be a middle man in an illegal transaction. In the mean time my step son wrote my brother a letter telling him that he didn't understand this whole thing and he apologized and said that he asked my mother, and if he had know it was going to cause all of this he wouldn't of done so and for that he was apologizing. Then my brother writes back and thanked my stepson for reaching out because he has only heard things second hand from my mother. He also claimed that the only problem he had was the address being on the box.He then asked his to answer a few questions, did he charge this in my mothers name, who said my brother said anything and why did my mothers name be on the package. He also made it clear that it was his house not my mothers. My mother has her own entrance. My stepson forward the email to me. I responded to my brother by telling him that no one reached out to him because the agreement was made with my mother, and I also told him that my stepson did not have access to mom's credit card, it was my husband he said that you were implying something illegal was going on (hence the shipment being refused and it having to be out of there the day it got delivered or it was going to be thrown out)and it was sent under her name because the Name of the business is not on my mothers apartment and it would not of been delivered. I ended the letter telling him that the letter with his 3 to 4 questions only validated, that my mothers address on the package was not the only issue as he was claiming. I also told him that we should not be the ones reaching out we did not accuse the innocent. I am now in a situation that I don't blame my husband and stepson for not wanting to go visit or step-foot in the house again. I know my husband will because of me. But I feel until my brother admits he just ran with these accusations that my mother told, instead of realizing how she is and that she is constantly trying to start trouble in the family. I have talked to my brother once since then, I called him to tell him that my mother( who found a car service to bring her places if she needs to go, which she was very excited about finding) ran into a friend of mine on a day she used this service and told my friend that my brother will never drive her anywhere. I told my friend this is untrue (knowing my brother would drive her places). I then called my brother and told him, I then said, that is how the other situations should of been handled. You should of known I would never use mom as a middle man for illegal purposes but you just continued the trouble that mom started. That conversation still got me no where. How do I make this better, or do I continue with a fake superficial relationship. more

Resolved Question: How old do I have to be to start a business in Canada?

1) I live in Richmond, BC 2) I am 13 years old 3) My Parents have agreed to pay for the costs of starting a business. They are lawyers, and can help me out. It is our tradition that parents do not over kill the amount of money they give their kids. I no longer have an allowance(after my Bar Mitzvah) and have no money. I have a SSN (Social Security Number) I've been scanning for some sort of government site telling me about it but so far it's not go. Most sites say there is no age. I just want to be careful not to waste $500. I am not keen on working 12 hours on Saturday's and this is why I made this decision. It's not that I have a spending addiction, but I'd like to know that in University I can be a little care free because of the hard work I've done now. I'm laying out a business plan to submit to my parents(they've said I need one before they provide the money and expertise for the incorporation crap) You may say, well, they're lawyers, how come they don't know the age for business license. Well, they are specialists in certain kinds of law and have been practicing for 25+ years so they can't tell me. I have a debit card with my own bank account but what is the point of having a bank account if you don't have any MONEY! My business will be based around selling second hand items and fixing them up. Sorry for the long post. more

Voting Question: Owning a business in Canada, living in the USA?

I started a corporation in Canada. I am a canadian citizen. I do hold a US full green card though. My partner lives in Canada, he owns the other half of the business. We want a 50 / 50 split, but i've been told that in order for it to remain "Canadian Controlled" my business partner needs to own 51% of the share and I, 49%. The fact is though, I am a full Canadian citizen, and I have just obtained a US Green Card which enables me to live and work here permanently and also do business. I have read that Canadian businesses need to start paying the IRS if they have an "agent" of the business performing work within the US. This is another thing that is hard to get answers for from anybody. The fact is, that the work is 100% performed in Canada, and I am not an agent of any sort, I am solely a 50% shareholder and owner of this business. Can anybody out there clear any of this up for me? Even my accountant is providing misleading information... more

Voting Question: Prepaid card and how can i apply?

I am 14, live in canada (ontario) and i am starting up a new online business venture next week. I never thought about it before but i need a way that i can make payments very fast from myself to my customers, also to verify my paypal account. i.e. i need a mastercard or visa prepaid card that's reloadable, not a credit card. I was looking at the bmo mozaik mastercard but it is a requirement that the card holder be 16 to apply. Are there any cheap options for a prepaid reloadable business card that i can use and apply for in ontario? Thanks a bunch more

Voting Question: POLL: CHOOSING A NAME FOR MY PET SERVICES COMPANY...THANKS!?

I am about to get started with a pet services company. Dog walking will be the main business for now, but will also offer pet sitting, and pet visits...later I will add pet photography, day care and grooming. The name I'm leaning towards (and that is doing well amongst friends) is A Rebel With Paws....but I also have Muttley Crew, For Pet's Sake, and The Haute Dog in the running.... I am sick of all the mushy girly names out there, and while I'd like it to still be a little cute, I want it to be fun, and convey a little attitude! I myself and a little quirky, and want to stand out from all the other business names when people google! My main demographic will be young, trendy professionals in their 30's and 40's who are relatively wealthy, are style/image conscious, and want the highest level of service. The younger side of the demo will be mostly young urban professional couples without kids that live along a waterfront and very much like to enjoy a high quality of life. The older clients will come from a different neighborhood. Well off families with kids and a very busy lifestyle. Again, they are very aware of trends and like to be up to date on them. Of course, all of these people want the best care for their pets, and care enough to make sure they find the right person. I just want to stand out and prove to them that I'm it! Do you like the name? I was thinking the website could use warm colours that make you feel good - like mandarin orange and cherry blossom pink....and along the side the name could be written in a Miami Ink/Christian Audigier cool tattoo style and sparkle a little - I'd throw a paw in for the 'a' in paw to contrast the bad-*** with some cutesy. The links to the pages could be found in different parts of the tattoo or something. I don't know! Feedback would be great... Oh, and I just want to say I like the word 'rebel' because these are all urban dogs....and I'll be picking them up and taking them on walks on these beautiful ravine/forested trails, and sometimes to the beach. Basically I'm taking them out of the city (not really, but out of the city environment). They are 'rebelling' the urban lifestyle... I mean, basically the name is just supposed to be catchy, but there is SOME meaning behind it...I guess I thought it would be fun. And that even if you didn't get it at first, I'd like the name to at least drive traffic to the website when a potential client is surfing web looking for a dog walker. From there a great website would give you a taste of my personality and show the quality of service that I have to offer. So basically I'm just hoping the name will be catchy and fun enough for people to take notice... Additional Details When somebody googles pet sitting or dog walking and my business comes up listed under business on the google maps, I am making the assumption that they know what I do...and again am looking to drive traffic. When I meet people face to face they will also hear what I do directly from me...I suppose that's why I wanted to do something a little different. There will also be a tag line on business cards, and over-sized post cards that I'd print would also explain the services...does that info help show you where I'm coming from? The city is Toronto, Canada.... And I guess Rebel Paws could be an option for something short.... rebelpaws.com more
