Sent on his way again after a back-door listing

THE property development industry is buzzing with the news that accident-prone aged-care entrepreneur Ted Sent is back in the market.

The former bankrupt is best known as the founder of Primelife Corporation.

Sacked shortly after prominent business buddies Ronald Walker and Robert Champion de Crespigny bought shares in the listed retirement village giant back in 2003, Sent went on to sue for unfair dismissal.

Although he was unsuccessful, the high-profile court case turned out to be quite a spectacle.

Underworld boss Mick Gatto even made an appearance as a star witness and the court heard how Sent secretly paid the former boxer -- who, surprise, surprise, turned out to be quite a dab hand as a mediator -- more than $200,000 to help smooth over issues at building sites. more

The Book for Entrepreneurs, The Road to Mega Success With Louis G

An entrepreneur's biggest nightmare is a depleted bottom line.

Professional advisor, radio personality, business coach, CPA, lawyer, entrepreneur and new author Louis G. Hutt, Jr. has heard these questions and more. He has worked with many who have either come close to or been forced to take down their shingle sooner than planned because they didn't get a handle on the financial-side of the business.

In his debut book, The Road to Mega Success: Simple Strategies for Enriching the Bottom-line, an extension to his radio program and popular workshops, Hutt gives a comprehensive step-by-step approach on how a fledging business can become a financially sound and prosperous business.

Signs you need more staff

I was speaking to a small business entrepreneur the other day who said that, even though clients were literally walking through the door, he just did not have any more hours in the day in order to be able to sign them up. Although he could have done so, he knew he would not be able to service them properly because he was spreading himself too thinly already. So he had to turn away valuable prospects, who were then going to his competitors.

3. You're becoming a jack of all trades In small business, it's common to become a jack of all trades. You need to know MYOB or whatever your accounting software is. You've mastered how to make changes on your website. You figured out how to apply for government grants. The world of small business is diverse and the range of skills required to succeed is huge. more

Summer Celebration helps kids turn ideas to action

The Youth Entrepreneur and CEO Camp shows them how to go from just thinking of ideas to making them happen.

"We got to do something to get them interested like they do with movies...something to catch their attention," said 19-year-old Jordan Grealish, a seminar participant, when discussing his group's business idea.

Jordan, Ralph and Alex, three seminar participants, met for the first time yesterday. Now they are planning a video game business together.

As part of the Youth Entrepreneur Seminar, they are creating a business plan. If they win an Indiana Black Expo Summer Celebration competition, they will earn the seed money to put the plan in motion.

For Grealish, this could be his ticket to college.

Business Cards And Letterheads Questions asked

Resolved Question: What is a commission?

This commission is related => travel agencies => travel agents Mostly travel agents get commissions. What do commissions mean? Additionally: what is a profit margin? what operations are needed to manage a travel agency? How much will that operation cost? (For example: Marketing will cost approximately $21,000 with junk mail and magazine ads) How much money does a travel agent get in a week? How much money does assistant, sales, branch managers get in a week? Description of a travel agency's duty. Do travel agents charge people? Do travel agencies do other stuff instead of services or booking vacations or selling travel-related products? You don't have to answer all just some of them or a lot of them! Please, because I am just 12 years old and new to everything here. There is a project that needs this info so I can use the info to assemble hard-copies such as overview sheet, company poster, letterhead, business card, itinerary, brochure, and atlas. Due: March 17 Thank you everybody! I will post my grade later for you curious ones. :) ♥ more

Voting Question: Business Branding Maybe?

I think I have an idea of what you would call someone who does this but I thought I would double check and see if other knew what you would call someone with this job/business. What would you call a business or person who is kind of like a wedding or party planner but for a small business? They basically help with just the looks and the image of the business? They would take someone starting a small business and help them establish their "brand" by connecting them with sub contractors who can accomplish the things they need for their business? Such as, they would help you figure out what kinds of things you would need for your business like business cards, websites, letterheads, logo, etc? They would maybe start out as helping you figure out the best approach on what your business should look like? Picking out colors, finding someone to make a logo, and then deciding ways to advertise your business online? I realize this is kind of a scattered post but I can't think of what you would call this person or business. Someone who takes care of building the look of the company and sub contracting to programmers, designers, and print companies? Also, what degrees would they have? Would this mainly fall under branding and marketing or would it be a business coach? Thank you :D more

Resolved Question: Help on my landscaping and construction business plan i need answers under each topic please help asap.?

Promotion How will you get the word out to customers? Advertising: What media, why, and how often? Why this mix and not some other? Have you identified low-cost methods to get the most out of your promotional budget? Will you use methods other than paid advertising, such as trade shows, catalogs, dealer incentives, word of mouth (how will you stimulate it?), and network of friends or professionals? Should you have a system to identify repeat customers and then systematically contact them? How much will you spend on the items listed above? Where will this money come from? Image What image do you want to project? How do you want customers to see you? What plans do you have for graphic image support? This includes things like logo design, cards and letterhead, brochures, signage, and interior design (if customers come to your place of business). Pricing Explain your method or methods of setting prices. Compare your prices with those of the competition. Are they higher, lower, the same? Why? For most small businesses, having the lowest price might take away from profit margin; large competitors can under price you anyway. Will you have average prices and compete on quality and service? Does your pricing strategy fit with what was revealed in your competitive analysis? How important is price as a competitive factor? Do your intended customers really make their purchase decisions mostly on price? Proposed Location Is your location important to your customers? If yes, how? If customers come to your place of business: Is it convenient? Parking? Interior spaces? Not out of the way? Is it consistent with your image? Is it what customers want and expect? Where is the competition located? Is it better for you to be near them (like car dealers or fast food restaurants) or distant (like convenience food stores)? What qualities do you need in a location? Describe the type of location you’ll have. Physical requirements: • Amount of space • Type of building • Zoning • Power and other utilities Access: Is it important that your location be convenient to transportation or to suppliers? Do you need easy walk-in access? What are your requirements for parking and proximity to freeway, airports, railroads, and shipping centers? Include a drawing or layout of your proposed facility if it is important, as it might be for a manufacturer. Construction? Most new companies should not sink capital into construction, but if you are planning to build, costs and specifications will be a big part of your plan. Cost: Estimate your occupation expenses, including rent, but also including maintenance, utilities, insurance, and initial remodeling costs to make the space suit your needs. What will be your business hours? Distribution Channels How do you sell your products or services? • Retail • Direct (mail order, Web, catalog) • Wholesale • Your own sales force • Agents • Independent representatives • Bid on contracts ......I need answers for these in your opinion for a business plan for a landscaping and construction company please help more

Voting Question: Is paypal pulling a scam on me?

I recently bought a fake memory card from ebay. I filed a claim and was asked to mail the product back to the seller. I did. It cost me a little over 10 dollars which is 1/3 of the price of the card. After I sent the tracking information I got this email stating,"Thank you for providing the online tracking information for the returning item. This tracking information has been shared with the seller. Once delivery of the item can be confirmed, a refund will be issued." Now a week later I get a email stating, "To continue with the investigation of your complaint, we must request documentation to support your claim that the item is not authentic. Please obtain a document from an unbiased, third-party, such as a dealer, appraiser, or an organization that is qualified in the area of the item in question (other than yourself), which clearly identifies the item as not authentic. The document must specifically state how the item received differs from an authentic item and must include a detailed explanation of how the person evaluating the item determined that it is not authentic. If possible, the document should include a serial number, and must be on letterhead that includes the name, address, and phone number of the business or organization so that PayPal may contact them if necessary." In a another paragraph it states that they will cancel my claim if not filed by a certain date. I followed the ebay guide and according to the guide in multiple tests that I did myself it was fake. I did not know I needed an appraiser and a legal document to show this item is fake to get a refund. Oddly paypal asks me to send these documents 1 week after I mailed the 10 cent piece of plastic. I don't have these documents. I need to know my options to get my money back, just the 30 dollars. If anyone in the internet can help me, please do. more

Resolved Question: Looking for some design tips on this logo?

I'm far from a graphic designer and know that this logo is very basic however I am trying to give my husbands business a new 'look' and am starting with a logo. He would like to use it on business cards, letterhead, and as part of a sign on his car. We are trying to highlight that he specialises in painting period homes by incorporating the lacework. The clip art isn't the greatest I know but its the best that I could find. And we would like an old style font to match if anyone knows where I could download one for free. What do you think? Any ideas how I can improve it? http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j44/rxqueen14/logonewsmall.jpg more

Resolved Question: Questions about going to a graphic desiner....?

ok. I have a small cleaning business and I'm looking to create a logo for myself. This logo would be used on color business cards, letterhead/invoices fliers/promotional coupons and maybe for a simple website. Now.... I've found a logo I really like on an online business card website. It's a generic cartoon like picture of a cleaning lady.... and she kinda looks like me! :) My question is: could I take that logo I like to a graphic designer, and have them slightly alter it so I could call it my own? How different does it need to be? Can I use the same colors? This online business card company does not offer all the things I will need... and in the altered arrangement I'm looking for, so I'm assuming the next best thing would be a graphic designer right? Once they designed something for me, is it my logo?? Do all graphic designers do what I'm looking for? How much should I be looking to pay for such services since the major designer will be already done for them- in the online logo I will show them as the example? Any other advice is welcomed here... I'm new to all this! :) more

Resolved Question: Inconsistent Yahoo Mail Search Results?

I have used Yahoo Classic for at least two years now and have used the search feature with no problem until this past Friday (2/27/09). I recently joined a listserve group and get about 200 e-mails daily. I have a filter set to dump them into a special folder. I usually then go into that folder and do a search, using a word or phrase from the subject line, to pull out all e-mails for one particular topic. I then read the first e-mail and if it's a topic of no interest to me, I delete all the other e-mails. As of this past Friday, I found the search feature wasn't working well. Sometimes it doesn't pull all the e-mails that have that subject line. Other times, if I've used that search word or phrase previously, it will pull maybe a few unread e-mails (but not all) and then some that I have saved. It's very frustrating. From this Yahoo! Answers site, it appears this has been an ongoing and intermittent problem with Yahoo! mail with Yahoo! not being too concerned about fixing the problem. In prior posts on this site (and also on the listserve I joined), it sounds like g-mail is a better option. I may consider that for the future but right now I use my Yahoo! e-mail for business and have it printed on my business cards and letterhead. I guess when I get down to having to reorder that I will consider switching to g-mail. more

Resolved Question: Legal question that requires an answer?

OK….I have set up a new bogus law firm, Johnson, Johnson and Swarzenbach. I have printed some really official looking letterhead and business cards. I made cards for myself that say “Senior Partner” on them. I have rented some office space and placed a Yellow Page Ad. Now to my question. Is it illegal to put lawyer like credentials after my name (which I’ve done) despite no formal legal training. People are already calling with potential lawsuits and the money (retainers) is rolling in. Should I hire any lawyers, or would paralegals (far cheaper) and actors that look like lawyers be a better way to go?? I’m worried I might get sued at some point (irony) and have to actually use one of my employees. Your thoughts??? more

Resolved Question: I'm creating a mock up business card and letterhead. I want to emboss the company name, how do I do it? ?

I want to manually emboss the company name on the business card and letterhead. This is for a mock up to see how it looks. What tools do you suggest I use? Right now I have Fiskars (brand) embossing tool, but I'm not sure if I'm using it right. I've done research on manual embossing and now inks are coming into play. I'm digitally creating the file, and printing the business card and letterhead on a high quality printer. How do you suggest I do this? I'm student so if heat embossing is going to pricy I'd rather do the dry emboss technique. Therefore, I would like to know of a top notch embossing stylus because the one I have "ain't worth a crap". more

Resolved Question: I have a project for my ASL class, need a catchy title for a sign language interpreting company?

I need to come up with a "business" - make cards, letterhead, etc. I need a catchy title - someone with the name Abby Zweigert did one that was "A-Z Interpreting" but I can't do that since my initials are JU. I had a good one in my head one day and forgot to write it down. But basically, I need a good title for the business. Any ideas? more

Resolved Question: Can anyone give me opinions on my corporate branding?

Hello, I'm in the process of establishing a software-based research firm whose target market mainly consists of corporate clients. I'm having a design company create my corporate branding and identity. The initial concepts are of the letterhead and business card. There are elements I like of with all. *Set 1: I like the 1st in that it adds an accent color to my image. Between my logo and current colors of my site, it's heavily blue and heavily gray. So, I think the goldish color adds a unique touch that can make me more easily identifiable. BUT, I'm unsure if it's too bold? Will it take away from my professional image w/ corporate clients? *Set 2: This set seems more traditional and corporate-friendly. It incorporates my grays well and such, and seems to be a safer bet. *Set 3: This is a very clean, minimalist look that also seems to be a safe bet. I'm no marketing or art expert, so can anyone shed some opinions? Also, feel free to give ideas on how to improve upon these. Thanks! http://img205.imageshack.us/my.php?image=bizandletterhead1ix4.jpg http://img145.imageshack.us/my.php?image=bizandletterhead2hx1.jpg http://img527.imageshack.us/my.php?image=bizandletterhead3my4.jpg more

Resolved Question: If you are designing some print media (for ex. a logo) can you use colors from different pantone palettes?

I'm a graphic designer (usually for websites) and I just started designing logos, letterhead, etc. I need to use colors from the Pantone Color Book swatches in Adobe illustrator. There are many different paletted to choose from (metalic, pastel, coated, uncoated, cmyk UP, cmyk PC etc) I want to know if I can choose colors from different palettes for one logo or business card. If not, what is the best palettet to use for printing on paper? And Also what will happen if something I design for paper is to be printed on other surfaces. Thanks in advance for your help! more

Resolved Question: How can I design a logo for large print?

I mentioned to my boss at work that I'm not so bad at Photoshop and he asked me if I could tweak a logo he already has and make a letterhead design and business cards. That's fine; totally within my capabilities. He also, however, wants a large design to be printed as stickers and put onto his van. The problem there, is that it's been a while since I've thought about large print design, and I'm not fully confident that I can make something that won't pixlate when blown up to that size. I was thinking, if I use vector graphics only, that should solve it, but does anyone else have any ideas/tips of how this can be done? Do I need to just make a really large template? more

Resolved Question: Walgreens won't print my photos without photographer's release, but I am the photographer and not a pro.

Photography is a hobby, but a very serious one–right down to specialized lenses, lighting and backdrops. I take hundreds of pictures at any given event (thousands at some sporting competitions). Recently both of my printers were acting up, and I needed some basic prints quickly. I sent them through Walgreens to pick up in an hour and got the surprise of the decade. They did not print my photos, because I need the photographer’s permission to have these printed. No problem, I’m thinking, I am the photographer. I was mistaken. Even though I had my original CF cards with the photos still on them, I was told that it means nothing. I have to have it in writing. I said “Fine, give me a piece of paper and I will put it in writing.” No luck there either. I had to show them a letterhead or a business card which would prove that I am a professional photographer. I am not, so I don't have any of those. What can I do so that I don't have to jump through hoops to print my pictures? more

Resolved Question: I want to open a small neighborhood Print Shop business...?

I have a passion for photo & print projects. The programs that I use are basic home versions. I have learned to become pretty good at using these programs and intend to purchase better software geared toward more professional use. So far I have been recruited to do fliers, brochures, various invitations, newsletters, letterhead, business cards, personalized greeting cards, obituaries and even some simple photo/video editing. All for free. I cannot afford to keep doing this for free and have been encouraged to open a shop. I am now taking a business class to get myself familar with business planning. Does anyone know what type of equipment I'll need to at least set up a shop in my small area? What kinds of printers, computers and software would be good for a start-up business? I can expand as I see profit. I am disabled and so this kind of business will be good for me physically because I can take orders and process them from my business location or at home when the kids go to sleep. more
