Some risk taking 'good for young'

A leading entrepreneur has warned a 'cotton wool culture' is discouraging children from being innovative and taking measured risks.

Simon Woodroffe, founder of the YO! sushi chain and a star of the Dragons' Den BBC TV show, said youngsters needed to be instilled with a 'go for it' attitude and the desire to push boundaries.

'Helping children to experience risks in a managed way is not only key to their general development but also to bringing on the next generation of entrepreneurs,' he added.

Police Jury places weight limit on Henry Bass Road

"We voted to advertise and before (the job) was advertised, it was a done deal. If we're going to approve something as a jury, we need to do it. I don't have anything against (the new hire)." "(Hiring someone) became an emergency in one week?" said Kenny Haymon. Jerry Blair agreed that the hiring process left something to be desired and that "there should be accountability if people don't follow procedure." In another matter, the jury also agreed to purchase fuel tanks and a fuel truck, pending a report from McKee on the "pay back" of such a move, so that the parish could buy fuel in bulk and thereby save 10 to 15 cents per gallon. Blair requested that McKee provide the jury with a report that would show the net savings for the jury over a span of about two to three years. In 2007, the parish could have saved from about $18,000 to about $27,000 by buying fuel in bulk. more

KeyPoint Raises GBP 4m to Market Faster Texting Software

Peter Waller, chairman of the company, yesterday refused to name the handset manufacturer that will use the software because of strict non-disclosure agreements.

However, he disclosed that the money raised will be used to bankroll product marketing and further product development.

He said: "It will allow us to take the product forward and allow us to beef up the marketing and sales part of business and fulfil our initial contract.

"There is quite a long time between signing a contract with these organisations and getting these products into the market."

Waller added: "It is a fairly cash intensive business. So we have to design, develop, modify and get it to the client. We don't get paid a substantial amount of money until those clients release it in the market."

Rajiv Bala, a business graduate student and vice president of UT's Entrepreneur Society, said the resources within the business school and its network of professors make it a great place for small businesses to grow.

"UT, out of a lot of business schools in the country, is very entrepreneur-friendly," Bala said.

Corporate communication senior Morgan Rollo uses the site as her homepage.

"I used to have a Google home page, but I feel like this is more convenient," Rollo said. "Mark goes to UT, so he knows what's relevant for students."

Texas Tech University's Web site manager Tanner Thetford said the Web sites have been growing exponentially. Thetford said the Texas Tech site has averaged about 175 visits a day this month, which is its first month of operation. more
