SA businesses warned not to focus only on profits

Pick 'n Pay owner Raymond Ackerman says businesses should not put a lot of emphasis on making profits at the expense of consumers. Addressing nearly 500 high-profile business and government officials at a gala dinner in Sandton, north of Johannesburg last night, Ackerman urged businesses to show more care for communities they operate in.

He received the Woodrow Wilson Award for Corporate Citizenship while Finance Minister Trevor Manuel was honoured with an award for his outstanding contribution in the public service.

It's the first time the awards have been granted to Africans. Ackerman says current high food prices are not being caused by high oil prices only, but also by insufficient food production. The Awards were established in honour of Woodrow Wilson, the only American president to have held a doctorate. more

Pearl Companies First in US to Implement Latest Wynsure Software

It will be replacing existing legacy systems at the Pearl Companies.

This collaboration between Pearl Companies and Wynsure Insurance Solutions is the first U.S. implementation of the product and will be key to the expansion of Pearl's Affinity and Worksite Marketing businesses, Wynsure's practice, and the CGI/Wyde alliance. Consultants from both CGI and Wyde have been aggressively working onsite with Pearl's teams at their headquarters in Peoria, Ill., and in Albany, N.Y., to help promote a seamless transition to this new software.

Darling caves in on fuel duty

THE Labour MP for Linlithgow and East Falkirk has been sending out letters to local businesses in his constituency, entitled "Small Business Bonus available - Have you applied?"

Encouraging local businesses to apply for the Small Business Bonus Scheme � which was introduced and funded by the SNP in the Scottish Government budget to cut and abolish business rates for 150,000 small businesses in Scotland � the letter remarks: "I am sure this will be beneficial to many small businesses at a time when overall costs are increasing."

This is unbelievable hypocrisy from Labour for their MPs to be promoting an SNP Government scheme to cut business rates for small businesses which Labour OPPOSED. Labour in the Scottish Parliament refused to vote for the Small Business Bonus in the Budget and foolishly criticised it � while their own MPs rightly announce that it: 'will be beneficial to many small businesses at a time when overall costs are increasing'. more

Banks targeted after price-fixing allegation

B&B stressed that its savings and lending businesses "remained sound," adding that it was funded into 2009 despite the wholesale money market crisis.Within 15 minutes of the Bradford & Bingley's announcement, RBS, soon followed by Halifax Bank of Scotland (HBOS) – both of whom have launched their own rights issues – posted statements of reassurance, stressing that buy-to-let mortgages represented a mere 1 per cent of its UK loan portfolio. It was not enough to prevent a loss of confidence, however.When trading resumed, shares in B&B fell at one point by as much as 30 per cent , before closing late yesterday afternoon at 24 per cent down. Shares in HBOS fell 10 per cent, while Alliance & Leicester incurred a 5.2 per cent drop. Lloyds TSB and Barclays dropped 1 per cent and 2.5 per cent respectively. more

I received a letter from Advanta stating that they will charge off my commercial account and report it to the credit bureaus. Now I am being called by debt collector stating that I will be sued. i had a balance on an advanta card.. they sent me a letter in the mail that the card would be closing (due to them going out of business) i can no longer use the card but i am to still pay off my balance.. my question is.. i had this card for about 3 years and have been steadily paying off the balance.. today i pulled my credit report with 2 different agencies experian and equifax and neither show this acct?! neither as revolving or closed.. why not?? and this would make it seem if i was to deafult that wouldnt show either.. balance is about 4 thousand.. more

My bf has been in business for 8 years and was using the same credit card since the beginning, (if it matters the company was advanta). Well 2 weeks ago he got an email that they are closing all accounts in 5 days because the company was bankrupt. So he went to wells fargo who he has been with for 10 years to get a credit card. He got a letter today that he was denied, he went to chase and couldn't open a business account only personal so he left, then went to bank of america and they opened a business account but denied him as well for a credit card. He always has $40,000 in the account and has a score of 740 with one credit agency and 775 with the other. he does not have any loans and no other cards and needs 1 to run the business. Bank of america told him it was because lack of revolving credit accounts. So we think it might be that Advanta the credit card company didn't report with the agency. So what can he do? any suggestions is appreciated. Resolved Question: Are credit card companies hurting future profits by raising finance charges of credit worthy customers?

Before Capital One and Chase stuck it to some people I know, Advanta has done the same with small Business accounts, which are about 75% of their business. I'm thinking when the stinky stuff starts to hit the fan, the credit card companies are going to regret what they are doing because they will end up with only the desperate as customers. Voting Question: How Many Advanta Bank Credit Card Holders Been Shafted?

Advanta Bank has been jacking the interest rates for their small business owners now for month with no legitimate reason to do so. Have they done this to you? If so, would you be interested in participating in a class action lawsuit against them? Please e-mail me at dec458@msn.com if you are one of their victims. They jacked mine up to 30.05% for no good reason. In their latest credit card terms they have a clause in there that says they can jack your credit card rate for any reason they feel like for no reason whatsoever. Been with Advanta Business Card (aka Advanta Bank) of Salt Lake City, UT for several years. My credit score is hovering around 800. I pay all my bills on time. I ALWAYS pay at least 8 to 10 times the minimum due (usually its around $300, and I send them at least $2,500 to $3,000 each month.) Suddenly, without any reason they can support, my credit rate went from 7.99% to 25.08%!!! This is outrageous! They can't tell me why, just that it did. I've talked to Maxine#MW2, Jim #RT1, Martin #7364, Jessica #JFR, Cindy #CC1, and Lana #SBS; they all tell me my credit is excellent, but can't tell me why the rate went up. Are they going the way of WaMu? more

I have a business credit card from Advanta and my interest rate used to be at 16%. I received my latest bill and I just discovered that they rack up my interest rate to almost 36%!!!!! Everyone needs to be very wary of doing business with Advanta. This month my interest rate was increased from 11.99% to 25.39%. When I questioned why this was since I was an excellent customer and have excellent credit, I received the following reply. It seems now it doesn't matter how good you are at paying your bills, you are punished for what the rest of the country does. I am paying off this credit card immediately and cancelling my account. Resolved Question: My Business Credit Card's interest rate jumped to 35.5%. Is that LEGAL??

I had a great interest rate on my Advanta Business card that I had for my spouses company. But after we bought our first house, the mortgage loan left our debt to income ratio off, so that our credit scores dropped drastically. Advanta then decreased our spending limit and upped the interest rate to 35.49%!! Thankfully we opted out, but although I know credit card companies can lower limits and increase rates because of credit scores is 35.49% legal?? That seems excessive to me. more

Capital One hiked my rate up. Read a review about Advanta. Basically says, At the moment, the credit card with the longest 0% introductory apr is the Advanta Platinum with Rewards. It comes with a 0% APR for balance transfers for 16 months. Even after the introductory period is over, the apr is very low at 7.99%. This is actually a small business credit card. Now, you may be asking why are we recommending a business credit card. Well, the reason is that you do not need a business to apply for a small business credit card. You can apply as a "sole proprietor". At the moment, there is no personal card with a 0% balance transfer offer longer than 12 months. Is this going to be a good deal? I currently have four business accounts (Dell, Staples, Office Depot and Exxon).
